The Palace is still the oldest frontier saloon in Arizona and the most well-known and historic restaurant and saloon in the state. In the late 1870s, Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp and Doc Holliday were patrons of the Palace. Virgil and his wife Allie lived in Prescott where Virgil owned a saw mill at Thumb Butte and was Town Constable. Wyatt and his other brother, Morgan, visited Virgil in Prescott before they left for Tombstone. Doc was on a winning streak on Whiskey Row (possibly at The Palace) where he won $10,000 playing poker. He joined the Earps eight months later in Tombstone.

Bear Country USA:Welcome to Bear Country USA! Very few people have had a full-grown black bear look in the window of their family car, or if they have, it was not by choice. Even fewer have seen a reindeer or a elk up close. However, many people are getting experiences like these at Bear Country U.S.A. in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Nestled over 200 acres amidst towering pines and along rolling meadows just eight miles south of Rapid City, Bear Country U.S.A. offers visitors intimate views of most North American mammals. Visitors take a leisurely three-mile drive through several enclosures and encounter black bear, elk, reindeer, deer, cougars, bobcats, rocky mountain goats, bighorn sheep, dall sheep, pronghorn and buffalo.
At this “the home of the largest collection of privately owned black bear in the world”, Bear Country U.S.A. guests are guaranteed to see more than they bargained for. From the comfort of their own car, visitors watch as these clowns of nature frolic in a pool, climb trees and amble across the road in front of their vehicle.

Npplan.com: Robert, the Lincolns’ only son who lived into adulthood, donated the house to the state of Illinois in 1887 under the conditions that the state maintain the house and that no entrance fee would ever be charged for people to tour the house. The state turned it over to the National Park Service in 1972 for the creation of Lincoln Home National Historic Site.

Erielackhs.org/railroads/: The Erie-Lackawanna Railroad was formed by the merger of the Erie Railroad with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western on October 17, 1960. The new railroad took after its parent Erie; the largest amount of Lackawanna influence seemed to be paint. Both of EL's parents entered the merger after a couple of years of deficit operations, and EL continued their record, except for 1965 and 1966.
EL quickly consolidated its passenger services, with most trains following the ex-Lackawanna route east of Binghamton and the ex-Erie route west. Long-distance passenger trains were gradually cut back during the 1960s, and the last Hoboken-Chicago train was discontinued in 1970, leaving EL with a single daily commuter round trip between Cleveland and Youngstown and its extensive New Jersey commuter services. In 1967 the state of New Jersey began subsidizing the service and in 1970 began to acquire new cars and locomotives for the trains on the ex-Erie routes and the non-electrified Lackawanna lines (the Lackawanna electric cars would continue running until 1984).

The colours and atmosphere of these photos evoke powerful memories.
Yellowstone National Park has unique characteristics, unlike any other place on the planet.
It spans 3 states (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming) and is large enough to show dramatic changes in landscape, featuring mountainous areas, endless plains, massive waterfalls, streams, a vast lake, and (its most distinctive feature) thousands of geothermal springs, pools, geysers and fumaroles.
Our 3-day visit was obviously not enough to get to know Yellowstone. How long would it take? Years? But it was enough to visit some of the most striking places and capture their spirit.

As cores e atmosfera destas fotos evocam memórias intensas.

