A CSX empty coal train moves through RB Cabin near Louisa, Kentucky along the former C&O Big Sandy Subdivision.
This is the train that took us up. Now it is going down. As you can see, on the way up the locomotive pushes, not pulls, the wagons.
By this time in late 2002, the Aberdeen Carolina and Western had parked most of its rag-tag fleet of aging first-generation geeps in favor of a solid stable of second-generation power. In this case, leased NS high-hood GP50 #7042 leads an eastbound freight at Robbins, NC - about 13 rail miles east of the company "shops" at Star - on 30 November 2002.
Behind the 7042 is TBRX (ex-CN) GP40-2LW #9538, TBRX (ex-GO Transit) GP40-2LW #703, and leased NS GP59 #4613.
Luckily, the ACWR is still privately owned and operated, and both of the GP40-2LWs pictured now wear the current ACWR green and cream.
Eastward train No.50 headed for Waterloo on the ex-Illinois Central Chicago to Omaha main. Ackley was once the diamond crossing with the Minneapolis & St Louis Ry main line between Mason City and Marshalltown. Today the east west line is operated by the CN. The M&StL is abandoned to the north, while the connection track here in the foreground connects to the Iowa River RR shortline that goes to a small ethanol plant about nine miles south of Ackley.
south bound CSX on the former Monon line cuts through the semaphores at the south end of Crawfordsville Ind
There were many people here. We caused quite the traffic jam. Many people asked what was happening. The answer we gave was, "train's coming". The cows were pretty cool too.

CSX K677 was crossing the Potomac River into West Virginia behind a trio of Canadian National EMDs at Harper's Ferry.
The empty ethanol train departed Baltimore in the morning and went via the Metropolitan Subdivision following CSX Q217 and Q135.
In a rare sight these days, three gray units smoke up the sky pulling hard across the I-10 bridge westbound through Houston. KCS 654, KCS 692, and an unidentified AC4400CW unit roll through town with two tarped locomotives bound for Mexico on the MSHMXJ train. Sadly, the SD40 units seen here are now gone off the roster.
The NS Geometry Train tested from East Deerfield to Ayer, MA and return on the now former Pan Am Freight Main. Here we see ACSES equipped MEC 5946 leading the way over the Miller's River in Erving, MA. Photo taken 9/1/2022.

The Gilman Paper Company was sold to the Durango Paper Company in 1999, and the plant closed its doors in 2002 after two industrial accidents led to stiff OSHA fines. Luckily, the St. Marys soldiers on as a tourist attraction, offering themed train rides.
Note the former Family Lines baywindow caboose parked at left.
This train just crossed the wide Hollandsdiep. In the back you see both the normal trainbridge and on the right the Highspeed train bridge.

My friend and I thought it would be a good idea to climb on top of this old unused train in La Mesa in order to get a different perspective than that of the typical trolley LE shots. It was a lot higher up than it looks!

One of the perks of attending the Lexington Group meeting in Kansas City in October 2013 was a ride on the KCS business train from Kansas City Union Station to a wye at Amsterdam, Missouri, a distance of 62 miles. We left KC at about 09:30 and arrived back at about 13:00. It was a fun trip. KCS president Mike Haverty was along, and the company provided all sorts of food and drinks for the guests.
This image was made at 13:05, just a few minutes after we arrived back in Kansas City. This was a beautiful train, inside and out. You can't beat that KCS paint scheme.
A welded rail train running as W014-19 heads north through Romulus behind a Slug and Mother combo. The train was headed for Grand Rapids to lay new rail on the GR Terminal Sub.
