Springfieldillinois.com: Within the walls of this stunning granite monument is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary and three of their four sons. (Lincoln’s oldest son, Robert, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.)

Designed by famed sculptor, Larkin Mead, and completed in 1874, this beautiful landmark is nestled in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

At the entrance to the Tomb itself, there is a bronze bust of Mr. Lincoln where visitors from around the world have stopped to rub the nose of the statue for good luck.

•Amédée Bollée is a name not often remembered outside of enthusiasts in his home country of France, which is a shame, as he was one of the world’s pioneers in propelled motoring, building his first steam-powered carriage in 1873, twelve years before Karl Benz’s “invention” of the automobile. His sons, Amédée Jr. and Léon, took part in the famous Paris-Bordeaux Race in 1895. Later that same year, Léon Bollée patented an automobile design of his own: a three-wheeled vehicle with tandem seats and a horizontal single-cylinder engine. The Léon Bollée was one of the first of what came to be known as voiturettes, small, lightweight French sporting cars. It became quite popular, to the point where it was manufactured not only in France but also in England, where manufacturing rights were owned by pioneer motoring entrepreneur Harry Lawson.

•Operating a Léon Bollée is a fascinating experience. The driver is placed safely behind the passenger (who, in effect, serves as the bumper), with both astride the 882-cubic centimeter engine, which turns at about 800 rpm. Steering is by a wheel placed between the driver’s knees and turned by his right hand, while his left hand operates a lever that, depending on its movement, changes gears, applies the brake, and engages the belt drive to the rear axle.

•A Léon Bollée set a world record for 100 kilometers in 1898 at Etampes, covering the distance in 1 hour and 58 minutes. It was, at the time, the fastest gasoline-powered vehicle on European roads.

•This exciting, pioneering voiturette with proper dating would make an ideal London-to-Brighton competitor, as it is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling early automobiles!

Drivingroute66.com: Upon arrival at the Route 66 Hotel the first thing that strikes you is the beautiful neon and wonderfully decorated lobby. There's no chance that you'll ever forget you're in a Route 66 motel as the walls are plastered with all manner of memorabilia and artwork! The hotel was actually the first Holiday Inn on Route 66 and opened in the 1950's.

This completely remodelled facility features 106 guest rooms and 8 suites, plenty of parking, a Grand Ballroom, and a "mini museum" with an array of vehicles, signs and articles from the golden age of Route 66. The huge Route 66 sign on the floor of the swimming pool is a nice touch!

The location of the Route 66 Hotel and Conference Center is ideal if you plan on seeing the local attractions such as the IL State capitol, Old State Capitol, Abraham Lincoln Museum, Lincoln’s home, and Lincoln's tomb.

On a road trip from Los Angeles to New Mexico, we briefly traveled the historic Route 66 and stopped at this really cool stop. Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch is in Barstow, California and well worth stopping to explore. My wife and I took this road trip in June 2017. I was saddened to h ear that Elmer has since passed way in early 2019. I've procrastinated long enough in posting the content from this trip and I'm now finally getting to it. Hemmings.com: The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is an American icon and one of the most recognizable automobiles ever produced. In 1957, the Bel Air was the top-of-the-line trim on Chevrolet’s full-size cars and its the most sought-after version of the so-called Tri-Five Chevrolets built from 1955-1957. The Bel Air had distinctive two-tone interiors, gold-anodized fender louvers and Bel Air emblems, full-disc wheel covers, and the famous side-sweep trim with a wide, ribbed, anodized aluminum panel on the rear fender. Up front there was an integrated bumper and a gold grille screen that gave the car a massive look, while the rear boasted iconic tailfins, framed in bright trim with taillamps at the bases. The arrival of the 283-cu.in. V-8 in the 1957 Chevrolets was noteworthy but made legendary by the Rochester Fuel Injection option. The top fuel-injected offering was rated at 283-hp making the engine 1 hp per cubic inch. Body styles with the Bel Air trim package included: two-door sedan, four-door sedan, sport coupe, four-door sport sedan, Townsman station wagon, Nomad station wagon (two door), and convertible.

