The Lincoln Presidential Library is a research library[22] which houses books, papers and artifacts related to Lincoln's life and the American Civil War. In addition to the works associated with Lincoln and his era, the library houses the collection of the Illinois State Historical Library (founded by the state in 1889) and serves as a premier repository of books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and other materials of historical interest pertaining to the history of the state of Illinois. While the library is open to the public, its rare collection is non-circulating. A reading room, named the "Steve Neal Reading Room" in honor of Illinois historical journalist Steve Neal, is open to the public.

Santa Rosa is an old Spanish town on the Pecos River, it began as a large Spanish rancho. It got its name in 1890 from a chapel built by Don Cleso Baca to honor his mother. In the early days of Route 66, 1926 through 1937, the old alignment of Route 66 left Santa Rosa to continue on towards Santa Fe, the capitol of New Mexico then drop back down to Albuquerque and Los Lunas. In late 1937 Route 66 was straightened out to go directly to Albuquerque and by pass Santa Fe completely. The story behind that new, shorter alignment to Albuquerque is as interesting as any you'll find along the Mother Road. Ah those were the days.

Six men set out to climb a mountain on an August afternoon in 1869. They left their camp at the foot of the range, walked two miles up slope through bunchgrass and black sage, and threaded a course between granite outcrops and stands of pinyon and juniper. … There, on a slope as steep as a cathedral roof, they entered an open forest of spruce and limber pine. … With each step, stones clattered away downhill and thunked against logs. To this accompaniment, punctuated by the hoarse croaking of jays, … They were climbing the tallest mountain in the central Great Basin - the tallest in 180,000 square miles - and they wondered what they might name it … To reach his namesake peak, George Wheeler began near Shoshone Ponds in Spring Valley and climbed 7,000 feet over difficult and sometimes dangerous terrain.

Wanderlustamerica.com: Grand Canyon National Park is the 15th site in the United States to be named as a National Park. It is situated in northwestern Arizona and is often called one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Grand Canyon Park attracts up to 6.2 million visitors every year. Ancient Native Americans used to live in and around the park about 12,000 years ago. Today, people from all around the world come here to experience its helicopter rides, visitor centers, mule rides, and much more.

Unesco.org: Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon (nearly 1,500 m deep) is the most spectacular gorge in the world. Located in the state of Arizona, it cuts across the Grand Canyon National Park. Its horizontal strata retrace the geological history of the past 2 billion years. There are also prehistoric traces of human adaptation to a particularly harsh environment.

It was very smoky in Grand Canyon National Park. The Rangers were doing ‘control burns’, and there were 2 wildfires nearby. I drove the South Rim (Desert View Drive) going west. The smoke would change with the wind. Which meant I was going toward the sun, the wind, and the smoke. Sometimes it was very glary, sometimes very dark. Trying to take a decent photo was challenging.

nps.gov: At 9,115 ft (2,778 m) Rainbow Point and Yovimpa Point are the highest viewpoints in the park. Tectonic uplift has lifted this entire scene from sea-level over the course of the last 20 million years to later be dissected by tributaries of the Paria and Colorado Rivers. Tilting that occurred during uplift has situated the southern end of the park approximately 1,000 ft (304 m) higher than its northern end near the Visitor Center. Here erosion has been at work far longer than the Bryce Amphitheater, and undercut sheer cliffs compose much of the view along the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.

To the North

View the eroded edge of the Paunsagunt Plateau, carved by rain and melting snow into bowl-shaped amphitheaters, which drain to the Paria River and then the Colorado River. Atop the Markagunt plateau to the northwest and the Paunsaugunt plateau in the north, the Tushar Mountains and Sevier plateau (or Black Mountains) can be seen. These were created through volcanic activity associated with the uplift of the Colorado Plateau.

