In 1981, while working on my BFA, I had to study color theory. The course was patterned after the famed Bauhaus curriculum, and emphasized the work of Josef Albers. I hated it. Little squares of painted gouache laid in grids to make the colors dance, vibrate and modulate in the eye. I hated gouache, the little squares, and the rigorous tedium the class itself.
It was one of the best classes I ever took. I use the science and art of color as much compositionally as any other element of design. Yeah Jim, the book in front of the face is cliche' material. Happy Cliche' Saturday! If one wants to learn about color theory in visual art, Itten's work, The Art of Color and The Elements of Color have no peers.

One of my favorite groups, where I made the majority of my flickr friends, The Rogue Players, is dropping the final curtain and turning out the lights today. In the evening of our lives we care less about being percieved a fool.
During the clinical portion of studying the mentally ill, we lived in dormitories at the state hospital. Several of the criminally insane patients stick in my mind. One in particular was never allowed human contact for the semester I was there. He had burned his family alive in their home. That was 16 years ago. His eyes still haunt me at times.

A troupe of itinerant drunk stoners rides into town. Using hand tools and rusty fasteners, they assemble giant mechanical contrivances meant to carry people aloft to great heights. Then they charge otherwise intelligent people exorbitant fees for the privilege of riding in the contraptions. I not only fail to understand the allure, I'm not planting my butt into one of the things.
I've ridden over shark infested waters in aircraft maintained by high school drop-outs. I've raced motorcycles that were older than my father. I've eaten fugu and drank habu sake, but I'll be damned if I'll trust the mechanical aptitude and inspection acuity of a transient I've never met before. I'm not letting them work on the car I drive, and I'm not getting in their rides at the fair.
