Anglesey Abbey is a country house, formerly a priory, in the village of Lode, 5 ½ miles (8.8 km) northeast of Cambridge, England. The house and its grounds are owned by the National Trust and are open to the public as part of the Anglesey Abbey, Garden & Lode Mill property, although some parts remain the private home of the Fairhaven family.
The 98 acres (400,000 m²) of landscaped grounds are divided into a number of walks and gardens, with classical statuary, topiary and flowerbeds. The grounds were laid out in an 18th-century style by the estate's last private owner, the 1st Baron Fairhaven, in the 1930s. A large pool, the Quarry Pool, is believed to be the site of a prehistoric coprolite mine. Lode Water Mill, dating from the 18th century was restored to working condition in 1982 and now sells flour to visitors.
The 1st Lord Fairhaven also improved the house and decorated its interior with a valuable collection of furniture, pictures and objets d'art.
The extensive landscaped gardens are popular with visitors throughout the year. The most visited areas include the rose garden and the dahlia garden, which contain many dozens of varieties. Out of season the spring garden and winter dell are famed nationally, particularly in February when the snowdrops first appear. The lawns of the South Park are mown less frequently and this allows the many wildflowers to flower and set seed. Over 50 species of wildflower have been recorded, including Bee Orchid, Twayblade, Pyramidal Orchid and Common spotted orchid. In mid-summer, there are large numbers of butterflies such as Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Small Skippers and Marbled Whites.
We just got back from a really fine week at Methwold Old Vicarage, a wonderful Landmark Trust property. The house dates to 1490-1510, and is quite beautiful inside and out. For an American like me, the idea of sleeping in a house constructed in the time of Columbus's voyage is just too amazing.
The brick front is a veritable sampler of ornate brickwork from the period and remains a real show piece. There are gorgeous carved beams inside, and cool remnants of late 16th century wall paintings in the main bedroom upstairs that are museum quality. And we slept in that bedroom.
Wow.
We're totally hooked, and definitely planning another Landmark Trust stay before we return to the States this summer!

St John's was rebuilt after a fire in 1405 and has a prominent sandstone tower which serves as a local landmark. The roofs and many of the fittings were renewed in 1854 during a restoration by James Fowler of Louth.

First time I had been to Wednesday late opening at Bodnant. I thought it would be quiet. Some hope! Must choose a rainy day next time. I sat waiting for the Laburnum arch to be free of folk but there was a photographer at the far end with a camera on a red mini tripod in view even though he or she was sitting on a bench out of frame. In the end I gave up and cloned it out in this shot. Second outing with the 16-35 F4L - is a quite awesome lens and better than the 17-40 L. I could have metered this better as, even in the evening, contrast is an issue if there is sunlight. There is movement in the petals unfortunately so it looks unsharp. Been wasting lots of ink today trying to get the yellow to print acceptably.
Out on display for the public, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust cares for orphaned baby elephants. Here they have just had a feeding, and are socializing with their peers, as well as the public.

Sir Francis Legh's Clock Collection.
The longcase clocks include three by Thomas Tompion, one by George Graham and an amazing marquetry clock by Henry Young with a very unusual arch dial and long pendulum. There is also a clock by William Grimes with unique marquetry showing hunting scenes and stags.
Francis Michael Legh was one of the last children to grow up at Lyme. He was the third son of the Hon Richard Legh who became the 3rd Lord Newton.
Francis was an equerry to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother before becoming Private Secretary to HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon in 1959. He was made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1968 and remained Treasurer to Princess Margaret until his death in 1984.
Throughout his life Sir Francis maintained a passion for horology amassing one of the most important collections of English clocks. The other great interests of his life was Lyme. Even after the estate had been bequeathed to the National Trust, Sir Francis held a deep devotion to the estate as well to those who worked here.
In his will Sir Francis generously left his magnificent collection of clocks to the National Trust, stipulating they should be displayed at Lyme for visitors to enjoy. In the intervening years, several other special clocks have been added to the collection.
Stella was in dogs trust for 6 weeks, in this time I fell in love with her. She had a terrible skin condition which has now fully cleared up after living in a comfortable home and eating a good diet! Stella brightens up my world, she is always so happy to greet us and loves going out for walks which gets me out of the house and exercising. How can you resist that waggy tail which brings a smile to your face no matter what kind of day you have had!
