Post-pregnancy pain, whether it be pelvic floor pain or joint pain, is a shared experience among many postpartum people. However, postpartum pain, especially in pelvic pain, can vary in frequency, length, and intensity. Some people may only experience short-term pain that lasts the first 4 – 8 weeks of their recovery and others may suffer from pelvic pain for up to or over a year after they’ve given birth.
Pelvic organ prolapse and other forms of pelvic floor dysfunction are very common among postpartum people. Symptoms can vary in duration and severity, but many women are likely to experience a variety of symptoms during and after their pregnancy. At Restore Your Core, we’ve noticed similarities in many of our client’s stories. Some of the most common pelvic floor complications our clients experience include:
Urinary incontinence
Fecal incontinence
Pain during intercourse
Vaginal pain
Rectal pain
Low back pain
Pelvic pain
Diastasis Recti – separation of the abdominal muscles
Pelvic organ prolapse
Pubic bone pain
Pelvic girdle pain
Pelvic floor pain can be treated and relieved in many ways. Whether you visit a pelvic floor physical therapist or take part in a program like Restore Your Core, movement specialist or your physical therapists will utilize exercise methods designed to strengthen and restore function to your core, pelvic floor muscles, and relieve any painful symptoms you may be experiencing.
In this article I will attempt to address the most commonly asked questions regarding pelvic pain after giving birth.
How Long Does it Take for Your Pelvic Floor to Recover After Childbirth?
After giving birth, your pelvic floor and core muscles will be in the process of healing for at least a year. Although many women may begin being active again after the first 8 weeks postpartum, often pelvic pain and the symptoms of diastasis recti may be experienced for months postpartum. Both your core and your pelvic region have gone through significant changes in order to accommodate your baby. Attempting to quickly get back into an exercise or workout routine may be unhelpful in your recovery – especially if you are already experiencing complications or painful symptoms.
Every postpartum person is different and the recovery length can change depending on many factors. Healing can take anywhere from a few months to over a year, depending on whether or not there are underlying conditions which may be increasing the pain. While there are no overnight success stories, there are many many success stories of people like you who have healed their pelvic organ prolapse by taking these steps slowly and surely.
However, there are many things you can begin doing now to help begin the healing process. Here is a video summary covering some of the steps you can take to begin healing your pelvic floor.
Is it Normal for Your Pelvis to Hurt After Pregnancy?
Yes! Postpartum pelvic pain is very common. During childbirth, your ligaments and joints become loose as your body is adapting to your child’s weight, abdominal separation, and increased heaviness in your pelvic floor. It is common to experience pain in your pelvic girdle, hips, and joints as a result. Light recovery exercises and movement can also cause minimal pain as you begin strengthening your pelvic floor muscles. Seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist or enrolling in a yoga or postpartum exercise program can help relieve urinary incontinence, back pain, and other postpartum pelvic issues.
How Can I Heal My Pelvic Floor After Delivery?
Pelvic floor physical therapy can be a great treatment program for you and your postpartum pain. A pelvic floor therapist will help create an individualized plan to help target your specific symptoms, condition, and your own recovery goals. Similarly, Restore Your Core can help you become a part of a community of people focused on health and function without promoting unnecessary, culturally influenced slim body programs. Our Restore Your Core Program will help relieve any postpartum pelvic pain, provide treatment options involving exercises for symptoms (i.e. urinary incontinence, pelvic, back, and core pain), education regarding proper breathing patterns, posture, and poses, as well as additional tips and guidance on how to safely and effectively recover from postpartum pain.
What is Pelvic Floor Therapy Postpartum?
Pelvic floor physical therapy treatment options may vary depending on the severity of your condition. If you decide to see a physical therapist, you’ll have an initial assessment to determine what treatment will be best. An assessment can include vaginal and rectal manual palpations. Palpations can help determine the strength of your core and pelvic floor muscles, areas of tenderness and pain, as well as muscle tightness.
