I joined Chris Dodds and some other great photographers at the Pond at Elephant Head to shoot some bats this past September. It's quite an experience. Despite technical difficulties that seemed to plague me, I still came away with some pictures I'm proud of. This bat was captured by setting your camera to take a picture every 10 seconds. A beam is set up across a small (read small "very" small") pond which triggers the flash as a bat crosses the beam. You end up with a lot of black images and some wonderful keepers. I'll post an example of the other set up which uses a flower the bats love and triggers for both camera and flash.

Trigger plants (Stylidium sp) use insects to help with pollination. As the insect settles in on the flower it triggers off a reproductive arm as such with pollen on the end quickly snapping on the unsuspecting insect. This does no harm to the visitor but has left pollen on it's body for when it flies off to the next flower. The trigger winds back ready for the next visitor.
Once again I found myself up at Cowee Mountain Overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I had intended to find a nice little spot somewhere in the mountains earlier, but as time drew short, the cloud levels continued to drop, I fell back into one of my favorite scenes. The clouds were rushing in and out of the valley, the humidity was making everyone uncomfortable... That's photography though, chasing light like a star struck groupie, fumbling the relationship more often than not... but sometimes, the stars align and you find some headway. [That may be the nicest way I have ever described chasing light.....] So, there I stood, having carefully, slowly setting up my equipment, prepping my exposure, watching the nearby photographers with their own array of gadgets and gizmos, and no doubt strong opinions on the same scene. Lots of laughter, lots of waiting... while I stood near my tripod, trigger in hand snapping shots every so often, tracking and waiting for these corpuscular rays to cut through the clouds in just the right way. Finally I had a few moments to grab the shot I was waiting on, just as a huge cloud came and filled the entire valley. That was it according to four of the photographers, no more light, the day was done 45 minutes till actual sunset, five before golden hour... But the rest of us stayed, perhaps not wishing to admit defeat, maybe convinced the light would return...

Stylidium are known as "trigger plants" because of the unique, irritable flower column which is triggered by insect visitors. The trigger remains cocked until an insect probes the flower and then springs upwards and deposits pollen on the head or back of the insect which then transfers the pollen to another flower.

It's coming into Autumn here but these Trigger Flowers are trying to make the most of the weather. They usually flower in Spring and Summer but it was so dry and hot that they seem to have put flowering off till later. We've had plenty of rain now so the flowering season has extended.

I truly Love trying to capture butterflies in their world of small wonders.This guy is a Wood-Nymph butterfly cruising for i guess some nectar nourishment.They to me are as beautiful as when i followed with my lens live, then now as i see the final result.

As a race, we have been society building for millennia,
the freedoms for which, have, at times, relied on the great sacrifice of others,
I have been freely visiting Wigan since child hood, satisfying my railway enthusiasm,
With "Anzac" day approaching, on the 25th April, and from comments by a fellow Flickr-ite, rail enthusiast and friend, i was mindful to produce a tribute in some way or another, ( i'm sorry if the image doesn't match expectation), but a "train" of thought was triggered when i saw this Ad and the women around it......
they had the unenviable task of waiting.... and hoping...
while their men went through atrocities and the torment of uncertainty.....
From which, we have more certainty in the "here today", "here tomorrow" of this Ad for a Building Society.

The lower or foreground image, is an image taken on a recent visit to Wigan's North Western station, this is the scene that set my cogs whirring......

I usually setup 2 lights with shoot through umbrellas for our tight little interior shooting area. The lights are triggered with radios, specifically Pocket Wizards. But, let's say you occasionally run into a problem with one, or more, and they don't work, usually a fluke though. Pocket Wizard's are top of the line radio triggers, but even they can fail from time to time. In the above photo the main light on the left didn't fire. Usually, the image would be a "throw away." But, in this case, I kinda' liked the the result and decided to do the edit. It is proof that even one off camera light could yield some interesting results.
These images capture the mesmerizing beauty of water drop collisions, achieved using a Pluto Trigger and Pluto Valve for precise timing. The top layer consists of milk, while the base is water infused with red food coloring. The contrast creates a stunning visual interplay of fluid motion, forming delicate structures that last for just a fleeting moment.
Each droplet descends in milliseconds, rebounding into an intricate dance as the next drop collides. The swirling milk and red water create otherworldly forms—some resembling volcanic eruptions, others evoking the sense of a rising phoenix. The physics behind each shot is as captivating as the aesthetic result.
By fine-tuning the drop size, delay, and flash timing, each frame becomes a unique, unrepeatable composition. A perfect example of the unpredictable nature of fluid dynamics, frozen in time.
