The Maryland Military Department came together to recognize the diverse backgrounds and cultures of its members through the seventh annual Unity Day celebration at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore, Md., April 26.
Unity Day is an opportunity to observe the different ethnic backgrounds that make up the Military Department and educate the members on what makes each culture unique. This year’s theme was ‘Recognizing Diversity and Religion – one nation, many voices.’

"Garden of Unity" scupltures in Carlton Gardens. This public artwork by Akio Makigawa was commissioned and completed in 2001 to celebrate the unity of the people of Victoria for the Australian federation centennial. The "Garden of Unity" sculptures by Akio Makigawa are located in the forecourt of the Melbourne Museum in Carlton Gardens. These sculptures were created in 1989 and are part of a public art installation designed to enhance the museum's entrance area. Makigawa, a Japanese-Australian artist, was known for his contemplative works that often incorporated elements of Japanese spirituality and Australian natural forms. The sculptures are constructed from Port Fairy bluestone and Carrara marble, materials chosen for their regional and cultural significance. The design features three obelisk-like structures topped with undulating marble forms, symbolising unity and connection.