“… XVIII: At eight in the morning we reached the remnant and ruin of what had been the important military station of “Camp Floyd,” some forty-five or fifty miles from Salt Lake City. At four P.M. we had doubled our distance and were ninety or a hundred miles from Salt Lake. And now we entered upon one of that species of deserts whose concentrated hideousness shames the diffused and diluted horrors of Sahara—an “alkali” desert. For sixty-eight miles there was but one break in it. I do not remember that this was really a break; indeed it seems to me that it was nothing but a watering depot in the midst of the stretch of sixty-eight miles. …
This enthusiasm, this stern thirst for adventure, wilted under the sultry August sun and did not last above one hour. One poor little hour—Imagine a vast, waveless ocean stricken dead and turned to ashes; imagine this solemn waste tufted with ash-dusted sage-bushes; imagine the lifeless silence and solitude that belong to such a place …
The sun beats down with dead, blistering, relentless malignity; the perspiration is welling from every pore in man and beast, but scarcely a sign of it finds its way to the surface—it is absorbed before it gets there; there is not the faintest breath of air stirring; there is not a merciful shred of cloud in all the brilliant firmament; there is not a living creature visible in any direction whither one searches the blank level that stretches its monotonous miles on every hand; there is not a sound—not a sigh—not a whisper—not a buzz, or a whir of wings, or distant pipe of bird—not even a sob from the lost souls that doubtless people that dead air. And so the occasional sneezing of the resting mules, and the champing of the bits, grate harshly on the grim stillness, not dissipating the spell but accenting it and making one feel more lonesome and forsaken than before. …
Then another “spurt” of a hundred yards and another rest at the end of it. All day long we kept this up, without water for the mules and without ever changing the team. At least we kept it up ten hours, which, I take it, is a day, and a pretty honest one, in an alkali desert. It was from four in the morning till two in the afternoon. And it was so hot! and so close! and our water canteens went dry in the middle of the day and we got so thirsty! It was so stupid and tiresome and dull! …
The alkali dust cut through our lips, it persecuted our eyes, it ate through the delicate membranes and made our noses bleed and kept them bleeding—and truly and seriously the romance all faded far away and disappeared, and left the desert trip nothing but a harsh reality—a thirsty, sweltering, longing, hateful reality!
Two miles and a quarter an hour for ten hours—that was what we accomplished. It was hard to bring the comprehension away down to such a snail-pace as that, when we had been used to making eight and ten miles an hour. When we reached the station on the farther verge of the desert, we were glad, for the first time, that the dictionary was along, because we never could have found language to tell how glad we were, in any sort of dictionary but an unabridged one with pictures in it. But there could not have been found in a whole library of dictionaries language sufficient to tell how tired those mules were after their twenty-three mile pull. To try to give the reader an idea of how thirsty they were, …”
Chapter XX: On the nineteenth day we crossed the Great American Desert—forty memorable miles of bottomless sand, into which the coach wheels sunk from six inches to a foot. We worked our passage most of the way across. That is to say, we got out and walked. It was a dreary pull and a long and thirsty one, for we had no water. From one extremity of this desert to the other, the road was white with the bones of oxen and horses. It would hardly be an exaggeration to say that we could have walked the forty miles and set our feet on a bone at every step! The desert was one prodigious graveyard. And the log-chains, wagon tyres, and rotting wrecks of vehicles were almost as thick as the bones. I think we saw log-chains enough rusting there in the desert, to reach across any State in the Union. Do not these relics suggest something of an idea of the fearful suffering and privation the early emigrants to California endured?
Chapter XXI We were approaching the end of our long journey. It was the morning of the twentieth day. At noon we would reach Carson City, the capital of Nevada Territory. We were not glad, but sorry. It had been a fine pleasure trip; we had fed fat on wonders every day; we were now well accustomed to stage life, and very fond of it; so the idea of coming to a stand-still and settling down to a humdrum existence in a village was not agreeable, but on the contrary depressing.
Visibly our new home was a desert, walled in by barren, snow-clad mountains. There was not a tree in sight. There was no vegetation but the endless sage-brush and greasewood. All nature was gray with it. We were plowing through great deeps of powdery alkali dust that rose in thick clouds and floated across the plain like smoke from a burning house.