Own a Piece of Automotive History: Any 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is a keeper and will draw admirers wherever it goes. While the two-door coupes, Nomads and convertibles with two four-barrel carburetors or Rochester fuel injection grab headlines, a 1957 Bel Air, four-door with a single-carbureted 283, 265, or 235 six cylinder makes a fun collector car.

National Automobile Museum: The National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) has a “Wow!” factor you don’t often find in a museum. You’ll see more than 200 eye-popping cars with authentic street scenes and sounds. The facades bring displays to life; a hardware store here, a movie theatre there which accompany artifacts from each era. It’s located on the corner of Lake and Mill Streets in downtown Reno.

Yellowstone National Park is like no other place on earth. It seems otherworldly, in the most complimentary way possible.

It’s a vast region, spanning three different states (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming), broad enough to house some dramatic change in landscapes, displaying mountainous areas, vast plains, massive waterfalls, courses of water, an immense lake and - its most known aspect - thousands of thermal features, pools, geysers and springs.

Our three-day visit to the Park was not enough to know Yellowstone. How much time would it take to explore it fully? Years? But was enough to visit some of the most striking places and soak in the atmosphere of wonder.

There are a few Geyser Basins, and thermal features areas, but the best known is the Upper Geyser Basin. There stands the Old Faithful Geyser, the most famous geyser in the world. However, it’s not the most “faithful”. Its eruption intervals vary from 45 to 120 minutes, and there are other more predictable geysers around. Anyway, it’s quite a thrill to see it burst 40 meters into the sky.

The experts say that there are more than 10.000 geothermal features in Yellowstone, created by a subsoil activity exclusive to this area of the planet, namely ancient volcanic eruptions, persistent volcanic activity and unique geographic aspects.

The intense colours of the thermal pools are due to temperature differences, which allow for different types of microorganisms to live and thrive, creating those masterpiece hues.

A nossa visita de três dias ao Parque não foi, obviamente, suficiente para ficarmos a conhecer Yellowstone. Quanto tempo seria necessário para o explorarmos devidamente? Anos? Mas foi o bastante para visitar alguns dos locais mais marcantes e perdermo-nos na sua atmosfera irreal.

Há algumas bacias de actividade geotérmica, áreas delimitadas onde se concentram muitos pontos de interesse. A mais conhecida é Upper Geyser Basin. É lá que encontramos o geyser mais famoso do mundo, Old Faithful. Contudo, não é de perto o mais “fiel”. As cores intensas das fontes ou piscinas geotérmicas devem-se a diferenças de temperatura que permitem que diferentes tipos de microorganismos aí criem o seu habitat, ao mesmo tempo gerando verdadeiras obras de arte cromáticas.

azstateparks.com The Douglas Mansion has been an eye-catching landmark in Jerome since 1916, when James S. Douglas built it on the hill just above his Little Daisy Mine. This former home is now a museum devoted to the history of the Jerome area and the Douglas family. The museum features photographs, artifacts and minerals in addition to a video presentation and a 3-D model of the town with its underground mines. There are more displays outside along with a picnic area offering a beautiful panoramic view of the Verde Valley.

Capitolreefcountry.com: Capitol Reef National Park lies in Utah’s south-central desert, an oasis of colorful sandstone cliffs, impressive domes, and soaring monoliths. Once called “Wayne Wonderland,” the park got its name in part from the great white rock formations which resemble the U.S. Capitol building, and from the sheer cliffs that presented a barrier to early travelers. Early inhabitants referred to the area as the “land of the sleeping rainbow” because of its beautiful contrasts: multi-colored sandstone surrounded by verdant riverbanks and arid desert vegetation, all nestled beneath deep blue skies. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 and reclassified as a national park in 1971. The park is open year-round. Nationalgeographic.com: The unifying geographic feature of Capitol Reef is the Waterpocket Fold. For a hundred miles its parallel ridges rise from the desert like the swell of giant waves rolling toward shore. Exposed edges of the uplift have eroded into a slickrock wilderness of massive domes, cliffs, and a maze of twisting canyons.

