The element carbon usually has six protons and six neutrons. In this form it is called carbon 12. But cosmic rays streaming into our atmosphere occasionally smash into the nitrogen in our atmosphere and creates a form of carbon with two extra neutrons called carbon 14. Above ground nuclear testing that started in 1955 released torrents of high-energy neutrons into the atmosphere. These neutrons smashed into nitrogen and created much more carbon 14 than normal. As this energy was gathered into the hair follicles of upper lips, glowing moustaches were grown in some climates. Over time, the radioactivity could cause blindness or rare forms of post nasal drips if the hair was not kept securely contained within aluminum foil.