Driving US 6/US 50 and … What is that? It looks like a gigantic mirage! I drove a little more, and it still looks like a mirage. Standing on the ground, it still looks like a mirage. I tilted my head a few times, and the mirage doesn’t move. Therefore, it is not a mirage. It doesn’t look like a dry lake. Maybe it is a salt lake! They have those in Utah!
Sevier Lake
Sevier Lake in Utah is salty. The lake's high salt content makes it uninhabitable for most life, but it does support some forms of life, like brine shrimp. The Bear, Weber, and Jordan rivers carry salts into the lake, which are then mixed with salts from the surrounding soil and rocks.
Wildaboututah.org:
Here in Utah, early explorers and native peoples knew of saline deposits, springs and lakes long before the pioneers arrived in 1847.
All these salts leach from rocks and soil, then wash downstream to oceans and land-locked lakes, such as Sevier Lake and the Great Salt Lake.
When the pioneers moved to Utah, salt rendering became one of the first industries established for external trade. They boiled Great Salt Lake water over wood fires until only salt remained. However, this lake salt tasted bitter due to impurities in the water. Fortunately, it could be sold to mines in Montana where salt was used to refine silver.

Nps.gov: The balancing act of Twin Rocks is the result of a process called differential erosion. Simply put, different layers of rock are breaking down at different speeds. Differential erosion also produces the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park and the goblins of Goblin Valley State Park. The orange bottom half of Twin Rocks is the Moenkopi Formation. The white top half is the Shinarump Member of the Chinle Formation. A landscape of rivers and streams in a tropical climate created the Chinle Formation, about 220 million years old. Its Shinarump Member comprises gravel-filled rock formed by those ancient rivers. It is much tougher than the clay and silt of the Moenkopi below. The Shinarump protects the Moenkopi like a hard hat, while the Moenkopi erodes faster from the outside. This relationship has produced a large boulder balanced on a small, shrinking pedestal. Twin Rocks will someday collapse and join the other white boulders on the ground below them.

Route 66 Hotel and Conference Center
Drivingroute66.com: Upon arrival at the Route 66 Hotel the first thing that strikes you is the beautiful neon and wonderfully decorated lobby. There's no chance that you'll ever forget you're in a Route 66 motel as the walls are plastered with all manner of memorabilia and artwork! The hotel was actually the first Holiday Inn on Route 66 and opened in the 1950's.
This completely remodelled facility features 106 guest rooms and 8 suites, plenty of parking, a Grand Ballroom, and a "mini museum" with an array of vehicles, signs and articles from the golden age of Route 66. The huge Route 66 sign on the floor of the swimming pool is a nice touch!
The location of the Route 66 Hotel and Conference Center is ideal if you plan on seeing the local attractions such as the IL State capitol, Old State Capitol, Abraham Lincoln Museum, Lincoln’s home, and Lincoln's tomb.

Yellowstone.net:Old Faithful was named by the first official expedition to Yellowstone, the Washburn Expedition of 1870. They were impressed by its size and frequency. Old Faithful erupts every 35 to 120 minutes for 1 1/2 to 5 minutes. Its maximum height ranges from 90 to 184 feet.
It is not the biggest or the most regular geyser in Yellowstone but it is the biggest regular geyser. Furthermore, it has been erupting in nearly the same fashion throughout the recorded history of the park. Through the years, it has become one of the most studied geysers. One result of this close observation is that the Park Rangers are able to predict its eruptions fairly accurately. This makes Old Faithful geyser one of the easiest geysers in Yellowstone to see.
Old Faithful is deceiving. The benches around the geyser are over 300 feet from the geyser but with nothing to judge the distance by, I rarely realize just how big the geyser is until I get further away. Personally, I like the view from Geyser Hill. As with any geyser, watch the wind direction or you may only see steam.

Nps.gov: Have you ever come across strange stacks of rocks while hiking in national parks? Maybe you wondered what they are and if they mean anything. Wonder no more—these rock piles are called cairns and they are often used to mark hiking routes in parks. You should leave them as you find them, as they may serve an important purpose.
Every park has different rules about cairns, so it’s always a good idea to check your park’s website for information on hiking trails before you go.

