All 173 species of Banksia bar one, are uniquely Australian. The genus is a member of the Proteaceae family and was first collected at Sydney in 1770 by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. Fossils found have shown that these incredible plants have been on earth for 59 million years.
Inflorescences on B. ericifolia can grow to 30cm in length. This species is endemic to this area here on the east coast.
This may look like a delicate beauty - but it is in fact rather like touching a wire brush. These plants, (even their inflorescences), are tough as old boots.
Flowering in autumn and winter. Like other banksias, B. ericifolia plays host to a wide variety of pollinators and is a vital source of nectar in autumn, when other flowers become scarce.
Can grow to 6 m.

I take travel so much for granted, the ability to fly around the world and take pictures. Whilst we all lock ourselves away, I have decided to post some shots, that for whatever reason I was on the fence about and didn't post, or did and removed, from various countries from around the world. A close fly-by from a short-eared owl in the Cambridgeshire Fens.
Each of these owls has their own 'personality' - some are wary, others are more trusting of humans and will fly that bit closer.
Santorini, Greece
So, I booked Paris for autumn and can't wait to visit for the 2nd time! And did I ever mention September was my favorite travel month? Well, there has to be at least one Mediterranean destination on my schedule in September. Last year it was Santorini and this year I'm having difficulties deciding on whether to go to the Amalfi Coast, Sardinia, Corsica, Mykonos or Normandy? Or a city trip to Rome, I think I will have to decide this weekend, suggestions are welcome!
