Mouth of Columbia River, south jetty

Just as bridges provide safe passage over rivers, gorges or other depressions, jetties built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers help ocean-going vessels move between coastal rivers and the Pacific Ocean. Simply put, jetties are rock fingers which stretch out into the ocean from the beaches, essentially extending the mouths of the rivers well into the sea.

Jetties were never intended to be used for recreational purposes. Powerful waves remove or shift even the largest boulders from the jetties, while underwater currents penetrate the structure, and remove smaller rocks and sand from inside the jetty, creating unique dangers. Some dangers are apparent, such as slippery rock surfaces and strong waves overtopping the structure. Other dangers are hidden and include open crevasses, sinkholes and caverns that are caused by the ocean eroding away stones and sand just below the surface of the jetty.

Tony Donahue knew he needed to do something to spruce up his store, but he didn’t even know where to start. He had always operated with the understanding that he knew where to find everything in his disorganized store, and it didn’t matter if his customers couldn’t find products because that’s where his helpful service came in.

Donahue, who owns Jefferson Barns & Lumber in Sumter, S.C., sees his retail business in a new light now, after some persuasive advice from House Hasson Wholesale Hardware representatives. His store recently underwent a complete remodel and remerchandising, which has dramatically improved the store’s look while making it more appealing to pro and homeowner customers.

House Hasson Wholesale Hardware handled every aspect of the reset, coming up with a detailed assortment plan that had a place for everything and everything in its place. A 5,000-square-foot salesfloor that had once been home to controlled chaos is now organized neatly by product category.

“Our store now has a constant theme throughout: We are here to better serve you, our customers. Departments are distinguished, categories are merchandised together and we are better priced than ever before,” Donahue says.

As his House Hasson Wholesale Hardware sales rep, Bill Barnette, explains, “Tony had been doing business with Monroe Hardware for over 20 years. As the demographics of Sumter changed, Jefferson Barns had to change to meet the demands of its contractors and regular customers. With several lumber, building material and hardware retailers closing, the demand grew. Tony knew he needed professional help to position his store for the anticipated growth.”

J. Aldridge had started calling on the store when he was with Monroe Hardware, and he carried over that relationship when he joined House Hasson Wholesale Hardware. “He got me converted,” Donahue explains. “Now whatever House-Hasson says, I do. They have helped turn my company around to be the best retailer in the area.”

Barnette got House Hasson Wholesale Hardware’s marketing and store planning team involved, and shortly after the store layout was finalized House Hasson Wholesale Hardware’s store set-up crew arrived. “They stayed for six weeks and did an amazing job,” Donahue says. “I’m very pleased with the work they did.”

The floors were redone and spiffed up, the three-acre yard was cleaned up and a paint room was created. “We’ve started to build up our paint business since we added Valspar paint,” Donahue points out.

Since then Barnette has been working with the retailer on gross margins, pricing levels and endcap promotions to help better market the store’s new offerings. “I get great service from Bill. He gives me lots of useful advice,” Donahue says.

The slow economy had caused several other local home improvement retailers to shut down, so Donahue took advantage and hired key salespeople such as Steve Watts. “He’s brought in big contractors and helped us triple our business.”

Helping out was the fact an army base was relocated to Sumter, which has made a big difference in the economy and housing market. “Houses are selling good. We’ve been lucky here and our business has been great,” says Donahue, who adds that sales are split evenly between hardware and LBM products.

He has been in business since the age of 19 in 1982, starting out with storage barns and then gradually expanding first into lumber and then finally hardware. As the name implies, Jefferson Barns still manufactures storage barns to specification, and the company also sells a selection of carpet, flooring and paneling. It employs 12 full-time and three part-time employees.

Donahue’s daughter, Crystal, works the salesfloor, while another daughter, Amanda Lewis, handles the bookkeeping and back-office tasks. His girlfriend, Amy Quick, also works the salesfloor, which is seeing more homeowner and contractor customers these days.