To the East

Below the iron-oxide colored limey mudstones of the Pink Cliffs of Bryce Canyon, the valley of the Paria river exposes marine shales of the Grey Cliffs and further south, sandstones of the White Cliffs. The Pink Cliffs as seen in the Table Cliff Plateau can be seen rising to 10,000 ft (3048 m) along the opposite side of the valley.

to the West

Across the Paunsagunt Plateau, peaks of the Black Mountains, and further off the Tushar mountains can be seen. Water which falls upon the forested top of this plateau drains not to the Colorado River, but west and north along the Sevier River towards Nevada. The edge of the plateau is therefore a watershed between the Colorado River and the Great Basin desert of Nevada.

To the South

Views to the south can be best appreciated across the parking lot at Yovimpa Point or along the Bristlecone Loop Trail.

I stopped the car to take pictures; and what a place it is. There was an elk and didn’t run off when I opened the car door. I wondered if I it was possible to walk with the elk. And we walked together for a few minutes. The elk was a tour guide of sorts; I watched her eyes. The next photos were while walking with the elk.

Some how or another, the elk knew I wasn’t aggressive. She kept her distance with me for a while. Then the elk silently barked at me, it was time for me to go to the other side of the road. I got close to the elk, until it was time for both of us to leave. I thanked the elk for bothering me and thanked for the tour.

Wildawareutah.org: Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) are one of six recognized subspecies of elk found in North America, and the only type of elk in Utah. Elk are members of the cervidae family, which also includes moose, caribou and deer. In 1971, the Rocky Mountain elk was designated Utah’s state mammal.

Both male and female Rocky Mountain elk have a light-brown body, dark brown head, neck and legs, and characteristic cream-colored rump. Bulls average 700 pounds and are about 5 feet tall at the shoulder; cows are slightly smaller at around 500 pounds and 4.5 feet.

The Mark Twain Birthplace State Historic Site is a publicly owned property near Florida, Missouri, that preserves the cabin where the author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in 1835. The cabin is protected within a modern museum building that also includes a public reading room, several of Twain's first editions, a handwritten manuscript of his 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and furnishings from Twain's Connecticut home. The historic site is adjacent to Mark Twain State Park on a peninsula at the western end of man-made Mark Twain Lake. The cabin was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

Samuel Clemens, later known by the pen name Mark Twain, was born in the two-room house on November 30, 1835. The house was rented by his parents Jane Lampton Clemens (1803–1890) and John Marshall Clemens (1798–1847). Clemens spent his first four years here until the family moved to a two-story clapboard house, now memorialized as the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal, Missouri, in 1839.

Nps.gov: Ring fractures formed as the magma chamber bulged up under the surface of the earth and subsequently cracked, releasing the enclosed magma. This created the source of heat for the West Thumb Geyser Basin today.

The hydrothermal features at West Thumb are found not only on the lake shore, but extend under the surface of the lake as well. Several underwater geysers were discovered in the early 1990s and can be seen as slick spots or slight bulges in the summer. During the winter, the underwater thermal features are visible as melt holes in the icy surface of the lake. The ice averages about three feet thick during the winter.

It’s a must-see for any Route 66 enthusiast, and it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and soak up some movie magic.

Capitol Reef is named for a particularly colorful section of the fold where rounded Navajo sandstone forms capitol-like domes and sheer cliffs form a barrier to travel, often referred to as a "reef." Although a highway now crosses the "reef," travel is still challenging for those wishing to see the park's more remote regions.

The walls of the cave are decorated with marvelous stalactites and the floor with corresponding stalagmites. Huge fragments of limestone, some as big as the ordinary house room, have fallen from the roof in many places. In places the stalactites are found in terraces; a fringe of delicately carved forms, swelling at different levels, gives the appearance of cascades. Many of the stalagmite columns, encircled by horizontal rings with pendent stalactites, are superbly beautiful. All manner of curious drip formations add to the wild beauty of the cave. Eight or ten chambers have been explored, the largest of these being 105 by 135 feet and 100 feet high. From the main entrance a stairway leads irregularly down about 175 feet and then small tortuous passages, opening into the chambers, and ladders, carry the venturesome visitor into the depths.