Reworking a couple of my USA Road Trip 2012 images with different crops and styles. Please view Large....
Ecency.com: I am very excited to share this overview of my trip to Capitol Reef National Park. I drove the width of the park on Highway 24 and got some great shots and then met the rest of the family after dark. The next day we explored the park together and did some hiking. I did a short sunset drive along Highway 24, which cuts across the park on the first night. It was a great time and I would like to return and experience more of what Capitol Reef has to offer.
Fatmanlittletrail.com: Capitol Reef National Park was one of the most surprising parts of my trip. It is the park that I hear most people say, “Oh, that is the one I skipped”. I found it beautiful and fascinating. The park is like an oasis in the middle of the desert with lush green flora surrounded by the red and grey rock cliffs and rock formations we are accustomed to in the Utah landscape. Nps.gov: Follow the pedestrian walkway to view the impressive Gorge Creek Falls. Water cascades 242 feet down the mountain before entering Gorge Lake, passing through the Gorge Powerhouse to the Skagit River. Water flows year-round, with the largest amount in spring and early summer during snow melt.
Walk a short interpretive trail for expansive views of Gorge Lake and Gorge Dam. The first .3 miles of the paved path is accessible; the last .5 miles of unpaved trail winds through the forest in a loop back to the parking area.

The walls of the cave are decorated with marvelous stalactites and the floor with corresponding stalagmites. Huge fragments of limestone, some as big as the ordinary house room, have fallen from the roof in many places. In places the stalactites are found in terraces; a fringe of delicately carved forms, swelling at different levels, gives the appearance of cascades. Many of the stalagmite columns, encircled by horizontal rings with pendent stalactites, are superbly beautiful. All manner of curious drip formations add to the wild beauty of the cave. Eight or ten chambers have been explored, the largest of these being 105 by 135 feet and 100 feet high. From the main entrance a stairway leads irregularly down about 175 feet and then small tortuous passages, opening into the chambers, and ladders, carry the venturesome visitor into the depths.

Well, hmmm. This tree looks like a dog to me! After 10 days of hard driving, all kinds of sensory over-load, 3000 miles of staring at the short broken white lines, I might be losing my mind (again); it wouldn’t be the first time that I have been told I’m crazy.
It was some place in the 16-mile Wildlife Loop Road. The big bad storm was coming, I needed to get out, now. It was very windy, and I was still searching for things that were moving like animals and hail.
What caught my attention was the tree. It looked like a dog. The pine needles look great in the wind; just look fur does. I took 4 pictures. It still looks like a dog to me. This is what happens when a solo long road trip gets a little goofy. Of course, I wouldn’t share it with anybody.
Or … I know what a dogtree! There are different kinds of dogtrees. Perhaps, I HAVE MADE THE FIRST SIGHTING OF A DOGTREE WITH PINES! Thank you, but no thanks. I don’t want it to be named after me.
Or … This is a good time to make an Album called The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Capitolreefcountry.com: Capitol Reef National Park lies in Utah’s south-central desert, an oasis of colorful sandstone cliffs, impressive domes, and soaring monoliths. Once called “Wayne Wonderland,” the park got its name in part from the great white rock formations which resemble the U.S. Capitol building, and from the sheer cliffs that presented a barrier to early travelers. Early inhabitants referred to the area as the “land of the sleeping rainbow” because of its beautiful contrasts: multi-colored sandstone surrounded by verdant riverbanks and arid desert vegetation, all nestled beneath deep blue skies. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 and reclassified as a national park in 1971. The park is open year-round. See the Capitol Reef National Park official map and trails for more information.
Nationalgeographic.com: The unifying geographic feature of Capitol Reef is the Waterpocket Fold. For a hundred miles its parallel ridges rise from the desert like the swell of giant waves rolling toward shore. Exposed edges of the uplift have eroded into a slickrock wilderness of massive domes, cliffs, and a maze of twisting canyons.
Capitol Reef is named for a particularly colorful section of the fold where rounded Navajo sandstone forms capitol-like domes and sheer cliffs form a barrier to travel, often referred to as a "reef." Although a highway now crosses the "reef," travel is still challenging for those wishing to see the park's more remote regions.

