Runyon and I were out on the golf course early in the morning when we saw a large Eastern Snapping Turtle on the course. I was around 16-18" long (as far as I can tell). I saw a post that indicated that it is nesting season for these reptiles. I was so surprised that we ran back for my camera! The turtle was still there. Very cool wildlife in my neighborhood. These were taken on June 19th, 2020 at the Pine View Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Tuesday. I went for a beach walk to clear my head, and got to take some fun pictures of our sea turtle nests. The sign marks the area, but the actual nest is beneath the metal grate; the grate keeps raccoons and others from digging up the eggs. I can't wait until they hatch (as long as I'm there to see it).

A "false crawl" is when a turtle visits the beach but doesn't make a nest. There are a variety of naturally-occurring reasons that a turtle will leave - maybe the sand conditions aren't right, or there are predators present. These are compounded by people-caused conditions such as HAZARDS and OBSTRUCTIONS, noise, light and activity.

The next day, there was evidence that the nest was dug up and the eggs were eaten... by a Raccoon maybe?

Baby loggerheads poke their heads and flippers out of the sand, where they're hatching after about 50 days.
Safe sites for egg-laying have been made on the beach, and the turtle nests are monitored and guarded.
This is the hatching nest. The resort workers don't dig them out, but they do grab them when they've emerged. They keep them safe until it's dark so they can release them without them being eaten by birds.
We covered the snappers nest as suggested by sites on the internet. It takes 80-90 days for snapper eggs to hatch, so this piece of my already small vegetable plot will remain unused.
