Excerpt from Wikipedia:

Located in West Bay , it was originally planned to be unveiled on June 10, 1993, on Portugal Day, Jamez Day and Portuguese Overseas Chinese Day . Due to Portuguese President Suarez’s visit to Australia at the end of the year, the opening ceremony was postponed to October 29 and Suarez presided over the ribbon cutting. The designer of Ronghemen is the Portuguese sculpture artist João Charters de Almeida (1935-). It was constructed by Portuguese-owned Deli Construction Company. The total project cost was more than 28 million patacas. The construction started in February 1993 and was completed in September. It is made up of four 40-meter-high two sets of pillars interlocking each other. It is a steel frame, concrete is poured, and the pillar surface is covered with black granite. There are benches for visitors to rest under. There are also spotlights around to illuminate the entire building at night.

The Ronghe Gate is 60 meters away from the sea on the bank of the Xiwan embankment. It is connected to the land by a walkway, and it is decorated with black and white Portuguese gravel with the Chinese and Portuguese name of the Ronghe Gate . The design of this sculpture is abstract, including heaven, earth, water, and power, expressing peace and love. Some people think that the Harmony Gate looks like the palms of the palms to symbolize the friendship between China and Portugal.

At present, the Ronghe Gate is abandoned due to the peeling of the outer wall, and the bridge leading to the Ronghe Gate is also full of rubbish and many weeds.

Based on the information collected during my ethnographic work focusing my attention on the everyday understandings of dengue fever, and paying particular attention to the different ways in which the subjects that have had dengue described the experience of being unwell, I decided to re-work (collaboratively) all the information gathered so far, to create elements that reflect the ideas of how dengue fever is understood in various different contexts.

Promoters of public health have not taken into consideration the points of view of the patients or those who have had the disease. They design campaigns based on an entomological and clinical point of view, following a standard template where you see health staff –dressed in laboratory coats– talking about environmental hygiene and the purposes of sanitation. In addition, humour doesn’t play a role in the design of the campaigns.

In order to collaboratively create an intervention that reproduces the way Luis Fernando and Sara experienced the disease (you can find information about the ways in which they described the experience of being unwell by accessing my PhD blog: www.anthropologyartscience.blogspot.com), we asked Alejandro Uribe, Sarita Álvarez and Juan Camilo Ortega for their help. They are part of Bimana, a collective of artist that creates a variety of large-scale interventions and performances combining a solar balloon, plastic bags, kites, makeup, prosthetics design, and special effects. The idea was to create a fictional character, or a comic anti-hero, that would appear in the public space of the city, creating an active dialogue with different peoples.

Acknowledgments:

I am extremely grateful with the subjects of this ethnography Sara and Luis Fernando. Special thanks to the ‘Bimana Producciones’ team (Alejandro Uribe, Sarita Álvarez and Juan Camilo Ortega), the kite-flyer Andrés Ramírez and the actor Emilio Arango. I would also like to thank the rest of the people that helped during the public experiment: Pablo López, Lucía Tobón, Sara Ibarra, Susana Valencia, Hernán Marín, Mario Valencia, and Gustavo Ramírez.

I shot a wedding last month and the groom's father was a well-weathered, hard-fought man. I took numerous photos of him.

At the end of it he heartily copmlimented me, my demeanor and focus. He said, especially, that I shot the whole thing in a black suit in 80 degree weather was not so freuently seen these days.

You can say I liked him.

Why do weeds keep growing again and again despite frequent weeding? This question is relevant to gardeners, but also to researchers in ecology. Indeed, weeds are an often-neglected source of biodiversity. In a joint project with the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), we develop models to uncover how weeds can survive at the city scale despite the action of gardeners. To do so, we investigate plant dynamics in urban tree bases along streets. These tree bases can act as “highways” (or ecological corridors) for plant species, connecting parks and gardens. We aim to understand which plant species are effectively able to spread through urban tree bases. Our results will have consequences for the management of tree bases by gardeners: they will highlight new weeding strategies which are more efficient against undesirable species while promoting biodiversity.

Surviving cancer and using art as a tool for healing, reflection and understanding has infused my art with a sense of energy and optimism that has a universal appeal. The process of making the art as well as the meaning of it, are both an integral part of the end result and for me there is always a battle to harmonize between the two – to evoke the emotion of the piece and to empower the viewer.

I love combining traditional and new media painting techniques where one feeds off the energy of the other. The visual collaboration of both medias often celebrates a bold expressionism and optimistic edge regardless of subject matter.

My work has evolved from a mashing of referenced pop art and iconic imagery into elaborate multilayered portraits and scenes that depict a more personal interpretation of my life experience, battles and passions. My goal is to lead the observer to dramatic action, putting them on the edge between what we know and what is unknowable. I’ve learned that something new will always come about when you push hard enough and the result is the revelation of a “new identity”.

The motivation for me to keep going is to gain an understanding of how this “new identity or rebirth or truth” actually reflects my life as well as the world we live in – or not.

I did take pictures of live people on April 4 as well as the monuments of those who are no longer among the living.

After spending the morning in Highgate, I decided to take another London Walks tour in the afternoon. This one was their British Museum walk. I can't say I recommend it since the guide was very stodgy and dry but she did show the highlights I probably wouldn't have found on my own.

This is one example - the Rosetta Stone.

Well I shouldn't say it's the Rosetta Stone so much as the Rosetta Stone through glass. But since I couldn't get to the front of it, I did the next best thing. I shot the reflections on the Rosetta Stone in a sort of candid.

This look is pretty typical of those I saw of people walking away from the stone.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 16 June 2017, to continue support of the scholarship programme.

The donation was made by H.E. Henry H. Rao, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Rwanda, and accepted by Ms. Sandrine Umutoni, Director General of Imbuto Foundation.

The Chinese Embassy greatly supports the development of education in Rwanda and strives to do this through helping disadvantaged students under Imbuto Foundation’s scholarship programme – Edified Generation.

Imbuto Foundation and the Chinese Embassy have signed MoUs in support of the scholarship programme since 2013.

This sign at a basic school pretty much says it all. After spending eleven months teaching I have a posthumous understanding how much teachers do build their pupils future. Well there are lots of cultural and home things too, but teachers play a bigger part than I ever imagined.

I also know now why my grade 11 English teacher, fresh from college, cried and left the room when all her pupils demonstrated zero interest in reading what ever it was we were supposed to be reading. I will admit I was not the best teacher, and teaching is not my gift. I once told my pupils whom were struggling to understand that the area of a right triangle is half, this was after spending weeks on fractions, of a rectangle to just make their maize fields rectangles so they wouldn't have to worry about not understanding triangles. If you think that's mean, don't worry most my pupils don't speak English so they weren't offended and those that do speak English thought it was funny, probably because those, about eight, that speak English also understood what I've taught them and knew I wasn't talking to them. I enjoyed the experience of teaching but have no desire to try and convince any pupils anywhere to learn anything again, maybe engineering is for me?
