SENSATION (Syringa vulgaris)

This is a very unusual lilac; a dark purple flower with a brilliant white picotee margin. It was discovered by a Dutch hybridizer who was forcing lilacs as cut flowers in a greenhouse. One branch had this sport, or bud mutation, and Maarse recognized the interest that this lilac would create. (from a 2009 Park sign)

FLOWER CITY

This variety was developed at Highland Park by horticulturalist Richard Fenicchia. It is a unique variety that has cupped, dark violet-purple florets with a silvery reverse. Some Florets display radial doubling; an increase to 8, 10 or more petals. Its parent is 'rochester', also a Highland Park development. (2009 Park sign)

lilacs (are) of many colors and shades — lilac, white, blue, purple, magenta, violet, and pink. There’s even a yellowish lilac—S. vulgaris ‘Primrose’. It’s not the color of dandelions, but rather a luscious creamy yellow. Another unique cultivar is S. v. ‘Sensation’; its purple flowers have a white pinstripe around each petal. www.finegardening.com/article/lilacs-time-for-a-fresh-look

The white lilacs here are the FREDERICK LAW OLMSTEAD (Syringa vulgaris) LILAC

This lilac is one of the best white varieties, because of the abundance of its blooms, which often completely obscure the top of the shrub. It is a Highland Park development, and is named after the landscape architect who designed the original design of Highland Park, along with the Genesee Valley and Seneca. (from a 2009 Park sign)

Primrose French Lilac - Syringa - First Yellow Lilac Variant

Beautiful springtime blooms in a delicate shade of soft yellow make this lilac truly unique. Improved plants are carefree and vigorous, requiring very little maintenance. Intensely fragrant blossoms make it ideal as a specimen planting or as a bushy hedge. Handsome and compact, this fast grower covers itself with large panicles of flowers that become richer with age. The best color shows after about five years; however, the color is not as intense in warmer climates. Reaches a height of 8-10'. www.amazon.com/Primrose-French-Lilac-Syringa-Yellow/dp/B0...

ROUEN LILAC (Syringa x chinensis)

This is hybrid between the common and cutleaf lilacs. It has smaller foliage than the common lilac, and produces a heavy abundance of violet flowers, which frequently weigh down the branches. It is also highly fragrant, and is especially noticeable in early morning or evening. The Rouen lilac requires little maintenance, and is excellent for a boundary planting.
