A transmission spectrum made from a single observation using Webb’s Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) reveals atmospheric characteristics of the hot gas giant exoplanet WASP-96 b.
A transmission spectrum is made by comparing starlight filtered through a planet’s atmosphere as it moves across the star, to the unfiltered starlight detected when the planet is beside the star. Each of the 141 data points (white circles) on this graph represents the amount of a specific wavelength of light that is blocked by the planet and absorbed by its atmosphere.
In this observation, the wavelengths detected by NIRISS range from 0.6 microns (red) to 2.8 microns (in the near-infrared). The amount of starlight blocked ranges from about 13,600 parts per million (1.36 percent) to 14,700 parts per million (1.47 percent).
Researchers are able to detect and measure the abundances of key gases in a planet’s atmosphere based on the absorption pattern—the locations and heights of peaks on the graph: each gas has a characteristic set of wavelengths that it absorbs. The temperature of the atmosphere can be calculated based in part on the height of the peaks: a hotter planet has taller peaks. Other characteristics, like the presence of haze and clouds, can be inferred based on the overall shape of different portions of the spectrum.
The gray lines extending above and below each data point are error bars that show the uncertainty of each measurement, or the reasonable range of actual possible values. For a single observation, the error on these measurements is remarkably small.
The blue line is a best-fit model that takes into account the data, the known properties of WASP-96 b and its star (e.g., size, mass, temperature), and assumed characteristics of the atmosphere. Researchers can vary the parameters in the model – changing unknown characteristics like cloud height in the atmosphere and abundances of various gases – to get a better fit and further understand what the atmosphere is really like. The difference between the best-fit model shown here and the data simply reflects the additional work to be done in analysing and interpreting the data and the planet.
Although full analysis of the spectrum will take additional time, it is possible to draw a number of preliminary conclusions. The labelled peaks in the spectrum indicate the presence of water vapour. The height of the water peaks, which is less than expected based on previous observations, is evidence for the presence of clouds that suppress the water vapor features. The gradual downward slope of the left side of the spectrum (shorter wavelengths) is indicative of possible haze. The height of the peaks along with other characteristics of the spectrum is used to calculate an atmospheric temperature of about 1350°F (725°C).
This is the most detailed infrared exoplanet transmission spectrum ever collected, the first transmission spectrum that includes wavelengths longer than 1.6 microns at such high resolution and accuracy, and the first to cover the entire wavelength range from 0.6 microns (visible red light) to 2.8 microns (near-infrared) in a single shot. The speed with which researchers have been able to make confident interpretations of the spectrum is further testament to the quality of the data.
The observation was made using NIRISS’s Single-Object Slitless Spectroscopy (SOSS) mode, which involves capturing the spectrum of a single bright object, like the star WASP-96, in a field of view.
WASP-96 b is a hot gas giant exoplanet that orbits a Sun-like star roughly 1,150 light years away, in the constellation Phoenix. The planet orbits extremely close to its star (less than 1/20th the distance between Earth and the Sun) and completes one orbit in less than 3½ Earth-days. The planet’s discovery, based on ground-based observations, was announced in 2014. The star, WASP-96, is somewhat older than the Sun, but is about the same size, mass, temperature, and colour.
The background illustration of WASP-96 b and its star is based on current understanding of the planet from both NIRISS spectroscopy and previous ground- and space-based observations. Webb has not captured a direct image of the planet or its atmosphere.
NIRISS was contributed by the Canadian Space Agency. The instrument was designed and built by Honeywell in collaboration with the Université de Montréal and the National Research Council Canada.

using this Sigma macro as a walking-around short-telephoto yields incredibly sharp results. light-leaked a handful of photos on this roll because I was worried the film got stuck and decided to risk a few shots to check. the top half of this photo got erased but otherwise the leaks looked fairly pleasant.

