High Speed Photography using a Trigger Trap flash adapter with dongle.
Setup: Light stand with trigger trap flash adapter, speed light, dongle attached to iPhone using the Trigger Trap app on sound activation. One balloon suspended overhead. Sharp object to pop balloon. This time a dowel with a sewing pin taped to the end, with a black sock hiding the stick. And one very patient person ready to pop the balloon in the dark. Camera on Tripod with remote. Camera on bulb mode, F4-7 it varied during the project. 85mm lens, and the final photo was cropped to only 1/10th of the whole photo. Garage was completely dark. All windows covered with black table cloths, zero light leaks. Kiddy pool below the balloon to catch the water. Flash camera right, Sharp stick camera left, camera center about 10' away.
Had one person man the lights, another at the camera, one to pop the balloon. Lights off, Camera triggered in bulb mode, person pops balloon, pop activated flash after we heard the splash we released the trigger ending the exposure. Rinse and repeat. Balloon were water filled, some with colored water, some with glitter. My whole house now sparkles as we keep tracking it into the house from the garage.

Originally produced in 2006, there isn't much left of the original Riley 853 and its Dura Ace 7700 groupset. The cranks, brake calipers and front mech are all that exist of the original bike. The frame and fork was replaced in 2010. There have been numerous wheels and the gearset is now upgraded to being ten speed. Fastest ride in my stable.

Dit een gestripte versie van mijn DIY ArnoSync camera trigger. Deze versie is eveneens opgebouwd rond een PIC 12F675 microcontroller. Het is een versie met een lichtsterkere lens met een brandpunt afstand van 100 mm. Het apparaatje kan hierdoor een object in focus detecteren tot op 1 meter afstand van de camera.
Het is de bedoeling deze versie te gebruiken voor vogelfotografie. De gebruikte lasermodule is een IR (Infra Rood) versie welke ik nog beschikbaar had.
Alle onderdelen passen nog net op een mini breadboardje.
Het geheel is opgebouwd met een minimum aan onderdelen.
De aansluiting naar de Sony A6000 camera remote shutter input gebeurt nu via een robustere 3.5 mm chassis stereoplug. Voor de aansluiting naar de Sony A6000 synchro kabel is dus een extra 3.5mm naar 2.5 mm stereoadapter plugje nodig.
De voeding van het geheel gebeurt door een externe 5 Volt Mini Powerbank van 2600 mAh met schakelaar. Deze combinatie heeft een autonomie van ca. 100 uren. Door het gebruik van de on-off schakelaar enkel wanneer een detectie verwacht wordt kan er meerdere weken op een volgeladen Powerbank gewerkt worden.

This is a striped-down version of my classic DIY ArnoSync camera trigger device.
This version is still build around a PIC 12F675 device. The mini system uses a better lens (100 mm focus) before the SFH309 phototransistor. The working distance to the object is now about 3 feet.
The used Lasermodule is an IR (Infra Red) type which I found in my junk-box.
All the electronics are mounted on a mini prototype breadboard. The connection to the Sony A6000 camera is done via a 3.5 mm stereo chassis plug. A 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm adapter is needed to mate the Sony A6000 external shutter release cable.
The used power supply is a small 2600 mAh Powerbank of 5 Volt with an ON/OFF push button switch. This allows power for more as 100 hours in continuous operation or several weeks when only switched on when an object is expected in the detection zone.

Accidental photo. Was pissing about with the ISO setting and brushed the shutter button. And on an XA, a brush of the shutter button is all it takes...
Had some fun with local skaters and some flashes today. Here's the results...

Picture was published in Zoom magazine. Very proud of that.
Testing the repaired Vivitar 365 flash. Had to clean contacts in the trigger circuit in two places: the leaf spring behind the PC-cable socket, and the coil spring just above the hot shoe pin. I'm not sure what kind of metal it was, but both copper-coloured parts were so oxidised that they no longer made contact.
Then, I checked the trigger voltage with the Fluke 8800A (not the one in the photo, I have two of them) and found 48V. That's safe with the Canon 5D Mk III which is rated at 250V maximum.
Finally set white balance on the camera for xenon flash and exposed in manual according to the dial on the 365's Vari-Sensor module. Flash bounced off the ceiling because otherwise it reflected off the shiny dial of the HP 209A.
I wanted to shoot something but I had nothing to shoot. So I shot these...

Fired w/ Cactus V2 Triggers
One 6kV transformer, one studly HV rectifier, six 3kV capacitors (two in each can), six big power resistors, six more small power resistors, and a hydrogen thyratron. This was the most of the crap required to trigger the six ignitrons which the pulser originally used.
A cardboard AR-15 lower receiver. It's still in the making, but I haven't touched it in at least a few months. Yes, it's terribly out of scale and the (ambidextrous) fire selector is not correct, but this was originally going to be a Robinson Armament XCR. The trigger works, fire selector moves, and the magazine detaches. The magazine is held in by friction; the magazine release button you see on the side is non-functioning. The magazine also has a working follower.
