Sometimes they dig in the darnedest places, like this one along the side of the busy park road.

Runyon and I were out on the golf course early in the morning when we saw a large Eastern Snapping Turtle on the course. I was around 16-18" long (as far as I can tell). I saw a post that indicated that it is nesting season for these reptiles. I was so surprised that we ran back for my camera! The turtle was still there. Very cool wildlife in my neighborhood. These were taken on June 19th, 2020 at the Pine View Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Since Tulum playa is a big place for nesting sea turtles, this is how Maya Tulum protects the location of the nests from being stepped on. The sign has the species of turtle, either the hatch or lay date (it was hard for me to figure), and the tag of the mother if she had one.

Tuesday. I went for a beach walk to clear my head, and got to take some fun pictures of our sea turtle nests. The sign marks the area, but the actual nest is beneath the metal grate; the grate keeps raccoons and others from digging up the eggs. I can't wait until they hatch (as long as I'm there to see it).

A "false crawl" is when a turtle visits the beach but doesn't make a nest. There are a variety of naturally-occurring reasons that a turtle will leave - maybe the sand conditions aren't right, or there are predators present. These are compounded by people-caused conditions such as HAZARDS and OBSTRUCTIONS, noise, light and activity.

The next day, there was evidence that the nest was dug up and the eggs were eaten... by a Raccoon maybe?
