...with low clouds and mist around....I always feel so lucky to live in the Dales! Cotterdale left of centre

Life without a keyboard is hard. Looking this good is easy tho. Ayyyyyyy.

One week after getting carpel tunnel surgery on my dominant right hand, I have been going through camera withdrawals. So, this morning I took out my little lens and went to my favorite local park. No tripod so all hand held, so dont look too close, lol.

Letchworth State Park was voted #1 state park in the US last year. It boasts three major waterfalls and numerous smaller ones. It also gets some amazing fall colors, when the weather is right for them.

Another from the archive.

Upper Antelope Canyon at noon, Page, AZ

The canyon is accessible only by guided tour, lead by Navajo (the land is owned by the Navajo).

I read that tripods are no longer allowed and photography specific tours are no longer available. I used a tripod when I went, but I guess a fast image stabilized lens will be required from now on...

The stories the guides tell of the land, the discovery of the place… are as interesting as the place itself.

Flash floods have been known to occur here, so it is best to avoid monsoon season, and stay with your guide at all times.

Speaking of backup batteries, it is a good thing I followed my own advice, because my battery died just before I took this shot. The 20D was still new to me then, and I wanted to see how many shots I could get from one battery. I still remember the look on the guys face next to me when I said to myself “uh oh, dead battery!”

Please have a look at my Arizona album for more.

Upper Falls is at the trail head of the 6 mile hike that connects the major areas of Hocking Hills. A beautiful gorge trail, the hike winds past several waterfalls and caves along the way.

"Old Man's Cave derives its name from the hermit Richard Rowe who lived in the large recess cave of the gorge. His family moved to the Ohio River Valley around 1796 from the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee to establish a trading post. He and his two dogs traveled through Ohio along the Scioto River in search of game. On one side trip up Salt Creek, he found the Hocking Region. Rowe lived out his life in the area and is buried beneath the ledge of the main recess cave." (hockinghills.com/old_mans_cave.html)"

Heart Spring

Upper Geyser Basin

Yellowstone National Park

Immediately southeast of the Lion Group, Heart Spring is a pretty pool of clear blue water, 15 feet deep and 10 feet across, enclosed by white sinter mats and orange-brown algae. It was named in the 1950s because of its heart-like shape. The pool is generally inactive, its water temperature a little below boiling. www.americansouthwest.net

As the San Rafael River descends the eastern side of the San Rafael Swell it cuts two fantastic slot canyons--the Upper Black Box and the Lower Black Box. The Upper, or upstream slot canyon, is approximately 5 miles long, has a maximum depth of 400 feet and a minimum width of 25 feet. Experienced cannoneers rappel either 90 or 180 feet (two routes) into the slot and then wade and swim several miles downstream until the slot dwindles and they can safely exit.

As I was setting up for this shot, I saw that a strap had become draped over the lens. I impatiently pulled it free, inadvertently unscrewing the lens hood, which fell and bounced with a ping on the rock I was standing on. I froze, and made no effort to catch it, for I was perilously close to the edge. But I watched, and listened. It rolled, dropped off the edge, then bounced repeatedly, each time making a distinctive "ping." When the pings stopped, I knew that my lens hood was at the bottom of the slot canyon.

If perchance you are swimming and wading in the Upper Black Box and find a lens hood, please send it to me.

It was looking like Friday morning was the best chance of sunlight for a while, so I set my alarn for 5:30am and headed to Edale.

A pleasure to bump to Nicholas Butt in the village. Nick didn't have time to head up here but it was nice to have a chat (in between trying to breathe) on the way up to The Nab. I arrived up here minutes before sunrise but had to wait a little while for the sun to break through the cloud.

I thought I'd try something different along with the compositions I always re-shoot. This round boulder caught my eye and I managed to balance the right hand side. Not easy with the wind.

Firescald Creek enters Savage Gulf across Greeter Falls and a few hundred yards downstream empties into Big Creek, one of three gorges that link to form a wide, steep valley that came to be known as Savage Gulf. The “Savage” part of the name is not necessarily meant to be descriptive but rather gets that moniker in honor of Samuel Savage, an early settler in the area. The “Gulf” part of the name is not necessarily meant to be confusing but rather is just a local term for “gorge”. Dedicated in 1974, the Savage Gulf State Natural Area is a 15,600 acre scenic wilderness with 55 miles of trails but no roads into the gulch. It also contains 500 acres of some of the finest virgin hardwood forest in the eastern United States, and is listed on the U.S. Registry of National Natural Landmarks.

Greeter Falls has two stages. This 15 foot drop is the upper section of the falls. A short distance downstream is the larger Lower Greeter Falls, a 50 foot drop, which can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/tim_lumley/43625147245/

This was taken during a crazy dust storm at Upper Antelope Slot Canyon. A couple short stories. First, the dust fell like slightly visible rain. Try as I might to protect my camera, the dust took it out in the end. I suggest that if you are in similar conditions that you tape up your camera with kitchen wrap and gaffer tape. Tape anything that opens and use a clear wrap over as much as possible.

When this image was taken I was in a group of tourists being let by the Indians who owned the land and controlled the canyons. I paid extra for a "photo" tour, which meant we had a spot to ourselves for 30 seconds before the crowd surged through. Not my kind of photography. A nice couple was in my group and the wife was very pretty. I only had seconds and wasn't able to talk her into standing in the light for me. I can imagine the shot, can you? (Alfred, if you're listening, how about putting in a model? If not, I'll be stuck with a jaguar again!) I ran into that couple at Horseshoe Bend at sunrise and they were delightful.

It's been a while since I had any landscape photos to show. Here we go again! The first one is an early morning view of the upper Enstligenfall with some vegetables in the foreground.

The leaves are pretty much all on the ground, but this is still a pretty cool place. My first visit - warning: excessive numbers of waterfall photos will be uploaded in the coming few weeks!

The crystal clear waters of Upper Waterton Lakes. This is in Waterton National Park in Canada looking south to Glacier National Park in the USA.

Sumter National Forest, Westminster, South Carolina...I was really glad for the opportunity to get out and shoot today! The cloud cover worked out well for about seven hours and I visited four landmark waterfalls starting in Westminster and worked my way across over to Tamassee. I arrived here at the trailhead right when the sun hit the horizon. This series of waterfalls known as Brasstown Falls (actually in five prominent cascading sections) was one of the first I visited in 2017 when I seriously undertook waterfall photography, so it owns a special place in my heart.

The seemingly impossible task of taking a photo at Upper Moor without another photographer (or in this case 3) in the shot. I could have removed them, but they were a nice bunch and provide a bit of scale. I did, however, remove the hideous barbwire fence that has appeared on top of the wall.

Upper (and lower) Antelope Canyon are worth while visiting. But if you like to take photos, try and book the photography tour instead of the regular tour where you are not allowed to bring backpacks or tripods. Generally, handheld shooting requires high ISO between 2000 and 50000 at f2.8. Not the right stuff for art :) The tour itself is interesting and worth while.