Capitol Reef is named for a particularly colorful section of the fold where rounded Navajo sandstone forms capitol-like domes and sheer cliffs form a barrier to travel, often referred to as a "reef." Although a highway now crosses the "reef," travel is still challenging for those wishing to see the park's more remote regions.

nps.gov: The Windows Section is considered by some to be the beating heart of Arches National Park. The area contains a large concentration of arches and is one of the most scenic locations in the park. North Window, Turret Arch, and Double Arch are just a few of the awe-inspiring expanses you’ll find in just over two square miles. Other named features in this area include Garden of Eden, Elephant Butte, and Parade of Elephants.

I started the year with a trip across the Atlantic to visit a friend who lives in Missouri.

It was a trip full of driving down endless American roads, country music, drive thrus, cute little coffee shops, museums, Airbnbs, university campuses, thrift shopping, trucks and 7am trips to find a chapel in the woods.

The University of Missouri in Columbia is locally known as 'Mizzou' and nearly every clothes shop has a black and yellow rack to honour the Mizzou tigers.

Nps.gov: Traces of an old roadbed and weathered telephone poles mark the path of the famous "Main Street of America." Petrified Forest National Park is the only park in the National Park System containing a section of Historic Route 66. From Chicago to Los Angeles, this heavily traveled highway was not only a road--it stood as a symbol of opportunity, adventure and exploration to travelers.

U.S. Route 66 was established in 1926, but it was after WWII that the road earned its place in pop culture. A trip from middle America to the coast could take about a week along swinging 66. No interstate speeds back then! For many, the journey was not just across miles, it was across culture and lifestyles, as each stop along the way offered local flair and regional flavor. Of course, getting to your destination was important, but the trip itself was a reward.

Driving west on Route 66, in the heart of the Painted Desert, one could see a pink edifice glimmering in the clear air. After long hours of travel, here was a special place to take a break, stretch your legs, sip a cold drink, and admire the view.

Chuckwagon, General Store, Bakery, Deli, ATM. It was Sunday morning and Chuckwagon was crowded. It smelled wonderful. There was a long line for whatever they are waiting; I took a pastry and started driving again.

Torrey is located on Utah State Route 24 in Wayne County, Utah. Torrey is the gateway community for Capitol Reef National Park -- just eight miles to the east.

The town was established in the 1880s by Mormon settlers, and was initially known as Youngtown, after John William Young; it is generally held to be named after Jay L. Torrey from Pittsfield, Illinois. Torrey was a member of the Wyoming legislature, who, upon the advent of the Spanish-American War, achieved national attention by proposing the creation of what became three volunteer cavalry regiments, made up ofcowboys and stockmen. Torrey was commissioned Colonel of the 2nd Regiment, the "Rocky Mountain Riders"; the 1st Regiment, the only regiment to see action, was better known as the Rough Riders.

The common use of the name sequoia generally refers to Sequoiadendron giganteum, which occurs naturally only in groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.

Travelgumbo.com: One of the most interesting cars I’ve seen in a long time is this one-of-a-kind century old Rolls-Royce, which features a copper body and other interesting customizations. So far as I know, it is the only copper-bodied Rolls Royce ever made. This rare car was actually conceived in the 1960s, and was created to be a show car. It won the Best in Class honors in Pebble Beach (1991).

This unique Rolls Royce contains more copper and brass than any previous vehicle, and was assembled using full sheets of solid copper in order to avoid welded seams and rivets. The body has only one door because more would have weakened the solid copper body. Accessories are made of nickel and German silver. The wood trim is made from a rare species of ebony.

When making the customization, they had to replace the dashboard, both windshields and their frames. There’s also copper found under the hood, as you can see in the following photo. The 454-cubic-inch, six-cylinder engine is said to perform quietly and flawlessly.

The car is owned by Frank and Janice Hamilton of Reno, Nevada. It is on display at the wonderful National Automobile Museum in Reno.

National Automobile Museum: The National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) has a “Wow!” factor you don’t often find in a museum. You’ll see more than 200 eye-popping cars with authentic street scenes and sounds. The facades bring displays to life; a hardware store here, a movie theatre there which accompany artifacts from each era. It’s located on the corner of Lake and Mill Streets in downtown Reno.
