One of the most fascinating indoor shopping experiences you can have in Traverse City is in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, a unique commercial/residential complex built in what was once a state mental asylum. Located just a few blocks from Downtown Traverse City, the Commons is a wonderful collection of shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants in a cluster of creamy castles, surrounded by acres of beautiful wooded grounds.

It looks much worse than it was, but still required a head for heights. This 24 mile marathon must easily fit within my all time best ten mountain hikes.
This particular day we set off early to complete the Dawson, Pitamaken loop, which has to be one of the most stupendous hikes I have ever undertaken. Our route would take us through forest for a few miles, alongside and way above a few isolated mountain lakes and then along a traverse which hugged the side of Flinsch Peak where this image was taken. Once we reached the bealach around the far side I dumped my rucksack and scooted off up to the summit of this wonderfully remote nine thousand foot peak. My issue here was that no one else wanted to extend the climb so whilst they disgruntledly waited for me to return they chose to partially fill my ruck sack with rocks. It was only six miles later when I realised what they had done. Had my hiking pals done right adding to my load, well they would say so given the fact that we missed the last boat of the day back to the campsite and had to walk. In fact matters became worse when we realised the track around the short side of Two Medicine Lake was closed due to bear activety, so instead we had to take the additional five mile route the long way back. I wasn't popular, but then I was the only one who had climbed anything that day.

Fortunately, nothing takes advantage of the momentary disruption to attack or threaten in any way. However, as bright as the sun shard is in the tunnel and even extending to light up the room beyond, there is a clot of shadow that no light penetrates. And, in the center of that, is a clot of...something that does not belong in the plane of reality. The cave has a...drawn, stretched look, as if gravity was pulling everything into that darkness.

Twenty minutes earlier I had tentatively made my way across the section these two climbers are seen traversing. I don't know that a rope would have been a great help and anyway I was on my own, but it is sufficient to say the exposure off both sides of this rock fin was enough to make me take great care in every movement. Having completed my climb I sat down on the summit and watched these two French climbers make quick progress across this ridge.

There are two traversers at Litchurch Lane, the older one here sees much less service nowadays. I gather it was made at Litchurch Lane, and at least in its original form had drive delivered by Class 47 traction motors, giving it ample power.

(A faulty TV at the Chili's in Roswell, NM displayed a strange streak across the screen. Interior lights reflected off the screen rendered the mysterious lights. The starfield completes the effect.)
The last many weeks have been filled with new house chores, coaching 3rd grade girls basketball and working like crazy, leaving little time for photography. In fact the last couple days were spent digging trenches in the front yard for a new lawn/sprinkling system. This afternoon I decided to take a short break from digging and search out a local waterfall. This is Traverse Creek Falls outside of Georgetown. With all the rain we've had in the last few days the creeks and rivers are at flood stage, which limited my composition opportunities.
