From the basement lab comes this 3.5" wide specimen.

On an aluminum tray containing a bed of melted salt + NaNO3 {~2 grains} + PbCl2 ssol {2 drops}, SrS mix was spread in a thin layer in the center and CaS mix was placed in a ring around it. The sample was then well heated with a MAPP torch until most of the salt had melted.

SrS mix: AA SrCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {1 spn} + AgNO3 {~3 xtls} + PbCl2 ssol {1 drop}

CaS mix: fresh CaCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {2 spn} + MnSO4 ssol {1 drops}

Contains:

SrS (FL+PHOS Green/Yellow/Greenish yellow >UVabc)

CaS (FL+PHOS Orange >UVabc)

Approx. 1mL of strontium carbonate, 1mL of sulfur, about 1mL sodium nitrate, 1mL of sugar, 0.01mL of lead chloride and about 0.01mL of copper carbonate was ground together and half the mixture was placed on top of a piece of calcite. It was ignited with a MAPP gas torch and immediately burst into bright yellow flame. The boiling mixture was heated to incandescence. This resulted in a hard dark grey melted substance that was quite luminescent.

Experiments in recreating the Bologna Stone, one of the first synthetically made phosphors made by heating barite from near Bologna, Italy. Heating barite (BaSO4) with carbon reduces it to barium sulfide (BaS).

These "cakes" were made by combining BaSO4 with flour and sugar (plus a tiny bit of NaCl and KCl as fluxes and CuCl2*2H2O as activator). Water was added and the mixture was baked at 500 degF until jet black and no longer producing smoke. The black mass was then and heated with a MAPP gas torch until it glowed bluish white.