“House-Hasson’s great pricing has made a real difference. It’s boosted my margins and my walk-in trade has been better since the remodel. Customers can tell the difference,” Donahue says.

House-Hasson’s next dealer market is scheduled for January 5-7 at the Opryland Hotel, Nashville, Tenn.

In its 105th year of operation, House-Hasson Wholesale Hardware serves 17 states, the Caribbean basin, and several other foreign countries. The company is approaching $200 million in annual sales.

Where is that fine line,

This is a screen capture of the edit software I use to 'detail' the world I want to 'demonstrate

as visual evidence of some inner search for the meaning of the tao.

Where a pixl becomes a focus,

And the image looses the honor of the photograph, but moves out of illustration because no artist held a brush?

For me it's about trying to find meaning in the visual world, about detecting what Rupert Sheldrake called 'morphic resonance' the evolving sha ping of time space.

Lam Yu'arafu Bi-Iqranihi. It basically means "Recite the Quran only with understanding". True understanding has to do with obedience to Allah, and would not refer to understanding the literal Arabic.

This phrase is easier written in a landscape format because "Iqranihi" shouldn't be split up, and the website where I saw it had it in a pretty (and easily copied) horizontal form.

I finally got things to fit in portrait mode by making "bi-Iqranihii" nto the shape of fruit, implying the sweetness of understanding and to show that the harvest that comes with understanding is plentiful.

I wasn't sure if the characters can be coloured in this way but O said it was OK. Our landlord couldn't read the fruit though :)

As of August 2009 I have realised that people may do the design first in pencil and then go over it in ink. This is not surprising - that was how we were taught in art class for Western calligraphy, because you don't know how much space you will need otherwise.

This was done without any pencil preparation, and I don't draw lines to help me keep the text straight (it seems to be fairly straight anyway). The most challenging bit is to try to get the characters split up across lines in a logical way, since I don't know enough Arabic to be sure of what I'm doing, and transliterations on the Internet often run several words together.

It's been a challenge trying to fit everything properly into a sheet of paper but I don't have much of a choice - the inks seem to smudge if I try going over them with an eraser. Minor mistakes can be fixed with Microsoft Office Picture Manager and Microsoft Paint (I don't have Photoshop), but with major mistakes I just start over with a fresh sheet of paper.

Halle: I had no understanding of what diabetes was. I instantly thought I was going to die, because I heard, "disease" and "okay, after disease there must be death." And I got a very quick education about what diabetes was, and I realize that I probably had it for most of my childhood, but when you're diabetic, nothing hurts.

James Lipton: Is this Type 1?

Halle: It is really Type 1, but classified now as Type 2 because I'm no longer insulin dependent. I was for awhile, and I've managed to wean myself off of insulin, so now I like to put myself in the Type 2 category.

James Lipton: You control it with diet and with exercise?

Halle: Yes.

(There's no way she ever had Type 1 if she stopped taking insulin, and this is a spokesperson for diabetes! She may have "Type 1b," which is not the same thing as Type 1, but it sounds like she doesn't know it.)

Spread of Corona Virus How COVID-19 Spreads ? Current understanding about how the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses. Person-to-person spread The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) Via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. When does spread happen? People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. How efficiently does the virus spread? How easily a virus spreads from person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (like measles), while other viruses are less so. Another factor is whether the spread continues over multiple generations of people (if spread is sustained). The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in Hubei province and other parts of China. In the United States, spread from person-to-person has occurred only among a few close contacts and has not spread any further to date. ift.tt/3aThMi2 / CC BY-SA (ift.tt/1rWN0uR) If you like our videos please do not forget to like, comment, subscribe to the channel. “Morning without you is a dwindled dawn.”

― Emily Dickinson

Lahore – July 24, 2019: U.S. Consul General Colleen Crenwelge today witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Power Information Technology Company (PITC) and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The memorandum marks the start of a partnership for research and development on smart grid technologies designed to improve energy use.

