A cattle's trough perched on the side of the mendips overlooking the Somerset levels. Glastonburry tor can be just made out on the horizon and Westbury sub Mendip below. Fantastic evening light. Taken on a tripod with Lee graduated filter.

Stanier 'Black Five' 4-6-0 5038 with an up express taking water at Bushey water troughs, probably in the late 1930s. Introduced into LMS service from the Vulcan Foundry in September 1934, it remained in service until 1968, being withdrawn from Stockport Edgeley shed (9B) in February 1968. It was in the first batch of 57 of the class built with domeless boilers, straight throatplate and a low degree of superheat. These were soon to be converted with a high superheat boiler and dome, and 5038 had been so-fitted by 1938, and with its top feed pipes recessed into the boiler casing, as in this photograph.The locomotive carries the short-lived 1936 style of sans serif numbering and lettering.

The Swabian Jura (Schwäbische Alb, (also, rarely) Schwäbischer Jura), sometimes also given the name Swabian Alps in English, is a low mountain range in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, extending 220 km (140 mi) from southwest to northeast and 40 to 70 km (25 to 43 mi) in width. It is named after the region of Swabia.
The Swabian Jura occupies the region bounded by the Danube in the southeast and the upper Neckar in the northwest. In the southwest it rises to the higher mountains of the Black Forest. The highest mountain of the region is the Lemberg (1,015 m (3,330 ft)). The area's profile resembles a high plateau, which slowly falls away to the southeast. The northwestern edge is a steep escarpment (called the Albtrauf or Albanstieg, rising up 400 m (1,300 ft), covered with forests), while the top is flat or gently hilled.
In economic and cultural terms, the Schwäbische Alb includes regions just around the mountain range. It is a popular recreation area.

Humane Society horse trough on the bridle path south of Joyce Rd. in Rock Creek Park this afternoon. C. 1900 over 50 of these were placed at major intersections for working horses, and this one was probably relocated here when the remaining ones were removed by the city c. 1957-8.