We do not offer physical therapy, but movement therapy. Restore Your Core specializes in exercise treatment as well as education for women suffering from pelvic floor pain and any other postpartum issues. Below is a list of several exercises we cover in our program.
Supported Slight Backbend Pelvic Stretch:
This is a fantastic pelvic stretcher. Using a pillow or bolster of some kind, gently lower your back to rest on top of the pillow. Once in position, slowly bring your feet together so the soles of your feet are touching. Keep your knees bent, but gently allow them to open sideways. If you feel any discomfort at all in your back or inner thighs, you can use pillows for further support or get rid of the bolster. Relax after 30 seconds or more (roughly 15 to 20 breaths)
Supported Pelvic Squat:
This stretch is an incredible hip and pelvis stretch. Grab a low stool or a stack of books and with your feet spread wide and toes pointed out sideways, gradually extend your buttocks and lower yourself to the blocks. If you are struggling to balance yourself, it may be helpful to use a wall for back support. It is important that if you experience any discomfort during these stretches that you reposition yourself until you can firmly plant your feet and bend without pain. Stay in a squatted position for close to 30 seconds (5-10 deep breaths), stand back up, relax, and repeat several times. Please note, that for some people with prolapse – a deep squat can really irritate and aggravate things due to bearing down, so be sure to only do this one if you feel comfortable that you are not bearing down in a low squat.
Yoga for Pelvic Floor Muscle Relaxation
Legs up the wall:
This exercise offers a lot of people relief from their symptoms and it is a great way to downtrain the pelvic floor. I always teach this with a block / pillows / blankets under the hips for elevation. The elevation is pretty key so be sure to get your hips on something. Elevate your hips and simply bring your legs up a wall. Move closer or further away from the wall depending on your body and comfort. Stay for 3-4 relaxing breaths and then you have a few options. One is to bend your knees and have the soles of your feet touching while still leaning legs against the wall. Adjust your body to make this more comfortable. No stress or tension in your hips. The other is to simply bend your knees and place the soles of your feet on the floor and relax your pelvis and pelvic floor and finally, option #3 is to open your legs wide and keep them against the wall while straddled. Find the position that best allows you to relax and release. Hold for 5-8 breaths.

Urinary casts are tiny tube-shaped particles produced by the kidney and present in the urine in certain disease states that can be found when urine is examined under the microscope during a test called urinalysis. First described by Henry Bence Jones, casts form via precipitation of protein which is secreted by renal tubule cells.
Fossil Fuels are bad for your boobs.
That’s pretty much it. It turns out that the chemicals produced during the extraction, refining, and use of fossil fuels; high levels of benzene, toluene, and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and a few other bad guys are known carcinogens. That’s why Honor the Earth is introducing the pipeline free breast campaign, as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Now, just to be clear, we’re not the only ones on this. Last year, Baker Hughes, who makes the enormous drill bits for the fracking industry introduced some pink drill bits for breast cancer awareness month, and donated $l00,000 for the second year in a row to Susan G. Komen, the best-funded breast cancer organization in the U.S. In return, apparently Baker Hughes got to use the specific shade of pink Susan G. Komen has trademarked. (Who knew they could trademark a shade of pink?)
Let’s get real: Pipelines, Fracking and the Tar Sands are Bad for your Boobs; they are bad for your health:
Researchers have known for years that the fossil fuel industry creates and releases carcinogens into the environment. Back in the 80’s researchers at Lawrence Livermore Labs in California, found that breast cells growing in culture exposed to benzopyrene had altered genetic make-up. Benzopyrene is the most common carcinogen in the environment that results from burning fossil fuels.
Benzene, a major chemical associated with the fossil fuel industry, is recognized as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Benzene is known to influence the development of leukemia, breast and urinary tract cancers. Benzene has also been linked to reduced red and white blood cell production, decreased auto-immune system, deformed spermatozoa and chromosomal mutations.
Benzene itself is known carcinogen.
