A visit over to the local Middletown Park in Middletown, Maryland got me to a place where some maple trees were in peak autumn color. And, as always, my favorite position when capturing these beauties is to stand under them and shoot upwards.
This was a late afternoon photograph and, after about a dozen or so photos, enough to get a "best of the group", I went off to shoot some ducks in the proverbial nearby pond and then was off to see about grabbing an ice cream cone for my efforts.
What I especially like about the shot is the two nearby trees coming into the composition from the two corners, upper left and lower right. As such, we have three dark features in an otherwise bright scene, making for some magical contrast. Darks and lights make a wonderful marriage most times with, of course, some very pleasant exceptions.
'Route of the Streamliners' via the 'Mainline through the Rockies'.
17 of Union Pacific's finest hold-outs from the 'Streamliner' era are surrounded by the Pagodas Canyon's ruby red cliffs on the former D&RGW Dotsero cut-off. The special train is making a round trip run between Denver-Dotsero-Denver and is now returning eastbound having just highballed Dotsero, CO a few minutes previous. Today the breathe-taking scenery found on the former Rio Grande in Colorado (and Utah), including this narrow passage in the mountains which the Colorado River and railroad share space, can still be viewed daily from onboard the California Zephyr….albeit Amtrak's California Zephyr.

We caught up with the 29G we saw at Salem earlier for this seen in the middle of Christiansburg Grade. Still gloomy, but the fog on the hills added some ambience.
UP 1943 leads its train into Proviso Yard, with a UP 6576 and KCS 4785 trailing. The light power sitting under the signal bridge was only seconds away from blocking this view of the 1943 as it was flying towards proviso.
Here is my redemption shot from the air of this train as it worked east at Loring. Not too shabby. Wish the background looked better but this is the brown wasteland that we get here in Kansas from November to March.

UP Troy Grove job heading south past the NB distant approach signal for the BN Aurora Sub diamond. The train is about to pass through the tiny little town of Shabbona Grove, IL, on a day where the temps struggled to get to 5 degrees.
This is a close-up HDR photo that I just took of cod liver oil capsules. I placed the capsules in a shallow wine glass that is also reflecting the light from the windows.
Eastbound tonnage bound for North Platte, Nebraska climbs the Sierra just below Troy. The center foreground was once the #2 main track right of way that pierced Sierra granite via tunnel 40. After the decision was made to abandon tunnel 40, the new alignment followed the original CP (track 1) alignment around the outside of the mountain.

Looking up at bare trees against a blue sky. The fact that these trees are still so bare demonstrate just how late Spring is this year.
If one can't find anything interesting to photograph directly infront of them, changing POV and looking up will often provide a solution!
My girlfriend and I went to see the sunrise that morning. Just before we were about to leave, she went to the shore to wash off the sand. I snuck up on her and captured a few shots
UP 8091 (C45AH...I think) brings two visitors to town in the form of CSX 748 & 522.

Street art from, perhaps appropriately, the Graffiti Wall at Bondi Beach, Sydney. Artist unknown.
Not the most elaborate piece down there and, like most of the work, maybe a language I'm not in tune with - but the eye-catching combination of bold lines, palette and graphical design, very much appealed.

I call this " Up The Track" because from where we are staying in the United Campgrounds in Durango, Colorado, this is just up the track from our sight.
You just have to wait for the last train of the evening, spray plenty of bug spray and walk up the track on the Animas River to see this gorgeous reflection.
Kanjavec is the highest ski touring summit in the Julian Alps. Here, it's seen from the east, from Veliki Draški vrh. Below is Velska dolina (valley, Velo polje), only one possibility of skiing down. On the left is Mišelj vrh, more a goal of summer tours.
These blue flowers were the hot-spot for several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at Brookside Gardens. It was fascinating to watch several of them work the flowers over time, occasionally flying off in pairs as they "fought" over territory, and resting on the nearby branches from their exhausting flights. This female checks this flower for nectar as both benefit from the interaction, she gets the nectar and the flower gets pollinated.
Taken 6 August 2016 at Brookside Gardens in Montgomery County, Maryland.
UP train CBNP passes the local at Kearney. I was part of a team covering this train from Council Bluffs to North Platte as some images were used in an article in the November 1995 issue of Trains Magazine.
As you drive towards Portland, you will end up in a parking lot quite close to the lighthouse and beyond which you will not be able to proceed...Portland Bill Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful lighthouse locations I have ever been to...I have always dreamed of going well into the ocean and framing the lighthouse with the adjacent rocks and water. This is one place that offers this unique vantage point.
Although I had shot this almost a year ago, I somehow had overlooked one of the best places I had been during my trip to the Jurassic Coast. I can still feel the bitter cold that was that morning. The hues in the sky were just there for a brief moment after which the sun came out fully well and eclipsed the colors that were there on display.
Have a nice day everyone!
