Translucent

It is not always that easy to guess what will happen when light bends.

series of translucent broken things on white

Finally....a backlit shot that seems to work. Softer than previous attempts, but still leans on my typical high contrast.

Light table (fluorescent), with halogen to left. Much good advice/inspiration/tutorials from the friendly folks at the "Make It A Megashot" group, (excellent group).

Having not attempted macro photography in a while, and the recent sunny weather, budding flowers and mini beasts everywhere motivated me to try again. Previously, I'd been dissapointed by a lack of magnification, though didn't think my Tokina 100mm lens was too blame.

After some research and experimentation, I realised that I could focus on subjects way closer than I'd assumed possible but not by using the focus ring. It's not accurate enough when the subject is moving, and neither is my focusing rail. However, I understood that rocking the camera forwards and backwards whilst taking more shots might provide the sharp focus I was after.

This image is the result of this technique taken from my first practice session in our garden. I spent some time shooting this African Impatiens trying focus on the petals and reproductive parts. In the end I chose this as my favoured image. Whilst both sharp and soft, I liked how the translucent colour enhances the photo's abstract nature.

Another incomprehensible iceberg in Lake Argentina in Los Glaciares National Park.

I've never seen such clear glacial ice -- especially illuminated with back light like this. On top of that I love the texture of this ice chipped like an ancient stone tool.

I love when the sunlight shines through these translucent boats, used by the Hozugawa Kudari boat ride down the river in Arashiyama.