Radon, an odorless radioactive gas which is found existing in bedrock has also been linked to cancer and the fossil fuel industry. Exposure to radon is the second largest cause of lung cancer in the US, and new studies have linked fracking to increased radon exposure. Radon can be released into groundwater and the air by the fracking process. Radon also travels with the fracked oil and gas through the pipelines to refineries and to the point of use, exposing communities along the way.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent chemicals that are also known carcinogens and genetic mutagens. PAHs can also affect childhood development, including; asthma, low birth weight, heart malformations, and behavior disorders.
Communities around the Alberta tar sands fields have been suffering from dangerously high levels of PAHs in the environment and have been reporting subsequently high rates of rare cancers and other diseases.
“More women in the community are contracting lupus. Infant asthma rates have also increased. During the summer months, it is not uncommon to find mysterious lesions and sores after swimming in Lake Athabasca. “When you look at what is happening in the area, it can’t not be related to development,” says Eriel Deranger, a spokesperson for the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation. ‘Too many times, we see things in the animals and health that the elders have never seen before.’”
Spills and accidents can also expose communities to PAHs. After the 2010 BP/Deepwater Horizon spill, scientists found PAH levels to be 40 times higher than background levels. Fisherman also reported mutations and tumors on local shrimp and crabs. Scientists from several disciplines and universities cite PAHs as most likely cause.
The effects of these chemicals on humans and the environment should be a major concern of American lawmakers. Will we begin to see a sharp rise in rare cancers in oil producing and refining communities? Transportation corridor communities are also at risk. North Dakota had over 300 oil spills reported as of 2012, but the self reporting of oil and pipeline companies, including Enbridge ( with 800 spills in a decade) is in fact a risk to your breasts, and your health.. For sure, the l7,000 miles of pipeline in North Dakota as well as nearly l0,000 miles of pipeline in Minnesota, pose some risks.
The EPA is finally taking notice of the vast amount of toxins being emitted by the oil refining process, recently passing tough new restrictions on emissions.
In 2012, Marathon Oil completed a $2.2 billion upgrade on their 8l year old Detroit facility to process tar sands oil. Marathon’s expansion promises to create 135 jobs and generate millions of dollars in tax revenues. Even more important, Marathon says, it will help ensure that Michigan's only oil refinery will operate well into the future.
“…A reporter asked me what tar sands smell like, and it smells like death. And that’s what it is…”
Emma Lockridge
The Marathon oil refinery is in Boynton, Michigan; zip code 48217. It is known as Michigan’s most polluted zip code.
“ … We have a tar sands refinery in our community and it is just horrific. We are sick community.” Emma Lockridge explains. We have tried to get them to buy us out. They keep poisoning us. And we cannot get them to buy our houses. “ I can’t hardly breathe here. I have had kidney failure. Neighbor died on dialysis, Neighbor next door with dialysis. Neighbor across the street has kidney failure. The chemicals in our pipelines and are in our water will be the same chemicals that come through your land and can break and contaminate. We have cancer, we have autoimmune illnesses, we have MS, we have chemicals that have come up into our homes through the sewer. Those are from the companies, they end up in the public water and sewer system...They are poisoning us.”
Join Honor the Earth for this campaign. Fossil Fuels are bad for your breasts. And, a fossil fuel free future is healthy for all women, children, men and Mother Earth.
Models for the campaign continue to come forward. Jane Kleeb, Executive Director of Bold Nebraska, a lead organization fighting the Keystone XL Pipeline joined for a picture, noting” I’m standing up against Keystone XL because of the risks to our water and our health. The oil and gas industry denies the link of their risky product and cancer, just like the tobacco companies did years ago. Today, we stand up for women’s health."
Kandi Mossett, of the Indigenous Environmental Network posed with two logos; Mossett is from the Ft. Berthold reservation, where radioactive and salt spills, as well as radioactive fracking socks litter sections of the reservation. Supporting groups include VDay, Indigenous Women’s Network, and Babes Against Biotech. Other women are encouraged to join, and the materials can be downloaded off the Honor the Earth web site.