Using The Sky Live Online Planetarium and The Photographer's Ephemeris the comet from this location on the BZ Glenwood Highway was supposed to be a couple of degrees above the left (west) flank of Mt Adams. Even though visually and in binoculars the comet was no where to be seen, I took a series of exposures every 5 minutes from 9:35 to 10:20PM anyway. When I got home and reviewed the exposures on the computer I didn't see anything either. All day Saturday I wondered what had gone wrong, was the sky too bright an hour after sunset? Was the comet lost in the layers of smoke? Did I make a mistake with TPE? I'd deliberately over exposed the images a bit in order to minimize noise and have some shadow detail on the mountain and unknowingly the comet was lost in the slightly overexposed sky, until this morning when on a whim I pulled back the highlights and was pleasantly surprised when the comet appeared in a few of the exposures. My expectation had been a much brighter comet with a tail as long as the mountain is high, but it turned out most of the tail was lost in the still too bright sky and I was too close to the mountain making the comet look tiny in comparison. Three 4 sec exposures, f5.6, ISO 200 combined using masks and lighten layer mode in photoshop. Best when viewed in the lightbox. O15168,69,70
“He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,' he used to say. 'You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
As I walked up towards this little waterfall below High Shoals I could see this as a place in Middle Earth. It so reminds me of Hobbits and Dwarves.
The critical part of me took over at this point and said, the arching tree would look better if it had more leaves, or was not present at all. And, also that whomever designed the boardwalk must have been an Orc, because all the best images were abused by the limitations its creation imposed.
Enough of the critical me (its the better part of me btw. I'm good, very good, at seeing the faults. I work at seeing the good instead. But, my job is such that I am paid to find the bad and fix, so it limits me. btw, I think I'm good at my job too ;) ) But it was such a pretty little scene. I'm not sure how others will see it, but the little arched tree seemed to frame the falls. I did even break the rules and climbed over the railing and tossed leaves into the little maelstrom on the lower right. There was log there that was too large to move or I'd have moved it. It was also snowing, but none of my images shows the flurries as they fell on us.

Interviews and novels.
About my book.
I published a book in old days.

That Japanese and English.
I will make it public for free.
Details were explained to the Amazon site.
How to write a novel.
How to take pictures.
Distance to the work.
They all have a common item.
I made a sentence about what I felt, and left it.
I hope that my text can be read by many people.
Thank you.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway, Alna, Maine. This two-foot gauge line is built on the right-of-way of the original WW&F and runs from Sheepscot Station over three miles of track (with more opening in August 2022). The star attraction is 0-4-4T No. 9, built by the Portland Company in 1891 for the Sandy River, and later used by the WW&F until its abandonment in the 1930s. The railroad is an incredible time machine into the past. You won't find radios - all moves are done with whistle signals and hand signs.
So using my new Tamron 150-600 lens. I love it, but I have never used such a long lens so I have much to learn. This was taken on the pond by my house in Las Vegas, Nevada. duck you can buy my art at james-sage.pixels.com

The cold air bites as a man pauses along a sidewalk and inspects used cars for sale. The car, a 1939 Oldsmobile seems to fancy him. Closest to the camera, is a '36 Pontiac, a '38 Studebaker next to the Olds. Beyond the Olds is a '38 Olds.
By '40, these cars have a few miles on them or, maybe not. Only a few years old by this point, they're trade-ins most likely. But, it's interesting to still see cars of this era in used car lots by the 1950s and early 1960s! The saving grace of these machines is, it didn't break the bank to rebuild a motor, transmission or differential. So, keeping these cars on the road was standard practice by most garages. Today, since cars go for far greater miles, they're "done" by 150,000 or more. It's far too expensive to rebuild anything on a contemporary machine, where as in this generation, it was generally expected. The technology had a lot to do with it as well, not nearly as complex as cars made today.
When girls used to go shopping and Yuzuha always had to wait for them in the end, because she always bought books and then got bored of retail stores... One of them even got a shot of her! All bored, tired but still as pretty as ever!
Using the pin attachment idea (as seen in an earlier pic) I attached an older amazing armory backpack. I like that the MMCB pauldron isn't crushed anymore.
For the last sixty years, car construction has used 'monocoque' principles whereby the chassis and body are built as one strong shell. All the key components such as engine, axles etc are then attached to the shell - the result is a very strong unit with the ability to model exactly how the vehicle's structure will react to an accident or under different handling conditions.
Unfortunately, it's difficult to do this with a bus. Firstly they're far bigger, and secondly their size makes them prone to bumps and scrapes so it needs to be easy to detach external parts and panels for repair. So historically, buses are made as a chassis and then separate bodywork is built on top of it. In the 21st century more car construction techniques are being used, and many buses are built on 'integral' principles, but in general buses are still made on a less hi-tech, robotic basis than cars.
This is a Leyland Olympian for Greater Manchester Transport, at the Northern Counties Motor & Engineering Company factory at Wigan. GMT owned Northern Counties for a while and regarded it as its 'in house' coachbuilder. Most GMT buses were bodied by Northern Counties.
This bus is nearly finished, and the interior is done - you can see the seats through the windows. The next step will be painting into GMT's brown, orange and white colour scheme. The white exterior parts you can see on the bus are fibreglass, while the silver parts are the aluminium panels that are riveted to a strong frame.
One of these buses, GMT bus number 3065, is restored and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester. If you'd like to know more about the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester and its collection of vintage buses, go to www.gmts.co.uk.

