Living for as many as seven years in the wild, the Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) has more energy than a human toddler. Those lucky enough to spot one, will find it darting quickly from view as it works its way down tree trunks in search of yummy insect morsels. Like other nuthatches, they are particularly well-suited to life upside-down, as they have an elongated rear toe that helps keep them steady. This little gentleman was photographed this spring, and is one of the first migrants to arrive north (it is also one of the earliest of birds to head south for the winter (often departing its nesting grounds in July)). Now, though, it's is just about time for love...and aggressive defense of his partner and nest cavity!

OK, so it is not a "tree", but my tomato plant. And I don't know what political leanings this Tobacco Hornworm has. But still...

"In geometry, a golden spiral is a logarithmic spiral whose growth factor is 1.618, the golden ratio. That is, a golden spiral gets wider by a factor of 1.618 for every quarter turn it makes." The fibonacci spiral is seen consistenly in nature, from the center of a flower to the cosmos. It is too complicated for me to explain, but a nice explanation of it can be seen here: www.treehugger.com/how-golden-ratio-manifests-nature-4869736

This stately copper beech tree has graced the front lawn of the Martin House for more than 100 years. It has withstood ice storms, winter winds, and the heat of summer. The copper beech is an ornamental cultivar of European beech, native to most of Europe and related to the American beech. This tree was planted circa 1905.

The tree said, "I wish I could be
A different kind of tree,
The cat wished that it was a bee,
The turtle wished that it could fly
Really high into the sky,
Over rooftops and then dive
Deep into the sea.
