On October 1, 2011, John Carlos and Dave Zirin launched the book, The John Carlos Story, at Busboys and Poets in an event hosted by Teaching for Change, Edge of Sports, and Haymarket Press. There was a standing room only crowd for this special event. The program started with the book trailer featuring the 1968 Olympic salute by Carlos and Tommie Smith and an interview with them shortly after their historic stand. It caused a swell of applause and probably a few teary eyes. Zirin gave a rousing opening talk that connected Carlos' political stance in 1968 to that historical period and to contemporary struggles for justice including honoring the life of Troy Davis. Carlos talked about his life, family, and philosophy, answered questions, and signed over 120 books.More info on book: zinnedproject.org/posts/11445

Tenuous Link: clean, shiny, REFLECTION
In the last few days I found myself driving at two opposite ends of California: the southeastern Mojave desert and the northern volcanic chain of the Cascades. The contrast is sharp, I still had the hot, desert landscape of Death Valley in mind, two nights spent camping in the middle of nowhere, when I was on the road again headed north, through the Cascades and into Oregon. So here is a visual representation of that contrast.
The top picture shows a small playa lake (a desiccation lake that forms in the desert when all precipitation water is evaporated from the area where it collected), in the Emigrant Pass area of Death Valley National Park (Inyo county). The picture at the bottom shows the majestic building of Mount Shasta (Siskiyou county), a volcano in the Cascades of the northwestern United States. Geology, geography, biota, and landscape in general (including human landscape) are pretty different, but it is still the state of California.

Motion blur on a model railroad can be a fascinating effect to work with, especially when there's more than one train moving. The operators on this HO scale layout slowed the trains a little as they passed, but nobody asked if I wanted to stop one of them.
