Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday

"How could rocks and sand and silence make us afraid and yet be so wonderful?”

- Edna Brush Perkins, The White Heart of Mojave, 1922

Finally visited Death Valley over the holidays, and, as always when visiting a new-to-me National Park, I left a little piece of my soul, there. Death Valley is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I thought I was prepared. I thought it would be similar to other long awaited first visits to other national parks where the experience feels familiar and welcoming, as if you are stepping into a book that you’ve read for a very long time. Death Valley did not do this to me. No book can prepare you for Death Valley. The only way to become acquainted with the inconceivable vastness of the valley and sand and salt that’s only defined by towering walls of stony mountains is to be immersed in it. Death Valley is a challenge. It is a challenge to understand and experience and exist in. To be here is to be immersed in a forbidding environment and accept that this miraculous landscape is not for the faint of heart. I’ll be back, Death Valley. We have more work to do.

For all users not able of understanding German I´m sorry that I have just my little poem for you, as I´m not eloquent enough in expressing my thoughts as accurate in English as I can in German, at least concerning this shot.

'Peace through Understanding', the theme of the World's Fair in 1964-1965. And yes, it is still quite appropriate at the current situation here.

The Unisphere is a spherical stainless steel representation of the Earth, located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in the borough of Queens, New York City. The sphere, which measures 140 feet (43 m) high and 120 feet (37 m) in diameter, was commissioned as part of the 1964 New York World's Fair. The Unisphere is one of the borough's most iconic and enduring symbols.

Commissioned to celebrate the beginning of the space age, the Unisphere was conceived and constructed as the theme symbol of the 1964–1965 New York World's Fair. The theme of the World's Fair was "Peace Through Understanding" and the Unisphere represented the theme of global interdependence. It was dedicated to "Man's Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe".

"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is a 1974 song written by English singer/songwriter Nick Lowe. Initially released by Lowe in 1974, the song did not chart. The song was most famously covered by Elvis Costello & the Attractions and released as a B-side to Lowe's 1978 solo single "American Squirm." The cover saw great popularity and was later included on the American version of Costello's 1979 album Armed Forces. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/(What%27s_So_Funny_%27Bout)_Peace,_Love,_and_Understanding

There is no doubt that once you know the story behind a photo that there is a better understanding of its contents. The big challenge to photographers is to be able to tell the story with only the image. The other thing is that it is not really necessary to feel the same emotion the photographer has, but rather that a response is made that triggers off a connection to something in the viewers life or reveals information that is new to him. --

Introduction

Almighty God says, "The so-called God is not only the Holy Spirit, that Spirit, the sevenfold intensified Spirit, the all-encompassing Spirit, but also a person, an ordinary person, an exceptionally common person. He is not only male, but also female. They are similar in that They are both born to humans, and dissimilar in that one is conceived by the Holy Spirit and the other is born to a human but derived directly from the Spirit. They are similar in that both incarnate fleshes of God carry out God the Father’s work, and dissimilar in that one does the work of redemption and the other does the work of conquering. Both represent God the Father, but one is the Lord of redemption filled with lovingkindness and mercy, and the other is the God of righteousness filled with wrath and judgment. One is the Supreme Commander to launch the redemption work, and the other is the righteous God to accomplish the work of conquering. One is the Beginning, the other the End. One is sinless flesh, the other is flesh that completes the redemption, continues the work, and is never of sin. Both are the same Spirit, but They dwell in different fleshes and are born in different places. And They are separated by several thousand years. Yet all Their work is mutually complementary, never conflictual, and can be spoken of in the same breath. Both are people, but one is a baby boy and the other is an infant girl."

Drawing on information from the excavation and stylistic comparisons, the pavement has been dated to the first half or middle of the 2nd century AD. A deeper examination of the pavement during its lifting and restoration allowed for an understanding of the construction techniques and the successive phases of installation of its different segments. While the ensemble was realised in situ, in opus tessellatum, the circular medallion, created in opus vermiculatum using miniscule elements, was composed within a workshop upon a terracotta base (the emblema technique) and then inserted into a space left empty in the centre of the shield. The border decorated with a guilloche was added at a third stage in order to camouflage the join between the shield and the emblema. By identifying the material used for the medallion and the guilloche, we can say that the creation of the panel and its insertion were carried out by the same team.

A photographer on flickr took a photo that inspired me to visit this place a couple decades ago. Revisiting this place over the years with skills I've acquired, it's fascinating to see how my impression and interpretation of this place changes.

In some sense it's unchanged, but over the years i've changed. Changed with a refreshed sense of understanding that's hopefully more deeper and profound.

In a photographer's sense, taking a more mindful sense of what's present and being intentional in lines, tones, and color.

I took one shot digitally and another couple shots with film. Still need to finish the roll of film, but I hope you enjoy this interpretation (however cliche photographing icons like this space is).