Cindy Barshop, former star of the Bravo series Real Housewives of New York City and the founder of the wildly successful Completely Bare spa, is once again tackling the taboos of women’s health and sexuality with her newest endeavor, VSPOT Medi-Spa.
Barshop describes VSPOT as “the place where science, sex, and strength come together.” She and her team of gynecologists specialize in non-surgical solutions for the things women never talk about, like vaginal dryness, looseness, painful sex and urinary leakage (incontinence). VSPOT the authority on vaginal laser technology offers women a way to prevent and correct the problems that significantly impact their quality of life. In addition, the services help women to enhance sexual pleasure.
Since Barshop has a history of talking about the things that no one else will, we sat down to hear her uncensored story.
What inspired you to start VSPOT?
After my girls were born, things were different down there. I was treated with the FemiLift for vaginal dryness, looseness, and SUI (stress urinary incontinence) I didn’t expect much, but the results were incredible. It felt like I had found the fountain of youth for my V. I couldn’t believe I had never heard of it before, or known that there was such a simple solution.
Can you describe the FemiLift?
We insert a slender wand into your vagina, and its 360-degree rotating laser works to strengthen the muscles in your vaginal wall. It’s as simple as a pap smear, but it makes sex feel incredible again.
So, is VSPOT a place for mothers?
Yes—and everyone else. VSPOT is for all women of every age and lifestyle. We address—and correct—the issues that come along with childbirth, menopause, or even just getting older. Women experience these symptoms for so many reasons, including the medications they may be on. In fact, many of our clients are breast cancer survivors who come to VSPOT as an estrogen-free way to correct the effects of chemotherapy and medication on their vaginas.
If I’ve never had an issue with my V, what would I do at VSPOT?
So much! Services like the FemiLift are amazing and help so many women—but there’s the “fun” stuff, too. For example, women love the O-Shot. It’s a simple procedure that uses your own blood plasma, injected into the vagina, to enhance sexual pleasure and intensify orgasms for up to a year afterwards. There’s also the V-Steam, which I liked to describe as a luxe, aromatic “facial” for your vagina.
What are the treatments like?
They are quick, and easy. Faster than waiting for a latte, and you’ll feel better afterwards! There is no surgery, no downtime, no anesthesia and no pain. For FemiLift, we recommend a series of three ten-minute treatments, 4 weeks apart for optimal, long-lasting results.
What is VSPOT like?
It’s intimate and relaxing. It’s quiet and it’s confidential. Our goal is to create a unique and luxurious experience that improves your quality of life.
Who performs the treatment?
Female gynecologists, and pelvic floor Doctors including renowned Sexual Health Guru Dr. Carolyn Delucia, administer all of our treatments. We want women to feel relaxed and secure, and an all-female team is integral to this intimate experience.
What is your goal with VSPOT?
I want women to feel good. And, more than that, I want them to feel good about feeling good. This is a basic human right—and it’s time for women to claim what’s theirs.

Dextranomer is a hydrophilic dextran polymer that has been used as a 'cleansing agent' for various types of exudating wounds or ulcers. Dextranomer/hyaluronic acid (Dx/HA) is a copolymer in a gel of hyaluronic acid. The dextranomer is in the form of microspheres that are 80 to 200 μm in diameter and do not fragment, eliminating the risk of distance migration. DxHA is injected subureterally into the urinary bladder to correct congenital vesicoureteral reflux, as was done in this case. It is also used to treat stress urinary incontinence.
Dx/HA is a highly viscous solution, nonimmunogenic and biocompatible, with no risk of allergy or granuloma formation. Hyaluronic acid functions as a carrier gel and is resorbed within 2 weeks after injection. The dextranomer microspheres are biodegraded very slowly by hydrolysis and remain at the injection site for up to 4 years. The color of the microspheres when stained with H&E is variable, apparently depending upon the hematoxylin/eosin ratio and the particular product used. Prior to degradation the microspheres resemble and may be confused with embolic microspheres.
