There are basically two types of people. People who accomplish things, and people who claim to have accomplished things. The first group is less crowded.

While many in the US are digging out from snow, here in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, we are wearing short sleeve shirts and enjoying things like what this picture shows. This was taken in Wickenburg, Arizona on February 13, 2015.
Saddleworth Moor is such a wild and beautiful place. The Moors Murders and countless newspaper articles have for years cast a dark shadow over it, portraying it as a bleak and barren nightmare. However, it is littered with history and folklore and has some of the most wonderful views.
This view is from near the summit of Alderman's Hill looking across Greenfield to Alphin Pike. Folklore tells the tale of two giants, Alphin and Alder who lived on their respective hills. Both sought the affections of Rimmon, a water nymph who lived in the waters of Chew Beck below. Rimmon chose Alphin, which infuriated Alder and the two giants fought, hurling rocks at each other until Alphin was struck and killed. In her grief, Rimmon cast herself from rocks into the valley below and joined Alphin in death.
There is a strong likelihood that this tale is the mythologisation of a Dark Ages battle that could well have taken place here, between the advancing Angles of Northumbria and the Celts of Southern Rheged. Anyone familiar with the tale of the battle of Win Hill, will remember that in c.626AD, the Northumbians defeated the Mercians by rolling boulders down the hillside. The Northumbians had taken Elmet (modern day West Yorkshire) in the early part of the 7th C and advanced on Rheged, which itself fell sometime before 730AD. There are a number of pointers in the landscape to this area being an ancient boarder and even the place names leave clues. Alder being of German origin, Al being a Celtic word for a rock or a hill.

When Red Rose Tea began to offer Wade figurines in 1967, it wasn't uncommon to promote food and beverage items with free premiums. Even so, the success of Red Rose Tea figurines was unprecedented, boasting a production run for the first series of ceramic figurines that numbered in the millions. The miniatures soon became a perennial item in boxes of Red Rose Tea. To date, it is estimated that more than 300 million Wade figurines have been given away in packages of Red Rose Tea in America. George Wade came into ownership of Wade & Sons of Burslem, England in 1899, eventually renaming it George Wade Pottery. The style of Wade figurines known as “Wade Whimsies” first appeared in the 1950s, and have been a regular promotion in Red Rose Tea in the United States since 1983.
I was just finishing a short hike in Homer, Alaska when I met this man enjoying what looked like a yummy cinnamon roll. He said that the Two Sisters Bakery just up the street had the best sticky buns he'd ever had. I like sticky buns so I definitely had to go there and yes their sticky buns were terrific. Were they the best I've ever had? I don't know but they were really good! I probably need to sample a few more before I can decide if they were the best so if you have any recommendations on sticky buns, let me know! Thanks in advance! Ha Ha!
I don't do portraits often, but I have a few from my last trip to Ethiopia that I like. I uploaded the first version - where the woman on the right is hiding her face - a while ago, but never got around to posting the one where she finally faced the camera. This was the fist time she had her picture taken (actually not just her, other women in this group too) and afterward we spent a long time looking at all the pictures on camera screen, zooming in and out and in again. And they laughed a lot. I wish I could print it right there and leave with them, but it was not an option.
The first version is in the comments.

Late in the morning, a year ago, I and my Nikon headed for Michigan's Portland. We had a specific photo in mind; we wanted to photograph the remnant of a millrace that used to supply power to--something. I really don't know Portland's history that well.
Nonetheless, the camera found a usable photo, though not exactly the one we'd planned. I posted that later in the day. The pic shows a hole that age and water had worn in the millrace wall. Things get old.
The camera and I then made today's photo, which was taken just a few feet north of the other. This image shows some trees and lawn at Two Rivers Park.
==========
The trips to and from Portland were via dirt roads. In both directions I found photos on Tupper Lake Road.

Other photos taken on 10/9/2024: On my way out of town I discovered Mulliken's Main Street was blocked by a cement truck; they were working on repairs to the King Kone sewer failure. I took one photograph, for some reason using my phone instead of my Nikon 1. Then I detoured on Railroad and North Streets, and continued on my way.
Neither E8A locomotives or steam locomotives are common sights on the railroads anymore, but for one moment they shared the spotlight in Hubbard, Ohio, as the excursion train on the left passed the steamer on static display. I don't know the background or heritage of the steam engine.
