The Revised S201 catalog of far-ultraviolet objects inspects some images in detail. A great source of information.
From the basement lab comes this 3" wide specimen.
Salt, Aluminum Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Sodium Metasilicate, Sulfur and a small amount of Sodium Hydroxide was combined with water and allowed to evaporate for a few days. This produced a thick viscous yellow liquid that easily formed small crystals.
This liquid formed the "base" for Synthilite II. To this was added a small amount of sulfur and about 6mL of a hydrated zinc chloride solution. This was mixed in an aluminum foil form. On top was sprinkled some filings from a new US penny (zinc + copper).
After drying in the sun for a day, the sample was covered in foil and roasted over charcoal coals for about 4 hours. The resulting substance was a hard dry dark gray material with many air bubbles created by the aluminum sulfate expanding as it became aluminum hydroxide. The material melted easily from the heat of the MAPP gas torch resulting in a very hard gray ceramic-like "rock". Under UV the rock didn't really fluoresce other than in a few spots where a dark green color was being produced.
It was then topped with a small pile of barium carbonate + sulfur combined with a few crystals of cupric chloride. The pile was then heated with the MAPP gas torch which caused it to ignite as the sulfur burned. As the heating continued, the pile grew more incandescent.

Synthetic Fluorescent Mineral "Zinc Sulfide w/ Silver - Sphalerite 3.0" - Test tube over Alcohol Flame
Sulfur, silver filings / silver chloride and a zinc chloride solution were combined and heated in a test tube over an alcohol burner until all the liquid was gone. It was then heated for about 30 min. longer over the alcohol flame. During this time the test tube contained a yellowish incandescent liquid.
After cooling the solidified mass at the bottom of the test tube was a yellow sulfur color.
In addition to filings from a sterling silver spoon, another activator is assumed to be trace amounts of copper.

On an aluminum tray containing a bed of salt + drops of a sodium silicate solution, ZnS:Cu, CaS:Mn,Pb and SrS:Pb were spread in a thin layer. The ZnS (zinc sulfide) was placed around the perimenter, the SrS (strontium sulfide) and the CaS (calcium sulfide) were placed randomly in the center. Drops of a zinc chloride solution were placed around the edges. Lead filings from a fishing sinker were placed on the SrS and CaS zones and the sample was then well heated with a MAPP torch until all of the salt had melted.
The ZnS precipitate (prior to heating) consisted of zinc chloride, magnesium sulfate and malachite combined in a sodium carbonate solution, filtered and dried. The position of the zinc chloride solution drops seem to correspond to the brightest green fluorescence.

Synthetic Selenite (from garden marble rocks)
Hydrated calcium sulfate (selenite) was made by combining hot solutions of calcium chloride (from garden marble rocks dissolved in muriatic acid) and sodium sulfate. The resulting precipitate was then washed, dried and redissovlved in cold water. After a few weeks, the solution crystallized into clear acicular radiating crystals.
Interestingly, there appears to be a contaminent (possibly manganese) from the garden marble rocks. This is seen by a bright orange fluorescence under UVc. Could this be NaCl:Mn that remained after washing? Orange fluorescing halite normally requires a sensitizer to allow UV energy to be efficiently absorbed by the NaCl:Mn however, no lead or copper was added. Mysterious...
This experiment was suggested by Flickr's "fluospook" (Axel Emmermann).
