originally this quilt was going to be a "turning twenty" quilt. but it's impossible to pick just 20 amy butler prints, they are all so lovely. plus, i knew i wanted it for my king size bed. (mind you, this is only my second quilt! i must have been insane when i decided to tackle this project!) so i added an extra row or two... and ta da! my quilt is finished & just as beautiful as i imagined. every time i look at it i smile! it's so bright & cheery how could you go wrong?

We got a little more snow, then the clouds left and the sky turned such a pretty blue shade.
I've been spending lots of time recently taking shots of dogs, horses, cows and all things rural. Just need some time to get on top of processing them.
This is my brother in law and nephew in the countryside near Glossop. He has lots of cattle which will feature soon too.
This concludes the ending of my photo series The Coming Tide, all shot during the first day of the DC Flickr Gathering. I hope that you have the time to check out the rest of the series to appreciate what each piece contributes to something greater than the sum of their parts. While executing these pictures, a story sort of came to mind and I would love to hear anyone else's opinion on if these evoke a sense of a.story. A westbound weekday South Shore train is turning off 11th St. and cutting over to Tenth St. in Michigan City, May 1976.
Empty coal bins take the switch at West Chub Lake and turn onto the Brainerd Subdivision. I saw a favorable signal when I drove into Carlton, so I naturally had to see what would be showing up. I managed to leapfrog this train for one more shot before the sun disappeared for the day.
HSS! processing of the leaves involved an underpainting filter, edge enhancement and burning to define the veins.
After a little over 15 years of posting photos on Flickr, I am approaching 1000 photos uploaded… so I finally “turned pro.” Will I post more often again now that I don’t have the file limit in mind? Time will tell I suppose…
But for now, here’s a favorite frame from last summer I hadn’t gotten around to posting yet. It also ties back to being one of the first "out of town" places I convinced my Dad to take me to back in 2004 specifically to catch a train for photos, the first in what would become many, many such adventures.
A warm, sunny June Sunday evening has brought a lot of boats out on Lake Wisconsin to enjoy the long evening. Amongst the roar of boat motors and the hum of the nearby Merrimac Ferry, Wisconsin and Southern WAMX 4223 ambles across the bridge at Merrimac with the L463 local. This Madison to Baraboo turn forwards traffic for the L863 to deliver to local customers throughout Sauk County. They've got an unusually short train this particular day.
The train is passing over two of the newest spans of this bridge originally built in the 1870s. The summer of 2024 saw contractor Michels Construction along with subcontractors gradually swap out many of spans, assembling them on the far shore out of frame to the right and then floating them out into the Wisconsin River to change out in short work windows. This work has been the reason this train has been running in the late evening and overnight for the last few years, to allow day time work windows for the construction crews. The job site is quiet for now, but come Monday morning crews will be back prepping for the next span swap.
The WSOR along with the State of Wisconsin (and FRA via a grant) have undertaken an extensive rehabilitation of the former Chicago and Northwestern Bridge here at Merrimac, Wisconsin. Once a double track gauntlet bridge with an interesting history that’s too involved to get into too much about detail here, it’s always had a bit of a hodge-podge look of different types of spans. But Phase III of the more than $25 Million project conducted in 2024 brought a pretty dramatic change. Piers from the original bridge were mostly left as is with new concrete caps poured, but many of the classic lattice truss spans and smaller girder spans have been replaced. I came across this old railroad crossing sign while exploring a section of abandoned train track that runs along the Chattahoochee River, in the historic district of the city of Columbus, Georgia. Seeing it brought to mind those times I myself was at a proverbial crossing in my life. Standing in front of it, I ponder what if anything it may be trying to show me, and what direction this sign may lead me.