I stopped the car to take pictures; and what a place it is. There was an elk and didn’t run off when I opened the car door. I wondered if I it was possible to walk with the elk. And we walked together for a few minutes. The elk was a tour guide of sorts; I watched her eyes. The next photos were while walking with the elk.

Some how or another, the elk knew I wasn’t aggressive. She kept her distance with me for a while. Then the elk silently barked at me, it was time for me to go to the other side of the road. I got close to the elk, until it was time for both of us to leave. I thanked the elk for bothering me and thanked for the tour.

Wildawareutah.org: Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) are one of six recognized subspecies of elk found in North America, and the only type of elk in Utah. Elk are members of the cervidae family, which also includes moose, caribou and deer. In 1971, the Rocky Mountain elk was designated Utah’s state mammal.

Both male and female Rocky Mountain elk have a light-brown body, dark brown head, neck and legs, and characteristic cream-colored rump. Bulls average 700 pounds and are about 5 feet tall at the shoulder; cows are slightly smaller at around 500 pounds and 4.5 feet.

Jerome, Arizona, is a historic mining town built on the steep slopes of Mingus Mountain. Its history is intertwined with the copper boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, earning it the nickname "Wickedest Town in America". Named after Eugene Jerome, the financial backer of the United Verde Copper Company, the town boomed in the early 1900s as a major copper producer, attracting a diverse population and experiencing a period of lawlessness.

Today the mines may be silent, but Jerome has found new life as the largest ghost town in America. Once a thriving mining camp full of miners, bootleggers, gamblers, and prostitutes, now a bustling tourist destination full of artists, musicians, and gift shop proprietors.

Theroute66planner.com: You can’t miss him — a towering cowboy in bright yellow, standing tall just off I-40 near Amarillo. They call him the 2nd Amendment Cowboy, and he’s more than just a fun roadside photo op. He’s a symbol. Of Texas pride, of bold Americana, and yes — of that old saying: “Everything’s bigger in Texas.”

Originally, this oversized figure was built as part of the Cadillac RV Park complex, placed right across from the world-famous Cadillac Ranch. His name — referencing the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment — reflects a local identity that is deeply rooted in values like freedom, tradition, and self-reliance. Whether you agree or not, one thing’s clear: this is Texas, and Texans are not shy about who they are.

And you know what? That’s exactly what we loved about it.

When we traveled through Texas, we met people who were proud, loud, welcoming, and kind. They love their land, their flag, and their stories. They’re the kind of folks who'll wave from their porch or offer you directions with a smile. The kind who make you feel like you’ve just entered someone’s backyard, even if you're thousands of miles from home.

The 2nd Amendment Cowboy fits right into that picture. He’s big, bold, a little outrageous, and standing out in the wide open — just like Texas itself. You might not find historical plaques or long explanations here, but that’s the point. It’s not meant to be explained. It’s meant to be felt.

And as we stood there, dwarfed by this yellow giant with his cowboy hat and commanding presence, we couldn’t help but smile. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it’s pure Route 66.

Nps.gov: Bryce Canyon is not a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheaters or bowls, carved into the edge of a high plateau. The most famous of these is the Bryce Amphitheater, which is filled with irregularly eroded spires of rocks called hoodoos. Perhaps every visitor to the park will spend at least some time marvelling at its four main viewpoints, all found within the first few miles of the park: Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunset Point, and Sunrise Point. Between April and October a shuttle service is operated in this area of the park to reduce congestion.

Other viewpoints are found all along the park's 18-mile main road which travels from the park's only entrance in the north along the plateau rim to its highest elevations in the south (over 9,000 ft / 2,743 m). Hiking trails explore the forests of the plateau, connect between viewpoints along the rim of the Bryce Amphitheater, and wander through the hoodoos below.