It got there in the end! Running a mere 230 minutes behind schedule at this point, a tatty looking 60011 is seen nearing its destination atop the 6B13 04:08 Robeston Sidings to Westerleigh train of loaded fuel tanks. With silver 60066 originally on this train, the fun and games began. The inward working 6B33 from Margam to Robeston was delayed for a couple of hours at Clarbeston Road awaiting a Pilotman courtesy of a track circuit failure on the single line. Even so, 6B13 managed to get away from Robeston an impressive 140 minutes early. This upturn in fortune did not last though as the locomotive soon suffered a total loss of power on the approach to Whitland and was subsequently declared a failure. By the time this train was rescued, the errant tug removed at Margam and then being regulated for passenger services at various places for the remainder of the journey, a delay of almost four hours had been accrued.
The train is seen here trundling along the freight only Westerleigh branch line as it passes Nibley Lane on the outskirts of Yate. It is nice to capture something on what is now a railway backwater. This was not always the way however as this was once the Midland Railway main line between Bristol and Gloucester, also linking up at Mangotsfield with their line to Bath. Opened by the Bristol & Gloucester Railway in 1844 and utilising the routes of several existing tramways, it was decided late on in its formation to be opened as a broad-gauge route (Brunel was the company engineer at the time) with an eye to a working relationship with the GWR as it connected with their broad-gauge system at Bristol and Standish. This wasn’t to be though as the initial dealings between the parties proved to be less than harmonious. The Midland Railway were keen to keep the GWR distanced geographically so, backed financially by the London & North Western Railway with a similar motive, they outflanked and outbid the GWR and purchased this route as well as the connecting standard gauge Birmingham & Gloucester Railway. Both became part of the Midland Railway system from February 1845. Standard gauge rails were laid a few years later which removed the awkward arrangements at Gloucester caused by the break of gauge, although the broad gauge was legally required to be maintained in addition to the standard gauge until the GWR finally converted their system.
Following the nationalisation of the railway system, rationalisation and removal of duplicate and unremunerative routes became the order of the day. The section between Bristol and Yate saw its last passenger trains in December 1969, a few weeks ahead of the proposed closure date owing to a landslip at Fishponds. The remaining through trains were diverted to run along the former GWR lines via Filton and Stoke Gifford, crossing over the former Midland route before utilising the 1903-built connection from Westerleigh Junction to Yate South Junction. From there the former Midland Railway lines are still utilised. The line from Mangotsfield to Bath had seen its last passenger trains in March 1966 but coal traffic to Bath gas works continued until July 1971, the line by this stage effectively being reduced to and worked as a long siding. Track lifting then took place between what are now the ‘Gloucester Roads’ in Barton Hill depot and Westerleigh sidings as well as the remains of the line between Mangotsfield and Bath. Buffer stops underneath the M4 now denote the extent of the remaining operational railway. The short section between Westerleigh and Yate South was retained, albeit singled, as the sidings were still in use, later being utilised as a training school by the civil engineering department. Subsequently, a Refuse Transfer Station for containerised household waste for rail movement to landfill was established and was served by the ‘Avon Binliner’ workings, although this is now disused. The oil depot was constructed in 1990 and continues to be served daily.

Was using the Sony Zeiss FE 24-70mm f4.0 OSS earlier on this trip for the 1st time but got a bit peeved with it. Switched to this FE 55 f1.8 ZA and paired with the Ricoh GR subsequently.
Duly sold off the 24-70 zoom when I got back, after using it on this one trip!
