Secretary Rita Landgraf welcomed about 80 mental health professionals, advocates and consumers to an April 1 conference, "Understanding Loneliness." Secretary Landgraf said loneliness is increasing, but especially for vulnerable populations such as people with serious mental illness, seniors, and people with other disabilities.
"As humans, we need those meaningful social interactions that people who care about us or provide," Secretary Landgraf said.
A 2010 AARP study of adults found that 40% said that they had been lonely, a figure that was double the rate in the 1980s.
The conference, sponsored by DHSS' Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, also included a consumer panel, experts on statistics and trends, and recommendations for reaching out to people with serious mental illness.

I'm reading Danilo Kis's "A Tomb for Boris Davidovich" and realizing how little I understand of Russian History. A Slav himself, Kis wrote a lot about Russian politics and the failure of communism. While I love Kis's prose, I feel under-prepared for his discourse on 1930s Russia.
And beyond that, I suppose, I'd like to understand my own, and by extension our culture's own nostalgic love-affair with despots of the past. I mean, it's not like we're short of them today. And beyond that, the sort of ambivalence of the American left wing (of which I'm apart) towards communism.
Which is why it's just easier to ignore history.

Project: “Concrete circus”
Theme: Circle of life
Title: Understanding
Concrete Circus to me means the circle of life: how people live in buildings, use them and how they decay. The sculpture holds four parts of life: from birth, meaning being built; being old and sick; as being damaged and how the colour changes as we move towards death.
I used around 6-7 bags of clank clay to create this sculpture. This took me 1 week at college: about 25 hours. Scale 110 cm 60kg.
At the end of time I take it back to the studio to record the final process of sickness to death as how this sculpture is about to die, then took it back out side until nothing is left but rock.
