Barium sulfate was heated in a copper foil pan with a MAPP gas torch until it melted forming a thin crust. Then, the crust was broken and the BaSO4 was stirred with a marble rock. The center part was then heated until it was incandescent. I believe the roasting created barium oxide as well as a small amount of barium sulfide (from thermionic reduction of the sulfate ion).

Why are there two colors of fluorescence? The blue seems to be related to heat and to the interior of the heated (and melted) material.

FOV: 4.5" wide.

Approx. 1mL of strontium carbonate, 1mL of sulfur, about 1mL sodium nitrate, 1mL of sugar and about 0.01mL of manganese carbonate was ground together and placed on top of a piece of chalcedony. It was ignited with a match and immediately burst into bright yellow flame which burned for a couple of seconds. This resulted in a hard grey melted substance that was quite luminescent.

This mixture was named "Gorn Powder" in reference to a Star Trek episode wherein an alien (the Gorn) was defeated using a mixture of a nitrate, sulfur and carbon (aka "black powder").