“Advanced technologies are making electricity more affordable, reliable, and sustainable,” Consul General Crenwelge said. “We are proud to work with Pakistan as it builds technological capacity and improves the energy sector, and we hope to see growing private sector participation and investment in this endeavor.”

Utilizing the Smart Grid IT Laboratory established at PITC with U.S. government support, LUMS and PITC will test smart grid technologies and showcase their benefits to distribution and transmission companies. This will provide opportunities for LUMS researchers to exchange information on new developments with the Pakistani government.

“Partnering with LUMS will stimulate research and development collaboration between the Pakistani government and local universities while enhancing local learning and technology transfer,” said Managing Director PEPCO Waseem Mukhtar.

Acting LUMS Vice Chancellor Shahid Masud said, “The Smart Grid IT Laboratory will help us achieve the university’s mission of effectively addressing power sector needs and contributing directly to Pakistan’s economic development.”

The signing ceremony was organized by the Sustainable Energy for Pakistan Project, a four-year United States Agency for International Development (USAID) technical assistance initiative to support the Pakistani government’s efforts to deliver financially sustainable energy services. USAID provides technical and financial assistance to Pakistan’s 10 government-owned electricity distribution companies to help them reduce losses, streamline business processes, and improve financial viability.

LUMS is a world-class academic institution with a proud history of achievement and ambitious plans for the future. Since its inception in 1985, LUMS has strived to achieve the aim of imparting world-class education while encouraging research and intellectual growth in the country. The university has five schools, namely, Suleman Dawood School of Business, Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, and Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law and School of Education.

Keurig announced at the end of 2014 that they were recalling almost 7.2 million of their MINI Plus Brewing Systems. These machines were reported for causing burn injuries (some very severe) to the face and extremities. There were a total of 6.6 million machines in the United States and over 500,000 in Canada recalled by the company in December. The recall was issued after Keurig received over 200 reports of liquid leaving the machine and causing severe burns. So far there are over 90 burn injuries reported.

My understanding is that is now known as Broadstone Plaza or the Broadstone Gate and the original plan is described below:

"The Broadstone Gate will provide a key access to the Grangegorman site once complete and is being developed as part of the Luas Cross City works. It will be finished as a public plaza and the access will provide a major linkage between Grangegorman and Dublin city."

"The plaza is situated off Constitution Hill on the site of the old royal canal at the former Great Weatern Railway Station commonly known as Broadstone, and will mark a prominent entrance to the Grangegorman urban quarter."

"Under the Grangegorman Masterplan, the primary urban path through Grangegorman – St Brendan’s Way will link with the Broadstone Gate which when completed will reach as far as Prussia Street. The link with Broadstone can also be seen as an extension to the 18th century historic spine of Dublin City which covered Dublin Castle across Grattan Bridge, along Capel Street/Bolton Street, Henrietta Street and King’s Inn."

The new pedestrian/cyclist link between Grangegorman and Constitution Hill was officially opened in November. This link in its current format is temporary until site development in that area is completed. The initial opening hours for the link are Monday – Friday, from 7am – 4pm and on Saturdays, from 7.30am – 2pm. I have been advised by the Grangegorman Development Agency that it intends to expand these opening hours soon.

As you can see from my photographs the Plaza Area is currently a building site but I am hoping that it will be complete within a few months.

Artificial intelligence versus natural intelligence – what are the differences and what do they have in common? How do machines “think,” how do they learn, and what distinguishes us humans from machines? Artificial intelligence in all its complexity is a central focus of the new Ars Electronica Center; after all, this technology is setting off a revolution that will affect our lives in ways that cannot be overestimated. Our goal with the exhibition “Understanding Artificial Intelligence” is to make our visitors “AI savvy” and give them all a basic idea of what artificial intelligence is, how it is already being applied, and what it can already do. The exhibition shows how neural networks are constructed and even offers visitors an opportunity to train them at a number of interactive stations.
