Wild South Africa

Kruger National Park

Critically endangered White-backed Vultures waiting for the sun to create warm-air pockets that would enable them to soar over distances of up to 150 km. They are Africa's most common large vulture, an accomplished scavenger that feeds on the carcasses of Africa's large animals.

SD 40N 1810 leads the local delivering the first three tankers to Large truck Gas station which seems odd since the refinery is just across the road.

This male ruddy duck is all dressed up in his finest breeding plumage and sky-blue beak, ready to woo some lady duck. Good luck, Mr. Ruddy.

Before and After

UP train LMN34 wanders south along the Peoria Gateway near Newburg, Iowa, on a autumn afternoon

Lone Survivor

UP 7607 cruises along the Columbia River at milepost 129 of the Portland Sub, taking in some sun before the fog returns, as seen creeping in the background. With its six total units all online, the detector at 133.2 read out a speed of 69MPH, roughly matching the 70MPH speed limit on I-84. A lonely pole stands proudly next to the right of way, one of a few remaining along this section of the Portland Sub who were lucky enough to be given white tape to mark each quarter mile. This particular pole looks like a decorated veteran with all 4 stripes and a milepost sign present to mark the 129th mile of track east of Portland.

Despite the entire river being covered in low hanging clouds at sunrise, it’s a particularly pleasant day with little wind and a high in the low 40s. The rain from the previous few days reset the stagnant air that was present over the course of the previous week, and the clear atmosphere would yield a particularly brilliant sunset. More on that eventually.

Entwistle Reservoir walkabouts

I'm not sure what train this is but I saw the same power doing the same thing two days in a row so I suspect it's a local transfer job of some sort. At any rate, this pair of UP Deuces is heading north out of Fort Worth and soon to go over the Trinity River. 5/18/18

Holiday wishes to all my Flickr contacts & friends....six days & counting :-)

These guys used to be regular visitors to the tarn. Recent years though have seen a decline in sightings, so it was good to come across this beauty.

The once-common Pochard is now under threat because its populations are declining rapidly. The UK is an important winter destination for the Pochard, with 48,000 birds visiting our wetlands and coasts.

Today featured two things I never thought I would see on the mainline again: a pair of Execs on a coal train and a UP SD60 on the point. Here is LNV46 South of Valparaiso.

Turning away from the playa of the Smoke Creek Desert at Sano, the rails of Western Pacific's Fifth Subdivision start up the east side of Sand Pass. Highlighting the route, with over 13K feet and 20K tons, a westbound North Platte, Nebraska to Fresno, California manifest makes the climb to Sand Pass.

This was part of the damage caused by Storm Doris. Literally thousands of starfish washed up on Talacre beach :-(.

A close-up of a very old bath drain plug sitting on a tile shelf, stylized with an aged film effect.

Developed with Darktable 3.6.0. I used GIMP's G'MIC "Stylize" filter to embed the film emulsion layer into the photo.