The first major retrospective after the death of the artist Jörg Immendorff, who died in 2007, ran until January 27 at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. The central work of this successful exhibition was the monumental sculpture “Near the Brandenburg Gate – World Question”, on loan from the Ludwig Forum for International Art. Today, the 4.5 ton work has come “home” and is now on permanent display in the lobby of the Ludwig Forum. Since the opening of the Ludwig Forum for International Art Aachen, the large bronze sculpture by Jörg Immendorff has represented the new museum's understanding of art: the work “Near the Brandenburg Gate - Question of the World” was exhibited at documenta 7 in 1982 and was later purchased from the Aachen collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig

Jörg Immendorff's monumental work “Near the Brandenburg Gate - World Question” has three levels of meaning: it is a symbolically visualized interface of global political power blocs, a historical memorial and a expression of the artist's personal history.

~~~~~ Peace and Joy ~~~~~
How do plants know which way is up? This might seem like an obvious question, but how exactly does a plant know which way to grow its roots and which way to grow towards the Sun?
Understanding the deeper mechanisms that cause a plant to grow in a particular direction has far-reaching possibilities for agriculture – as well as for astronauts who want to enjoy fresh vegetables on a long space mission.
This image shows a lentil seedling root that grew on the International Space Station before being preserved in resin and cut along its length for analysis.
The purple dots are starch-filled statoliths that usually drop towards gravity, but this plant grew in space and the statoliths are floating in the middle of their cells.
In addition to these cross-sections, almost 2500 pictures charted the 768 seeds growing over 31 hours in microgravity and hypergravity in the European Modular Cultivation System on ESA’s Columbus space laboratory.
“This research could not be done on Earth because gravity would get in the way of our readings,” explains Francois Bizet, who is analysing the images as part of a post-doctoral programme in France’s CNES space agency. Regular updates are posted on the experiment's blog.
The results from the Gravi-2 experiment are showing what could be responsible for sending growth-direction signals to the plant’s cells. Gravi-2 continued an earlier experiment that examined the limits of how plants perceive gravity, with this second experiment looking in particular at how calcium is used by plants to regulate growth.
On Earth, soluble calcium spreads to plant roots and is considered an important part of plant growth because they respond to environmental signals. Gravi-2 will also look at gene expression to highlight how intracellular calcium could be a second messenger for perceiving gravity.
“We need to grow the seeds in different environments to compare results and work out which change is due to gravity,” says Valérie Legué from the Université Blaise Pascal in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
“Understanding plant growth is the first step to adapting crops for more productive agriculture. If we could grow lentils vertically, for example, farmers could drastically increase crop yield per square metre.”
Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a great start to your weekend. Today I will be sharing the first set of photos of a custom build & interior design project that we have completed for our longtime friend and repeat client, Janessa. For this project, Janessa requested that we design and build, from the ground up, the spa located within her brand new Singaporean themed resort. Over the last couple of years, we’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Janessa to design her personal homes, corporate office spaces & resorts. This has given both Rooky & I, as well as Janessa, a keen sense of each other's aesthetics, as well as a solid understanding of how each other’s brains work, when it comes to completing a project. As a result of this, Janessa has placed her trust in us to execute her vision seamlessly, while delivering a product that is visually appealing to her guests, while also being functionally available for their use. The end result is a structure and spaces, which we have designed and built from scratch, that is completely unique to the resort.
In an effort to not discuss and show off too much of the resort, so all future guests have a surprise factor when visiting for their first time, I will only be highlighting a small number of details in the body of each post, as well as showcasing a small and select set of photos of this project over the next couple of weeks or so.
In the first photo, you are getting a peak into the shower area of the spa. To offset the black metal window frames, black concrete ceiling & other black architectural elements throughout, we created all interior walls and door frames in a beautiful oak, which has just a dash of warmth too it, helping alleviate the coldness that a space like this can have. For the privacy of the spa guests, we added shutters to the exterior windows. We customized the shutters by cladding them in the same wood used in the interiors of the spa, helping add another element of warmth into the space. For the flooring, none of you will be surprised to see that we created a custom mesh floor, which has become somewhat standard at TDF. The flooring is made up of an oak border, grey marble trim inlay, and a multi toned marble tile in a hexagonal shape. For the shower stalls, the walls and flooring are also custom, created with a black marble border, grey marble trim inlay, and a multi toned marble tile in a hexagonal shape.
In the second photo, you are getting a view into the change room area of the spa. Similar to the design language in the first photo, we’ve stuck with oak walls and trim to add warmth to the space, while continuing with the same style of mesh flooring.
As I say in all of my posts, thank you all for the continued support that is shown to our small team here at The Design Firm. It means an absolute ton to us <3
Lastly, I always recommend viewing my photos in full screen mode when able! This allows you to see the true depth and detail of the spaces that my colleagues and I create for our clients.
A new understanding of Mars is beginning to emerge, thanks to the first year of NASA's InSight lander mission. Findings described in a set of six papers published Feb. 24 reveal a planet alive with quakes, dust devils and strange magnetic pulses.
Brad Zavodsky is the mission manager for InSight as part of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Planetary Missions Program Office. Marshall’s chief scientist, Renee Weber, is a co-investigator on the mission and has been part of InSight since its inception in 2010.
InSight is the first mission dedicated to looking deep beneath the Martian surface. The two largest quakes detected by NASA's InSight appear to have originated in a region of Mars called Cerberus Fossae. Scientists previously spotted signs of tectonic activity here, including landslides. This image was taken by the HiRISE camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter.
Listening to the stories of others and putting yourself in their shoes can go such a long way toward greater understanding and being better equipped for whatever lies before you. It is amazing how different a scenario can look when you have a perspective-shift and begin to view the world through the eyes of another.
California Dreaming
.
I have been very fortunate to photograph Burrowing Owls in several states, which have included California on that list. Understanding the habitat of these owls has allowed me to be more successful in locating them and shooting them. Here I was striving for something different. When I saw the owl perched and watching the ground intently, I knew he was on the hunt. The sun was rising quickly so I only had so much time to change my position and settle in waiting on the kill. I had dreamed of this shot, figuring the backlit owl would add additional drama. And just like that, it all happened, he pounced, grabbed his prey and flew off to deliver to his mate nearby.
Did you know that Burrowing Owls prefer burrows dug by prairie dogs, ground squirrels, badgers, marmots, skunks, armadillos, kangaroo rats, and tortoises. But in Florida and the Caribbean, they usually excavate their own burrows.
