The 2014 Serpentine Pavilion by Smiljan Radić
A semi-translucent, cylindrical structure that resembled a shell and rested on large quarry stones, the 2014 Pavilion occupied 350 square metres of the Serpentine’s lawn...Designed as a flexible, multi-purpose social space, the Pavilion had a café sited inside.

The shell is made from fibreglass sheets 10mm thick, settled on 60 tonnes of rocks.
"I wanted to make it look like it came from the hands of a giant,..In the tradition of the English garden folly, it should be something that surprises the public and draws their attention, providing a spatial experience that you don't get every day."
Smiljan Radić
During the day, this rough-cast blob, which was made in Yorkshire, has the solidity of a pebble. But once inside, or when seen by night, it glows with a yellowish tinge, its fibrous surface giving it the look of shed skin. It is jagged and smeary, a texture offset by fine steel wires that hang a zigzagging lighting rail through the space, and an angular window, sharply sliced out to capture views of the lake beyond. It is a careful assembly of things that are both ragged and refined, contrasting roughly hewn with smoothly polished.

A short intermezzo from my "Denver to Seattle" uploads for a macro shot of an European Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus) from my own backyard.
In about a half hour I took 120 shots of different spiders. After severe selection, only 6 were kept. Not easy to get the focus on the tiny eyes!
These images are all about playing with translucency. The leaf has been placed on a piece of glass put between two tressles. A soft box is used to illuminate the leaf from below, with metering for the light, not the leaf.
I have had a lot of fun with these and will now try a few different scenarios.
One smooth opaque light cream bead,
one marbled, slightly translucent bead in a fantastically charming soft blue-green shade, and
one pale peach flower charm made from fresh water pearl,
all strung onto a very fine antiqued brass ball chain.
All pieces move freely on the ball chain, so I’ve made the flower charm 2-sided, so that it will always face the right side front no matter how it flips.
This weekend (April 16/17) the tulips were at their best in the Bollenstreek area. Bright colors everywhere!
A leaf is translucent when backlit by the sun in the Botanical building at Balboa Park.

We took Apple along with us on holiday to Menorca, and she had a great time! Lots of sunscreen though, for that translucent skin!
The translucent strip atop the KDE 4 Panel, that looks nice but is impossible to remove, wasting space and distracting my eye. Note the blurry fonts as well.
It's important to stay hydrated while walking the golf course (average walk for 18 holes is about 5 miles)...this Thermos Intak bottle is my favorite!
