Trigger Treat 2022, The Wastelands, the Junkyard,

Oct29-2022

My newly designed arduino-based flash trigger. I even gave it cool programmable status LEDs (all cool projects need status LEDs :-) ). So far, only a sound-triggered input has been added, but I've left room on the board for other detectors such as beam-break, lightning, etc.

I use this in my Stopping Time set.

day twenty / 365 (explored on Jun 12, 2009)

Just over the 5% mark, and already things are starting to get tough! But I'm having a lot of fun along the way :)

Today Grace (featured) organized a studio shoot... a long, hectic day (I hate 1 hour parking limits!)

Strobist: To me, this is gold! (Read on)

All the back lights were on full power (That was GK's idea... check my EXIF data for the F stop!).

From memory, they were 2 580EXII's (top), a Nikon SB-26 (middle) and 2 430EXs (bottom). The one not firing is some weird old (edit: National PE3xxxx something or other) one of GK's :)

I had a Cactus V4 trigger on my camera, which was setting off the 580EXII's.

There was a studio monobloc (edit: with a standard reflector with a honeycomb grid :)) to camera left firing in slave mode, and the Nikon SB-26 was firing in slave mode.

The other two flashes were hooked up to Elinchrom Skyports, and the trigger for them was sitting on an optical->hotshoe convertor.

We tried to get this working with the Canon IR wireless system, but seemed to keep getting no-fires.

Cosmic Trigger Play by Daisy Eris Campbell

Adapted from Robert Anton Wilson’s seminal autobiography Cosmic Trigger: The Final Secret of The Illuminati

4th – 27th May 2017

The Cockpit - Gateforth St, Marylebone, London NW8 8EH

“Robert Anton Wilson’s 'Illuminatus!' had a profound effect on me and the Cosmic Trigger Play will no doubt do the same for a whole new generation.” Alan Moore, writer/author of V for Vendetta, Watchmen and Jerusalem

Turn On. Tune In. Find The Others

In 1976 revered maverick playwright and director Ken Campbell staged Robert Anton Wilson’s, Illuminatus! - a nine-hour stage epic play that helped launch the careers of Jim Broadbent and Bill Nighy. It also led to the backstage conception of a baby girl; Daisy Eris Campbell.

“one of the most original and unclassifiable talents in British theatre of the past half-century”

The Guardian obituary for Ken Campbell – 2008

Now Love & Will Productions and The Cockpit are delighted to announce the debut full run of Daisy Campbell’s adaptation of Wilson’s seminal countercultural text; Cosmic Trigger. Part sequel, part revisit, part homage, part new writing; this is the story behind the notorious conspiracy satire, 'Illuminatus!', the extraordinary life of the novel's author, Robert Anton Wilson, and the unstoppable force that was theatre legend Ken Campbell.

Daisy Campbell says; "Reading Cosmic Trigger changed my life and the lives of many others - and the book is dedicated to my dad! Wilson's uniquely optimistic and radically agnostic philosophy is incredibly relevant in these crazy times. We are absolutely thrilled to be working with The Cockpit on this production. They are the perfect co-conspirators to help us bring the wit and wisdom of Robert Anton Wilson back to life."

The original work reinterpreted world history as a giant conspiracy theory and Daisy’s new work gives a backstory to the original production, featuring the lives of Wilson and Campbell, as well as the counterculture figures Timothy Leary, Alan Watts and William Burroughs, whom Robert Anton Wilson befriended.

Set in the late sixties and early seventies, the play recounts the period of Wilson's life around the conception and writing of Illuminatus. During this time, he befriended heroes of counterculture, took LSD and experimented with the magical rituals of Aleister Crowley with predictably - and unpredictably - mind-blowing results.

With many of the original cast returning and Alan Moore appearing via specially recorded audio and morphed video projections Cosmic Trigger is a celebration of all that has gone before it as well as a vital venture in its own right. This is a highly ambitious production, with projections in the round, phantasmagorical multiple narratives, and a different actor performing as William Burroughs every night, it is designed to evoke the real-life hallucinogenic trip through conspiracy, paranoia and enlightenment that transformed Robert Anton Wilson from ‘Playboy’ editor to much-loved counter-cultural icon.

Dave Wybrow, Artistic Director of the Cockpit and co producer of Cosmic Trigger says; “We are putting together a venue, a tribe and new ways of networking and creating work. It’s about joining low tech to hi tech, low culture to high culture and low budgets to high levels of audience reach and social impact. This first venture looks at counter-cultural legacy. But the vision is an open artistic community for the future.”

Cosmic Trigger previously played for two days in November in Camp & Furnace in Liverpool and five days at Lost Theatre Vauxhall in London in 2014 – this is the play’s first full run.

Novus is a small, isolationist island nation with very few dealing with the outside world. Consequentially, it is not a very wealthy country. However, it is extremely territorial and allows almost no outsiders inside and severely restricts international travel for its own citizens. This has lead to a very secretive, xenophobic foreign policy, which is reflected in their Aerial Police Force. The entire Novulan Navy is composed of only one ship type, the Trigger class. The designer of this airship is unknown, as is the true number of them built.

The Trigger class is built around a Heavy Railgun, which gives these small ships a huge advantage in firepower over other ships in their weight class. The Trigger is also very fast and nimble, however its engines cannot power both the propellers and the railgun at the same time. Additionally, the secondary weaponry of this ship is extremely lacking. With only three light cannons and six float mine launchers, this ship is not as well-armed as most military ships, excluding its main armament. Its armor is slightly above average for a destroyer, mostly around its railgun mountings to reduce chances of a critical hit.

The entire purpose of these ships is simply to make it unprofitable for outside nations to launch an attack on Novus, while also keeping a tight grip on air travel in and especially out of the island. Swarms of these ships could theoretically be defeated by an enemy fleet, but their railguns would cause so much damage that the effort would hardly be worth it to rule over such a poor nation. Secondly, the cheapness of these ships mean many can patrol Novulan airspace and intercept ships and be able to destroy them quickly.

With the Trigger-class, Novus has secured its borders, but its people grow restless and frustrated of their poverty and oppression. Many believe an uprising is inevitable, with the only real question beingwhich side foreign powers would support.

One of the frustration thing of using radio triggers is lacking of focus assist in dark environment. To "celebrate" the expiration on warranty of the ST-E2, I add a sync port to use the eBay trigger with it.

Beside focus aid, one of the advantage of this set up is to able to use the Canon EX Speedlites (in ETTL or manual mode) with other manual flash/strobe that connected to the RF receivers at the same time, without any sync problems.

I was puzzled by the name, but it seems that Trigger is a character on the TV show "Only Fools & Horses" (which I've never seen) who claims his broom is original, apart from having had several replacement heads and handles.

The idea for that must surely come from "The Ship Of Theseus" folklore - so the car is made from several other vehicle parts I imagine.
