Fred Flintstone the punching bag stoically guards the room as Christmas turmoil begins to swirl around him

The little boy who received Fred for Christmas is barely visible at right as he stands next to his dad, who's seated in a chair--those are his legs protruding halfway into the room. An aunt (or maybe grandma) has come to the rescue and is holding the boy's baby sister as she starts screaming at the top of her lungs. Perhaps she's already grown tired of her new baby doll, who now sits forlornly all by herself.

Take a look at some happier snapshots showing the boy posing with Fred and the boy playing with his punching bag.

Two ladies and a fellow wearing a fancy dress Sheriff's hat enjoying themselves at a party in a middle-class home. A television set adorned with a bunch of carnations in a colourful vase, three bottles – one of which is Cinzano Vermouth – and two red armchairs can be seen in the typical early sixties interior. I purchased this lovely colour photograph from a Belgian online vendor.

This image, also taken from The Wandering Swordsman, showing an elderly teacher admonishing Wu for his lack of understanding about art might be seen as an acknowledgment by Wu of the words of Jin Shangyi who advised Wu that his true skills lay in Kung Fu, not in painting.

Handwritten caption: "Taken on our 10" television screen - June 24, 1948. Dewey nominated for pres."*

This snapshot of 1948 Republican presidential nominee Thomas Dewey and his wife is actually a photo of an image from the screen of a Philco 48-1001 television set tuned in to the broadcast of the 1948 Republican National Convention, which "was the first presidential convention to be shown on 'national' television". In 1948, according to Wikipedia, "there were 27 television stations in full operation in the US and an estimated 350,000 TV sets in the whole country."

For a better view of the televised image, see a cropped version of this photo.

*Although the handwritten caption below the photo gives the date as June 24, it's possible that it was a day later, on June 25, 1948.

Come with me

Into the trees

We'll lay on the grass

And let the hours pass

Take my hand

Come back to the land

Let's get away

Just for one day

Let me see you

Stripped down to the bone

Let me hear you

Make decisions

Without your television

Let me hear you speaking

Just for me

Filming of a scene for Doctor Who Series 11 outside Park Hill flats in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The filming was attended by Jodie Whittaker and the new TARDIS team of Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. Tuesday 13th February 2018. This is the brand new TARDIS prop. I wasn't convinced when I first saw a photo of it, but having seen it in the fresh it's really sexy (as the Doctor would say!).

The episode being filmed was Arachnids In The UK, episode 4 of Series 11, first broadcast on Sunday 28th October 2018.

Turns out it is a set for a US TV Series called Black Sails.

My friend's tired, old TV set.

Mom: There's me and my flowerpot hat. It's just so interesting and go back in time like that and see the care that everyone dressed with. You know, the gloves and shoes and how they all matched. I mean, I wouldn't want to go back. But it fascinates me. You know, I made that dress from the same pattern as my green luau dress, only I made this one short and the other one long.

Me: Where did you get the patterns?

Mom: Back then, you went to the five-and-ten...to Woolworth's, actually...and they had the big pattern books with the pictures, and you gave them the number and they got you the pattern. All the department stores had fabric departments—they had the pattern books, too. Actually, it was there I got most of the patterns—the department stores.

Me: When did you stop making your own dresses?

Mom: When I had you guys.

Me: Do you have any desire to make you own dresses again?

Mom: No. You know, part of it is you can't get fabric, especially out here. I went out looking for fabric for a table cloth recently and I couldn't. And it's hard to find fabric online.

Me: About that Rockefeller Center picture...

Mom: Aunt Millie gave me that. Actually, we picked it out together. I think I got it for the frame—it matched the carpet. It wasn't because of any love of the buildings.

Me: Well, it's very modern.

Mom: Well, my apartment was very modern.

No, not a photo of our new telly, but it's my entry for the #23 - Technology category in the 112 in 2012 Group.

Built between 1898 and 1930 as a sanatorium for lung diseases, Beelitz-Heilstätten was one of the largest hospitals in and around Berlin. It served as a field hospital in the two world wars and was later the Soviets' major military hospital in East Germany. Abandoned in 1994 with the Russian withdrawal, most buildings have slowly fallen into ruins since. What a shame. We found this scene (probably staged by other photographers) in one of the kitchen buildings.

Step into the warm, well-worn kitchen of culinary legend Julia Child—just as she left it. This carefully preserved exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. captures the essence of a life devoted to food, flavor, and fearless experimentation.

More than just a set, this is the actual kitchen from Julia Child’s Cambridge, Massachusetts home, where she filmed three of her PBS television shows. The exhibit preserves over 1,200 original objects including her well-used copper pans, classic blue cabinetry, signature pegboards, and vintage cooking appliances. Every detail offers a window into Julia's exuberant spirit and practical creativity.

The Smithsonian display recreates the room exactly as it stood—down to the table settings and quirky wall art. Knives are lined up on a magnetic strip, pots hang in easy reach, and her famously towering presence is felt in the room’s custom-height counters. The open shelving and functional chaos reflect the working kitchen of a woman who revolutionized how America thought about cooking.

Visitors can peer into this space through glass, as if walking into a moment suspended in time. For fans of food, history, or television, it’s a meaningful pilgrimage spot.

Photographed with care to minimize reflections and glare, these images highlight the museum's immersive preservation work and the enduring legacy of one of America's most beloved cooks.
