Burundian refugee, Ndayisenga Manasse, 29, has spent two years working at the tree-planting nursery at Nduta camp, Tanzania, established by the non-governmental organisation, Relief To Development Society (REDESO). ; Nduta opened in October 2015 as an emergency measure to relocate 40,000 Burundian refugees from Nyarugusu camp. Quickly surpassing its capacity of 50,000 people, the Tanzanian Government extended the camp a year later. Its population numbers 125,000 (as of November 2017) and a programme of voluntary repatriation is in progress. Scarcity of firewood and other alternative energy sources remains a key challenge across all camps in western Tanzania, including near by Nyagurusu and Mtendeli. The REDESO nursery programme in Nduta provides an income of $15 a month for refugee workers tending the trees. There are nine types of trees grown, some for fruit and some for timber. Just 7 per cent of funding for UNHCR’s $217 million appeal to assist Burundian refugees in Tanzania has been received (as of Nov 2017.)
