This elephant was taking a swim and flirting with everyone who was watching him. He extended his trunk to within a couple of feet of me as if to introduce himself.
This kid was awesome at Apple Bobbing. He kept coming back, even though he kept getting wet. He was the only kid to do it the proper way. He made it easy to get some great action shots.
Spent the prior night in Elkhart IN, but not really sure where these Grand Trunk photos were taken other than "Indiana".
"The proboscis, or trunk, is a fusion of the nose and upper lip, elongated and specialized to become the elephant's most important and versatile appendage. African elephants are equipped with two fingerlike projections at the tip of their trunk, while Asians have only one. According to biologists, the elephant's trunk may have over forty thousand individual muscles in it,[25] making it sensitive enough to pick up a single blade of grass, yet strong enough to rip the branches off a tree. Some sources indicate that the correct number of muscles in an elephant's trunk is closer to one hundred thousand." (Wikipedia)
We found this trunk for $3.87 at a junk store. The wood stripping on the edges is in bad shape and falling off in places, and the trunk needs overall tightening. It's not pretty as is, but it will be perfect for mosaic!
The slats that make up the top of the trunk have slight gaps in them. I think I'm going to fill them in and mosaic it as a smooth surface. I've been considering using rigid wrap to make that happen, but I'd love to hear any other thoughts you have on how to achieve that.
The trunk portion of IC1396 after adding OIII and SII data. One of my first real attempts at the Hubble Palette. Noisy, soft and a little too pastel but the more I work on it the worse it gets.

You never know what you'll find in the vicinity of a semi-abandoned cemetery! I was almost scared to touch this. No way I was going to try to open this thing. Talk about a Pandora's Box!
19 June 2010: This is a closeup of the cuttout for the Mirage Drive after 20 miles on boat. The parallel lines are from the drive chain and the dent to the left is from slapping the fins against the bottom of the hull. The fin slapping was from early inexperience. After a few hours in boat I don't seem to do that any more. The chain cuts require enlargement of the slot. In one case the cuts penetrated to the wood core.
A group we belong to had a trunk or treat with a petting zoo. The petting zoo was the hit, however, this gentleman was kind enough to come with his car all fixed up for a trunk or treat.
Taken with a Canon AE-1 Program on Arista EDU Ultra 400 film. Developed in Caffenol C-H for 15 minutes with regular agitation. I used a Sony NEX-F3 camera as a film copier.
Trunk of our 2006 Mazda 3, showing the things we carry around in case of emergency, which are held in place by bungee cords. We try not to carry around too much extra weight. There's a small toolkit, The Club, an emergency jump starter from Black & Decker, a squeegee, a duster for the dashboard, an ice scraper, some paper towels, a sun shield, and at far left, an emergency pee bottle!
