Coincidence?

Don't worry...no photographers were harmed in the making of this composite image from 4 photographs merged together in Photoshop. Lighting for the photographer/model was achieved using one flash behind camera at half power and a second flash camera right at full power. Both flashes were triggered wirelessly with Pocket Wizards. Flying hat was lit the same way except with a few more attempts to get the best look for the "flip" (note the photographer is a St. Louis Cardinals fan). Original train picture was taken with natural lighting and placed in camera LCD, and second train picture was also taken with natural lighting and was used as the background.

This engine, along with a baggage-mail car and a terminal caboose represent Paducah's railroad heritage beginning with the first railroad line in 1855. Over the next 150 years that 60 mile reach into Tennessee spread north, west, south and east and now involves three major railroad systems.

Over the years, the Illinois Central Railroad has evolved into the Canadian National Railway, a regional railroad connecting Paducah to Louisville and a private company that rebuilds diesel locomotives, adding the latest technology for domestic use and export.

This Mikado was built in 1923 by Lima Locomotives Works for the I.C.R.R. and rebuilt in the Paducah shops in 1940 and 1951 before being donated to the city of Paducah in 1964.

Lancaster and Chester Railroad 3821 was built in 1978 as Conrail GP38-2 8235. In the Conrail takeover, it became Norfolk Southern 5368. NS sold it to Hems Leasing where it became HLCX 3821. Helms leased it to the L&C who then later bought the locomotive.

A hot summer day in August 1979 finds a Family Lines painted SD40-2, an L&N-painted SD40 and a couple of six-axle GEs hauling a unit coal train through Wolfcoal, Kentucky.

About an hour after pulling into MRL's Helena Yard, a BNSF unit grain train pulls away from the MRL station as a pouring rain falls from the sky.

I was on my way back to my hotel after supper when I saw the gates coming down at the crossing. I rolled down my window and picked up my camera, shooting from the comfort of my pickup truck's cab.

The units pulling this train are BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4038, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4607, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 781 (in Warbonnet paint) and MRL SD45-2 326 (ex-MRL SD45R 7555, xx-SP 7555, nee-SP SD45 8986).

One of CN SD40 5057's (to CFMG 6906, to ASDX 6906) trucks followed the correct rails but the rear truck slipped the switch and started down the adjoining track. Luckily the crew got it stopped in time without turning the unit over. Wrecker #40020, the "Etowah Wrecker" (as inidcated by the handpainted moniker on the rear of the cab) was moved into place to rerail the engine so it could be moved out of the way.

LC 3819 was built in 1978 by EMD as Conrail GP38-2 #8230. It then went to Norfolk Southern #5364. NS then sold it t Helms Leasing (HLCX) who renumbered it to #3819 before selling it to the L&C as the same number. A few years after this shot was made, L&C owner Gulf & Ohio Railways then sent the unit to the L&C's sister company Yadkin Valley Railroad as YVRR #3819.

Just behind the 3819 is the former Milwaukee Road “Wisconsin" car. It was built in 1948 as a business car for the Milwaukee Road and is now privately owned.

To celebrate Tennessee's 200th anniversary in 1996 the state leased two old Es from the privately owned Tennessee 200, Inc. and had them painted in a scheme based on the old Louisville & Nashville blue & cream scheme. They were lettered Spirit of Tennessee and while the units were numbered 9913 and 5794, on their numberboard they carried 1996 and 1796, which caused no small amount of confusion. 9913 is in the lead here in Etowah, TN. 9913 was built for the Burlington Route, became a BN unit, was later rebuilt by M-K and leased back to BN before being sold to Tennessee 200, Inc.
