Firefighter trainees are tested on key skills at a firefighter training site on Camp Casey Sept. 26. Most of the 19 trainees are assigned to Area I fire stations; one is from Camp Humphreys and two are from Chinhae Naval Base. They’re taking part in a six-week training course. Those who pass the course become certified as firefighters. The day’s training included morning and afternoon sessions with realistic scenarios that drilled them in key skills. The afternoon scenario , for example, tested their skills in pulling up to the fire scene in fire trucks, moving from the truck in six-member hose teams, entering a burning building from its ground floor, properly getting the hose through the twists and turns of the building and to the fire itself, then putting the fire out. It also tested their skill in donning firefighting equipment. Among those watching the training’s afternoon session was Col. Brandon D. Newton, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I.
