From sea ship to river vessel

NS Mingo-Conway transfer 318 rolls east by the PRR-style mast signals in East Liverpool, Ohio, on May 23, 2021. This job has had SD60E's for the last several months, and it now seems to be going east out of Mingo late in the evening instead of mornings like it did earlier this year.

After making a transfer run to the nearby Rock Island RR's Burr Oak Yard at Blue Island, a GTW cab hop returns to home rails.

Electricity pilons in the evening light.

Usually I find those very disturbing in my landscape photography because there are so many of them around here. Sometimes I simply decide to make them the subject....

In this experiment, which some might call a spiritual exercise, the attempt is made at transferring bioenergy from an onion via an accumulator and, then, an accelerator, to a person. Evidence of transfer must not be 'anecdotal' but repeatable and statistically corroborated. This is the reason why I should be careful when talking about 'evidence'. There is a second caveat of a more ethical nature. In this experiment, the direction of energy transfer is from onion to man. This is purely for scientific reasons. The aim of the whole exercise, once formally established, is to transfer life energy from one person to another (transfer of merit, spiritually speaking). Exercises of this kind have been done before. The two ones I would like to mention specifically, are Joseph Beuys' action "Manresa" and Wilhelm Reich's "Orgone Accumulator".

SOO GP38-2 4412 leads the way of CP G-33, the Schiller Park Intermodal transfer as it passes by B-12 interlocking at Franklin Park, IL.

After shooting this Twin Cities and Western Railroad transfer departing CPKC's St. Paul yard as seen here: flic.kr/p/2oGDatk we tried to chase them, but they absolutely FLEW across town and we only barely made it in time to grab one more shot of them. They are crossing the Mississippi River at about MP 10.6 BNSF's ex Great Northern Wayzata Sub mainline in this view looking down off the North 1st Street overpass in downtown Minneapolis as they make their way toward Cedar Lake Junction ultimately headed back to Hopkins on home rails of their former Milwaukee Road mainline. The track diverging in the foreground leads to the Target Field Station platforms used by Northstar commuter trains.

The matching quartet of rebuilt GP38-2s (all rebuilt from former NS high hood straight GP38s of NW or SOU provenance) is marred only by unrepainted TCWR 3516 still in its leaser scheme. This is a unique rebuilt GP20C that was originally built as a GP20 in

Feb. 1961 as CBQ 901 and probably passed this way in a past life dressed in Cascade Green!

Continuing this week's 'Spitfire' theme - here is a profile view of a Spitfire Mk 1. A key feature is the barely perceptible, tapering, twist to the wing. The leading edge points upwards by 2 degrees where it joins the body, reducing to half a degree at the tip. This subtle twist greatly improved the handling for pilots, but made the structure far more difficult to manufacture. The wing was the design of Canadian-born aerodynamicist Beverley Shenstone, an unsung hero of the Spitfire story.

This aircraft carries the Eagle Squadron badge. Three RAF squadrons were formed with volunteer airmen from the USA in 1940 before American entry into WW2. About 240 men served, of whom around 100 perished. In Sept 1942, the US airmen transferred to the US 8th Army Air Force. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Squadrons

Iowa Interstate's mostly daily transfer to the CPKC at West Davenport pulls in the yard with a pair of SD38-2's and three cars for delivery. They'll end up pulling over 30 cars, putting the EMD's to work on the return trip.

WLE 6990 and WLE 6350 lead a train around the transfer at Bellevue as they head to tie their train down just outside of town.

Veterans B75 and 44206 are seen leading Waratah set A34 earlier in the day, heading through Thornleigh here as train 4178. This EMU is being transferred from Cardiff workshops to Auburn Maintenance Centre, and the diesel haulage is due to the lack of electrified roads at Cardiff and qualified crew to make the journey.

EMD B75 comes in at a whopping 71 years of service, with Alco 44206 not far behind with 53 years under it's belt.

Thanks to the recent rain and warm temperatures there was a bit more growth in the foreground here than I was hoping for.

Its July 1977 a Homewood to Glen Yard transfer is crossing the Rock Island at 16th Chicago IL

After CN transferred their countrywide passenger services into the new VIA system, they still remained in the passenger business. Like here in Montreal, where they operated an electrified commuter system since it was built in 1918 until 1982, when it too was transferred out of the CN system. It was a unique and pretty cool operation if you ask me, and for unknown reasons, I was wise enough to pay it a visit. One of the neatest stations on the line was Val Royal, where we see a MU train making it's station stop. I sure wish I could still go out and shoot some spotless, good looking, MU trains like this one these days.

A pair of SD40Ns scoot down Main Track 1 of the UP KC Metro Sub at St. Louis Ave. as they lead UP train YKS87-20 across town from 18th St. Yard in Kansas City, KS to the recently closed Neff Yard in Kansas City, MO.

Although the majority of classification of cars has been moved to 18th St. and Armourdale Yards on the Kansas side of town, the intermodale] ramp is still open and some locals still run in and out of Neff as does the MNA five days a week, thus requiring the YKS87 to continue transferring tonnage in and out of the "closed" Neff Yard. 10/20/19.

An ex-DTI unit now wearing CN paint (GTW 6226) leads CN 4141 as they enter the Port of Montreal with a transfer.

Returning home before sundown is "Run 12", CPKC train YKK12-13, moving east through the West Bottoms on Main Track 1 of the UP KC Metro Sub between Hickory St and St Louis. This is a transfer between UP's 18th St. Yard and CPKC's Knoche Yard, a matching pair of CP Golden Beaver GMD-built SD40-2's are leading the way. 12/13/25.

TRRA's SD60I pair is leading Train 201 west through the St. Louis City Suburbs toward BNSF's Lindenwood Yard with tonnage from the TRRA's Madison Yard.

There's only a couple of transfers in the St. Louis that are usually worth chasing. Probably the best one is the Terminal's Lindenwood Transfer that runs from TRRA's Madison Yard to BNSF's Lindenwood Yard. This job is on a 6 month rotation with BNSF. However, unfortunately TRRA handles the tonnage from the start of November to the end of April. That means during the majority of the time TRRA has this transfer, the train doesn't get out of Madison Yard till right as the sun is setting. That makes the late March, April and the start of November about the only times you can usually count on getting this transfer in usable daylight the entire way to Lindenwood.

Running as D193, PN's DL class locomotives 45, 44, 50 & 42 were hauled from Lithgow to Pt Kembla for rehabilitation works, captured as they pass through Wentworthville behind 8129.

When this was still the Soo Line's mainline from Minneapolis to Chicago, an eastbound Extra performs interchange work with the Minnesota Transfer, behind an SD40-2, SD40 (6604-750.) The double track between Shoreham Yard and Cardigan Junction crossed the Transfer (now the Minnesota Commercial) at one of Soo's many "quaint" stopsign crossings, right by the depot which can be seen in the upper right corner of the picture, behind the interchange tracks which curve away to the Transfer's yard. The units have crossed over to the westbound main here, leaving their train on the eastbound main two tracks over. There are more cars on the center siding, either what they set out or it could be their pickup to take east. A busy place indeed! The 6604 is only a year old and the 750 is ten years old, having been purchased in May of '80 and '71 respectively. I think both units have visited the Shoreham shop washer, right by the turntable, recently enough. Grody grungy locos weren't unknown on the Soo, especially in an Upper Midwest Winter season, but the image was generally maintained pretty well, especially considering the white paint.

CP's job from Superior yards a portion of its train while a lone UP GP38-2 runs around to pick up its interchange cars.
