My understanding is the Carolina praying mantis and Arizona praying mantis are the only native North American mantis species. The other fifteen species are introduced. This mantis was found inside my house. I captured him and held him for a few minutes then placed him on Russia Salvia for a photo. As you can see, he's preening himself, something only a relaxed mantis will do. Of course, he was released unharmed.

I've been taking a little bit of a break due to the sudden loss of my grandfather earlier this month. I wanted to create a photo to portray my emotions at this time. His funeral is coming up and I've just spent time thinking about what I'm doing with my real life, things I still want to accomplish, and the goals that I've made for myself. Thank you to everyone who has been understanding during my time away. I'll be returning to secondlife soon - Danielle

"Person of strong character are usually the happiest. They do not blame others for troubles that can be traced to their own actions and lack of understanding. They know that no one has the power to add to their happiness or detract from it, unless they themselves allow the adverse thoughts or wicked actions of others to affect them." P. Yogananda

Continuing the theme of "quirky Indiana", today's feature is this old Impala sitting on the top of a metal tower.

One may ask "why", and I don't have an answer. But this is (or was) part of a menagerie of unusual stuff that included a vintage motel sign, old railroad cars and junk trucks. All located at a train station that was converted into a seafood restaurant. The business has since closed and to my understanding most of this stuff have been removed from the property. I'm not sure if this car is still there or not!

UPDATE: Unfortunately this car (and everything else) has been removed from the property as of 10/2021.

Learning and understanding together, a team work to achieve success!

The National Gallery Singapore is an art gallery located in the Downtown Core of Singapore. Opened on 24 November 2015, it oversees the world’s largest public collection of Singapore and Southeast Asian art, consisting of over 8,000 artworks. National Gallery Singapore aims to provide an understanding and appreciation of art and culture through a variety of media, focusing on Singapore's culture and heritage and its relationship with other Southeast Asian cultures, Asia, and the world.

Long exposure photography can create dynamic, and sometimes, surreal images full of motion. Whether there is a sense of tranquility, apprehension with regard to the unexpected, or an element of surprise, night images can also evoke a true sense of emotion.

Photographers who specialize in night photography are indeed a special breed. This should not be so surprising when one realizes how much in-depth understanding of light is necessary to capture that perfect photograph. Additionally, there are some rather basic tips any newbie night photographer should know. This, and more, will be covered in this edition of “After Hours Photography,” with a few night photography exercises tossed in to allow you to practice that which is covered. After all, practice - and I do mean a lot of it - will enable you to create magical night imagery!

First thing first, and that is - Know Your Camera! Whether shooting landscapes, or urban settings, trundle through the darkness not only looking for the perfect scene, but experimenting along the way. A thorough understanding of your camera, and what all of the buttons do, is essential for night photography. The last thing you will want, with little light with which to work, is to fumble with your camera and its controls. Not knowing can only make for stressful, difficult photography.

** Take a moment, and have a look at your camera controls. Pay close attention to the Mode Dial. This is where you will set how you will photograph.

Understanding and acknowledging its existence is the pathway to Light

Remaining in Ignorance enables it

It is dark, it is ugly – it is vile

It is the devil’s playground

It is seductive

Only through shining a light on its existence . . .

Can humanity and our earth heal

Humanity is on the precipice

Let’s pray - Amen

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

A PRAYER TO DEFEAT THE WORK OF SATAN

O Divine Eternal Father, in union with your Divine Son and the Holy Spirit, and through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg You to destroy the Power of your greatest enemy – the evil spirits. Cast them into the deepest recesses of hell and chain them there forever!

Take possession of your Kingdom which You have created and which is rightfully yours. Heavenly Father, give us the reign of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I repeat this prayer out of pure love for You with every beat of my heart and with every breath I take.

Amen.

And now I tell you openly

You have my heart so don't hurt me

You're what I couldn't find

A totally amazing mind

So understanding and so kind

You're everything to me

In every possible way

And oh my dreams

It's never quite as it seems

'Cause you're a dream to me

[Listen]

I hear him, before I go to sleep

And focus on the day that's been

I realise he's there

When I turn the light off and turn over

Nobody knows about my man

They think he's lost on some horizon

And suddenly I find myself

Listening to a man I've never known before

Telling me about the sea

All his love is 'til eternity

Ooh, he's here again

The man with the child in his eyes

Ooh, he's here again

The man with the child in his eyes

He's very understanding

And he's so aware of all my situations

When I stay up late

He's always waiting, but I feel him hesitate

Oh, I'm so worried about my love

They say, "No, no, it won't last forever!"