Jodylmiller.com, Jody L Miller Horse Photography: One of Prescott Arizona’s primary and well know statue is The Rough Rider monument on the Square, at the front of the Courthouse. This monument honors a group of young Arizonans who gallantly served their country during the Spanish-American War in 1898. It is also a shrine to one man, Captain William O. “Buckey” O’Neill. The creation of Solon Borglum, it is one of two local bronzes by the brother of Gutzon Borglum who designed Mt. Rushmore. William “Bucky” O’Neill, one of the city’s most famous sons, Buckey O’Neill came to Arizona during the wild heydays of the silver boom towns. He worked as a newspaperman for John Clum’s Epitaph in the early 1880s during the time of the Earp-Cowboy feud around Tombstone. He was a member of the Prescott Volunteer Fire Department when famed Whiskey Row burned. Teddy Roosevelt persuaded Bucky to join the Rough Riders and he led a local contingent of over 200 men to Cuba in the Spanish-American War, where he died. The statue was commissioned by the city for a fee of ten thousand dollars and unveiled in 1907.
Sharlothallmuseum.org: The Rough Rider Monument is the creation of renowned artist Solon Borglum, whose brother Gutzon designed South Dakota's Mount Rushmore. Solon Borglum accepted the commission to create the sculpture even though the $10,000 fee, approximately $400,000 in today's dollars, was far below his normal asking price. Borglum loved the West, and the idea of creating a monument to fallen hero O'Neill caught his fancy. When the monument was dedicated, he attended the ceremony, along with Buckey's son Maurice and many Prescott residents. This magnificent bronze, which rests on a 28-ton granite boulder taken from a nearby hillside, is considered to be one of Borglum's finest works. Commissioned by the City of Prescott, it was paid for by area adults and school children.

Gary’s Gay Parita Gas Station
Route66travel.com: Nestled just off Route 66 in the ghost town of Paris Springs, Missouri, Gary’s Gay Parita Sinclair Station stands as one of the most beloved and photogenic landmarks along the historic highway. This meticulously recreated 1930s-era gas station serves as a nostalgic tribute to the golden age of American road travel and the spirit of Route 66.
Gary’s Gay Parita is more than a roadside attraction—it is a symbol of the preservation movement that keeps Route 66’s legacy alive. Located along an original alignment of the Mother Road west of Halltown, Missouri, this station sits on one of the most scenic and rural stretches of Route 66, known for its gently curving roads, lush greenery, and small-town charm.
The station captures the independent spirit that made Route 66 famous: a place where mom-and-pop businesses once lined the road, providing not just services, but stories and smiles. Gary’s dedication to reviving and maintaining the station turned it into one of the most visited and beloved spots in Missouri on Route 66.

Roadsideamerica.com: Standing along Route 66 west of Amarillo, Texas, Cadillac Ranch was invented and built by a group of art-hippies imported from San Francisco. They called themselves The Ant Farm, and their silent partner was Amarillo billionaire Stanley Marsh 3. He wanted a piece of public art that would baffle the locals, and the hippies came up with a tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin. Ten Caddies were driven into one of Stanley Marsh 3's fields at the summer solstice, then half-buried, nose-down, in the dirt, at a 60-degree angle (supposedly the same angle as the sloping sides of the Great Pyramid of Giza). They faced west in a line, from the 1949 Club Sedan to the 1963 Sedan de Ville, their tail fins held high for all to see on the empty Texas panhandle.
Tourists are always welcome at Cadillac Ranch. If you bring spray paint, make sure to snap some photos. Because whatever you create at Cadillac Ranch will probably only last a few hours before it's created over by someone else.
