Think that the man and woman sitting on the left are Edgar T Obree and his wife Bessie – visiting from South Africa.

Unknown camera tool.

The head has the form of a sprocket wheel so my first guess is that's ment to drive something. Maybe to cock a shutter which is removed from the camera.

The outer diameter of the head is 6mm and it has 18 teeth. The hole in the head has a diameter of approx. 3mm.

More information very welcome.

886428 Private

H.Knutson

5th Battalion Canadian Inf.

14th December 1917 Age 22

Name: KNUTSON, HARRY HOYE

Rank: Private Regiment: Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) Unit Text: 5th Bn. Age: 22 Date of Death: 14/12/1917 Service No: 886428

Additional information: Son of Steinulf Knutson Svalastogh and his wife Svaanoug Olavsdatter, of Notteroy, Tansberg, Norway. Born at Seljord Telemarken, Norway. Grave/Memorial Reference: 54. 10. Cemetery: NORWICH CEMETERY, Norfolk

Harry Knutson was born on the 14/09/1895. His enlistment papers can be seen on the Canadian Archive site

At the time of his enlistment he was living at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He gives his place of birth as Tonsberg (Tansberg?). He gives his profession as a Labourer, and he was single. He attested on the 28th February 1916.

He is described as 5 feet 8.5 inches, with Light Brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. His religion is given as Lutheran.

In April 1917, the 5th Battalion was part of the assault on the Pimple, the highest point on Vimy Ridge, during which the Canadian Corps successfully captured that position. Following the victory at Vimy Ridge, the 5th Battalion formed the left flank of the 1st Division’s attack on the town of Arleux-en-Gohelle. The Battle at Arleux-en-Gohelle was the only allied success during the advance on Hill 70, a critical position needed to defend the Canadian line. In August 1917 the Battalion, as part of the 2nd Canadian Brigade, was successful in taking the hill and holding it despite suffering heavy casualties. During the Second Battle of Passchendaele, officially known as the Third Battle of Ypres, the 5th Battalion fought the enemy in close combat over a 17-day period. On November 12, 1917, after three months of fighting, Passchendaele was finally taken.

The 5th had been particularly involved in the battles on the 30th October 1917, when they and other fresh Canadian troops were thrown in to restore some momentum to the Allied offensive. Although the unit was one of the few to achieve its objectives, casualties were heavy, with a significant number gassed. I suspect Private Knutson was evacuated to the Norfolk War Hospital and probably passed away from his injuries.

From my investigations of Australian casualties who are buried in Earlham Cemetery, (and for which there is a wealth of on-line information), this seems to be a familiar theme. I don’t know if the hospital specialised in treating gas poisoning, or whether it was simply so common that all War Hospitals received their share.

This bit brace is one of many hasty impulse "investments". I liked the look of it and the fact that it was fitted with rosewood really sealed the deal. I was aware of issue when I bought it but I did not even check the jaws. There were none.

Well, sometimes jaws can easily be replaced bit this example calls for very deep jaws and although I have found a pair that works, they're not ideal. Also the top handle was very wobbly and despite much time repairing it, I still have not been able to stabilize the top handle. The chuck wobbles as well which is really all down to wear and cannot be fixed. The left hand brass handle ferrule is cracked which makes the rosewood handle slide and to really rub salt in my wounds one of the ratchet dogs is worn out meaning it will not operate once loaded with the friction of a auger bit.

Well, as much as it was a waste if money, it was a very good learning experience. This is the first bit brace I have taken apart completely - and I mean completely.

If you know the maker and model, please let me know. I have found absolutely no markings on this one.

Sometimes the idea of a photo manipulation just comes to my head, but actually i do not find all the resources i need to do it as i see it, so i start searching stock images, and it comes out way different ! for example, for this one i had this idea of me jumping off a cliff, or of a skyscraper, but i didn´t have any of them, so i thought this would work :)

Thanks for watching !

Circa 1850's....

Took this while on a dive in Toyapakeh, Nusa Penida, a fair distance away from the wall and within the channel. This was taken with the wide-angle and is about 30cm long. I have no idea what kind of organism this is, maybe a tunicate but this is the first time I have seen something like this.

This thankfully amounted to nothing more than the leporine equivalent of saber-rattling - still, it's quite understandable not wanting those choppers taking a nip. ^_^;