And here I am again, my girl

Wondering what on Earth I'm doing here

Maybe he doesn't love me

I just took a trip on my love for him

Ooh, he's here again

The man with the child in his eyes

Ooh, he's here again

The man with the child in his eyes

Common Fruit Fly (Drosophila melanogaster)

Have a fab FriYay and a super weekend everyone.

Though it sounds a pest fly it is valuable in cancer research as an understanding and cure are sought.

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is used as a model organism to study disciplines ranging from fundamental genetics to the development of tissues and organs. Drosophila genome is 60% homologous to that of humans, less redundant, and about 75% of the genes responsible for human diseases have homologs in flies (Ugur et al., 2016). These features, together with a brief generation time, low maintenance costs, and the availability of powerful genetic tools, allow the fruit fly to be eligible to study complex pathways relevant in biomedical research, including cancer.

Happy Fly Day Friday!

I do feel like I need to explain myself on this, plus it's easy - I have nothing!

Have a great day! xoxo

You're chatting to me, like we connect

But I don't even know if we're still friends

It's so confusing,

Understanding you is making me not want to do

And things that I know I should do

But I trip fast and then I lose

And I hate looking like a fool

Always loved the lyrics especially:

Harmony and understanding

Sympathy and trust abounding

No more falsehoods or derisions

This handsome wild Stallion was taken in Utah. There are many bands of wild horses in the west. My understanding is that they arrived with the Spanish and became feral over time. They are a controversial subject in that the cattle farmers feel that they compete with the sometimes meager resources available in a lot of the BLM land and argue that they eat deeper into the roots of the vegetation. My horse whisperer friends deny that and make the strong case that the where the horses have roamed for years the vegetation has remained unchanged. Water sources are often provided by the hand of man and I'm not sure how well the horses would do without our aid. In Dugway, where this image was taken, the herds have been culled due to lack of resources. Similarly, in Nevada, herd culling is always underway and the controversies and arguments there are never ending. Nevada uses prisoners to capture and break the horses for eventual resale, I hope. I think if I were serving time I'd volunteer for that job. My take is that many of these states are failing to realize the potential tourist dollars that could be earned by attracting more outdoor photographers to wild horse country. Not that I'm complaining!

I'm very busy and will soon start to comment your photos. Thank you very much for your understanding .

Europe, Spain, Valencia, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe, Saurus skeleton

Let’s return to delightful Valencia and the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.

As you probably know, the architecture of Santiago Calatrava is based on biomorphic shapes, skeletal structures are his thing. Whereas the Estação de Oriente is based on a whale, the ‘Turning torso’ in Malmö (Sweden) on a man, the morphology of the Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe seems to be based on creatures of the Jurassic era.

The Museo is a wonderful science, biology and environment museum. Full interactivity is one of its features, the motto of which is “Forbidden not to touch, not to feel, not to think”.

And indeed, visiting is an engaging delight. It’s located in "The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, a cultural and architectural quarter which formed one of the reason why we at last visited Valencia (the other reason was the spectacular ‘Fallas’). It's near the old riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957, and turned into a lovely park. The Ciutat’ is also designed by Santiago Calatrava (and Félix Candela) and opened in April, 1998.

True to the legacy of the star architect/engineer, it costed nearly three times the initially expected cost of €300 million and almost bankrupted the region.

Inside the Museo is the skeleton of a family member of the dinosaur and the relation between it keleton and Calatrava’s architecture is probably immediately obvious.

This is number 278 of Museum.

Whitsand Bay is situated in South East Cornwall. It runs from Rame Head in the east, to Portwrinkle in the west. It is characterised by sheer, high cliffs and dramatic scenery. At low tide an expanse of sand approaching 4 miles in length, where several smaller coves and beaches join up, is revealed. The South West Coast Path runs the length of the bay.

The beach is fairly exposed and there are often surfable waves. However, it has a reputation for strong rip currents which makes swimming potentially treacherous. The shifting sandbanks and sandbars at Whitsand Bay, are a primary cause of this. The bay tends to develop sandbars particularly around mid-to-low tide. These sandbars create channels where water, pushed in by waves, returns to the sea, forming powerful, narrow rip currents. Dangerous rips can be found particularly around Tregonhawke and Tregantle beaches. RNLI lifeguards patrol designated sections, but not all areas, during summer. At other times there is no cover at all, making it crucial to be aware of the hazards. The area also attracts divers who come to dive the HMS Scylla, an ex-naval frigate sunk in 2004 to create an artificial reef.

Taken on a particularly low tide, this image looks east from Sharrow Point towards Rame Head. The chalets clinging to the cliff are above Freathy and Tregonhawke beaches, and the white coastguards’ cottages, further along, are above Polhawn Cove. The spire of Rame Church can just be seen on the horizon, and the white National Coastguard Institute station sits on Rame Head, just inland from the ancient chapel of St. Michael.
