The heaviest rains ever recorded in India have shut down the country's financial and entertainment capital, Mumbai.

Landslides and flooding triggered by three days of monsoonal rain have left at least 418 dead in the city and surrounding state of Maharashtra.

Parts of the city - which has a population of more than 15 million - received 944 millimetres of rain on Tuesday night alone. Sydney's average annual rainfall is 1216.5 millimetres.

"Never before in Bombay's [Mumbai's] history has this happened," the police commissioner, A.N. Roy said.

Tens of thousands of people were stranded in Mumbai on Tuesday night, with many forced to sleep in their waterlogged cars or on the floor of the airport terminal. All India Radio reported that about 150,000 people were stranded in railway stations.

Rajesh Khubchandani, a businessman, abandoned his flooded car. He was stranded with several other people for 15 hours on a traffic island in a suburban neighbourhood.

"We saw two bodies floating past. I don't know how they died but they just floated past early in the morning," he said.

Television footage showed mobs of people fighting for food parcels dropped from helicopters by navy rescue teams. There was also footage of two dead men sprawled in the streets of a Mumbai neighbourhood while people scrambled for food packages nearby.

In the confusion, a fire on a gas well just off the Mumbai coast, also rain-affected, engulfed an oil rig. Ten people died and 367 were rescued.

Officials said yesterday that it might take a year to rebuild the platform, which produced a seventh of the country's oil.

"Most places in India don't receive this kind of rainfall in a year. This is the highest ever recorded in India's history," said R.V. Sharma, director of the meteorological department.

Until Wednesday, the country's heaviest rainfall in 24 hours was 838 millimetres, recorded in 1910 at Cherrapunji, in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya.

On Wednesday, telephone services collapsed under the weight of traffic and many families text-messaged television stations, which ran their messages across screens all day.

There were also reports of schoolchildren unable to return home because streets were neck-deep in water. Jayant Shah said he had walked through the night from his office in the city centre to reach his daughter. "It was safer that my daughter was in school because I was stuck in my office," he said.

Maharashtra's political leadership reacted to the freak weather conditions by announcing a public holiday.

"We have declared a public holiday and asked people to stay indoors," the Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, said as water submerged several central and suburban areas.

The monsoon feeds India's agricultural belt, but also brings misery and devastation.

The city's bond, commodity and currency markets halted trading on Wednesday. The stockmarket stayed open but closed yesterday.

One concern was that Mumbai's thriving call centre and information technology industry, which relies on its 140,000 workers being connected to the global economy, would be hit hard.

My solution for vivitar flash and e-bay triggers.

The sender is modded with an antenna. I prefer a piece of flexible wire - it is easy to pack in my back. Range about 40 meters which is about doble range compared to my sender without an arial.

The receiver is modded as SnapperOrgans has described in this discussion: www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157600074580861/

Finally I have removed all wires and velded wires directly from the receiver to the hotshoe of the vivitar. Polarity was fixed by trial and error. The wires are attached to the side of the vivitar with gaffers tape, and the reciever is attached with velcro.

It works - no problems with wires, bad connections and the flashes are always ready for use. I have almost none misfires.

I have three vivitars modded this way - one with blue wires, one with red and the last with mixed colors blue and red. In this way it is easy to identify each flash from the others.

A one vehicle crash has occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near the 318-mile marker.

An 18-wheel box truck traveling northbound along Interstate 65 went off road just south of mile marker 318 around 2:00 am this morning. The crash triggered a fully involved cab fire as the big rig rolled over onto its passenger side.

Fortunately, the operator of the truck, with assistance from rapidly arriving emergency responders, was able to be extricated from the vehicle before the ensuing fire overcame him.

Multiple units from the Vinemont-Providence Fire Department (VPFD), Falkville Fire and Rescue (FFR) and Cullman Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) were among the first to arrive. Emergency medical technicians treated the driver at the scene and then transported him to Cullman Regional Medical Center. The extent and nature of the operator’s injuries are not publicly available; they are initially believed to be non-life threatening.

The rollover has created havoc on Interstate 65.

The northbound lanes were quickly shut down and detoured at the Alabama Highway 157 (Exit 310) intersection by units from Cullman Police Department and Cullman County Sheriff’s Office. Vehicles heading north towards Huntsville are detouring into the City of Cullman along Highway 157, then turning left up Highway 31 to rejoin Interstate 65 at the mile marker 318 interchange.

About four dozen 18 wheel vehicles and numerous passenger cars made it north past 157 before the Interstate was shutdown and detoured. These vehicles and drivers found the entirety of the northbound section of the Interstate blocked at the crash site.

As a result, these folks have gotten an unexpected and unwanted rest stop directly on the interstate. Many motorists have shut down their running lights. They are patiently waiting for the roadway to clear. In speaking with a handful of individuals waiting it out, while not happy about the delay, they were reasonable and phlegmatic about their plight. One motorist traveling to Kentucky on business had this to say, “Had I known I was going to be stuck in this, I’d have just gotten a room. Looks like I am going to miss my 10 am meeting … at least I have a good excuse. It’s damn cold though … I hope I don’t run out of gas.”

The southbound lanes of Interstate 65 near the wreck site are unaffected.

Due to the extent of the damage along the roadway and the release of petrochemicals from the eighteen wheeler, Cullman County Hazardous Materials Team is on scene working to mitigate the environmental impact of the incident.

Troopers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are also on scene conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances that caused the crash. It is unclear initially what might have been at play at a causal level in this incident. That information will likely remain unknown until Troopers have completed their work and issued a final report.

Brutal cold and cutting winds have made an already stressful and difficult situation for emergency responders even more of challenge.

As of 6:15 am (the time of this report), Interstate 65 is still closed. It may be some time before the colossal debris field (which includes extensive damage to the guard rail system) is removed and the roadway/shoulder areas are made passable. While we cannot predict when this section of Interstate 65 will re-open, it is safe to assume it will effect morning drive time traffic.

Earl’s Body Shop (and Wrecker Service) has drawn the short straw. They get to provide the unenviable service of extracting the big rig, getting it upright and fully removed from the the scene.

If you are traveling northbound through Cullman on Interstate 65 this morning, some advanced planning and use of roadway navigation maps and alerts is smart business.

Using the CTR-301 as a stand for the 430 flash. You have to rotate the head backwards to compensate though, otherwise the whole thing just tips over.

And yes, it does say TSET instead of TEST on the trigger. That's what you get for buying cheap Chinese made hardware :)

Am I the only one who has a somewhat unhealthy adoration for this type of gear?

Shown here is the Lumopro 40" c-stand (black), the Cactus V5 radio trigger, the Yongnuo 560II flash, mounted to a (not shown here) Calumet 22" beauty dish via a vertical speedlite-to-Bowens-adapter.

impromtu shoot. I was asked to shoot a friend in boracay last weekend for fun and this three i love. Instead of using ettl i opted to use manual.

Great! I sanded off enough, but not too much! I deserve a beer! Coming right up...

So, you'll see that the screw is in , thru the wood and trigger, and with the trigger in the most depressed state, (poor, poor, sad trigger...) the nose will not protrude into the socket.

The shutter lag (time from triggering until shutter release) is consistently around 150 ms.

There is an uncertainty (jitter) of 20 ms stemming from the 50 Hz update rate of the scope.

There might be some additional systematic error from the internal workings of the scope and/or TriggerTrap.
