Maggie Hambling's scallop, Aldeburgh
On Aldeburgh's beach, a short distance north of the town centre, stands a sculpture, The Scallop, dedicated to Benjamin Britten, who used to walk along the beach in the afternoons. Created from stainless steel by Suffolk-based artist Maggi Hambling, it stands 15 feet (4.6 m) high, and was unveiled in November 2003.[19] The piece is made up of two interlocking scallop shells, each broken, the upright shell being pierced with the words: "I hear those voices that will not be drowned", which are taken from Britten's opera Peter Grimes. The sculpture is meant to be enjoyed both visually and tactilely, and people are encouraged to sit on it and watch the sea. Approached along the road from the Thorpeness direction it has a totally different silhouette appearing to be a knight on a rearing charger.
The sculpture is controversial in the local area,[20] with some local residents considering it spoiling the beach.[19] It has been vandalised with graffiti and paint on 13 occasions.[19] There have been petitions for its removal and for its retention.[19]
Yesterday I spent some time with my dad and learned a very interesting (to me anyway!) fact about myself that I'd never known about before.
Turns out I was the last Reid in a line dating back to the 1700's that was born in Jefferson County, Ky. When my mom was pregnant with brother #1 we were living in Sandusky, Ohio. My grandfather told my father that he would drive from Louisville to Sandusky, rest for a day and then drive my mother back to Louisville to have my brother so that the line wouldn't be broken. My grandfather was adamant that this should happen but my parents wouldn't have it. So my brother was born in Ohio, my grandfathers heart was broken and I was the last Jefferson County Reid in succession. Brother #2 was born in Evansville, Indiana and then finally, brother #3 was born in Louisville like me but by then it was too late.

Took a few tries to get the shot I wanted, it's a lot harder when you're shooting yourself, but I think I finally got the detail and mood I was after. I have seen a few impressive eye shots here on Flickr so here's another!
Not totally sharp. But this was a weird afternoon. I have been so busy with DIY on boat and house that I have done very little photography. But my neighbour phoned me. She had disturbed a bird of prey in the lane. So I grabbed my camera and found a dead pigeon. There is nowhere to hide in the lane and I assumed that it had been a sparrowhawk so I went for a mooch down the lane. And a sparrowhawk did appear. But then it flew off and this guy arrived. After this he flew off down in front of my house. I spent 40 minutes covered in camouflage. He briefly landed but took off. Eventually I decided to head into my kitchen and set up there. But Sod’s law - this guy had been sitting in the tree waiting . The wildlife always has the last laugh. 😂
Vandaag was het tijd om weer eens een uitstapje te plannen. Sinds 21 mei was het, wegens examens en werk, eventjes stil. Natuurlijk besteed ik tegenwoordig ook veel tijd aan andere leuke dingen, waardoor spoorwegfotografie de laatste tijd een beetje achteraan op het lijstje komt. Vergeleken met vroeger doe ik het veel minder; ik doe het nu ongeveer evenveel als een gemiddelde fotograaf. Vandaag, woensdag 11 juni, stond vrij in de kalender. Ik wilde eerst naar Duitsland voor een leuke bediening aldaar, maar toen een vriend van mij vroeg om ’s avonds een aantal 27'ers te fotograferen, besloot ik het in België te houden – iets wat ook tof is!
De planning had in totaal vijf doelen:
• Het fotograferen van een trein op L113
• Het fotograferen van de Cockerill in Bascoup
• Het fotograferen van IC2435 en 2436
• Het fotograferen van een goederentrein op L242
Zoals jullie wel weten, is mijn interesse gewekt wanneer het mogelijk is om een fabriekslocje te zien. Ook ben ik altijd enthousiast als het mogelijk is om op een landelijke diesellijn een goederentrein te fotograferen. Die twee waren mogelijk in Bascoup.
Bascoup is een werkplaats van Infrabel in Wallonië, waar de meeste wissels en sporen per trein worden geëxporteerd naar de werven. Jammer genoeg is het verkeer erg infrequent en onbetrouwbaar om op lijn 113, de spoorlijn naar Bascoup, een foto te maken. De lijn kent aan het begin een aantal bovenleidingsportalen – de lijn stond op de planning om geëlektrificeerd te worden. Gelukkig is dat niet verder doorgegaan en heeft de lijn nu nogsteeds een toffe sfeer.
De meeste treinen die hier vertrekken, worden door Infrabel met een reeks 77 gereden. In Bascoup zelf is een 91 en ook een MOL actief voor de rangeringen aldaar. Om dat te zien, moet je echter geduld en geluk hebben.
Vandaag stond er een rit om 9:40 uit Schaarbeek gepland en om 11:00 terug naar Schaarbeek. De heenrit was fout voor de zon, maar de terugrit was in goed licht. Ik besloot mij dan ook op de terugrit te focussen. Toen ik om 10:10 op de plek aankwam, was het al duidelijk dat dit wel eens een mooie plaat kon gaan worden. Na ongeveer 40 minuten wachten kwam de 7788 van Infrabel aan. Ik kreeg al wat schrik toen ik de loc in de verte zag, want het leek erop dat hij los reed. Na enkele minuten kwam de trein dichterbij en bleek hij toch vier wagens bij te hebben.
Hierna ging ik door naar een brug over de werkplaats zelf. Hier wachtte ik op de Cockerill. Bij aankomst zag ik de MOL nog even rangeren, en toen gingen de werknemers pauze nemen. Na meer dan 2,5 uur wachten wilde ik vertrekken, want het werd inmiddels tijd om naar mijn volgende doel te gaan. De trein die ik moest nemen vertrok echter pas binnen 1 uur en 10 minuten en het was maar 40 minuten lopen. Ik besloot dan toch nog even te wachten, en opeens ging het personeel dan toch de Cockerill op. Op het allerlaatste moment kon ik dan toch genieten van de 9140 in actie in Bascoup! Hij haalde eerst een wagen op, zette deze tegen een andere set wagens en reed dan verder met drie wagens. Dat ritje was ideaal voor de foto!
Hierna ging ik alweer door. De locomotieven van reeks 21/27 zijn bijna buiten dienst en eerlijk gezegd is mijn interesse wel echt weg. Het zijn mooie machines, maar omdat mijn interesse voor elektrische treinen niet echt groot meer is en de locs er qua graffiti vreselijk uitzien, heb ik er het afgelopen half jaar nauwelijks tot geen foto's van gemaakt. Ook een ritje met M4 is al sinds februari geleden! Vandaag was het doel om de 2738 in Ligne op te wachten en de 2715 in Havinnes. Havinnes is trouwens de bekende plek met de fraaie bediening, maar deze reed vandaag gepland niet.
De persoon met wie ik op stap was, Dieter, had ‘koning auto’ meegenomen, en het was dus gelukkig mogelijk om naar twee enorm slecht bereikbare plekken te gaan. Hierna in de planning stond nog een foto op het lijntje naar Baudour, maar dat was spannend. Als die trein op tijd zou rijden, maakten we niet echt veel kans om een foto daarvan te maken. Een vertraging van ongeveer een half uur zou het mogelijk maken deze trein te zien.
Om 14:17 nam ik in Morlanwelz de trein en na een overstap in La Louvière was het eventjes reizen naar Doornik. Vanuit Doornik nam ik de trein naar Leuze.
Vanuit daar reden we naar Ligne, waar een plek is waar je met een ladder een mooie foto kunt maken. Doel: 2738. Na even wachten kwam trein E2435 dan ook langs met een dikke vertraging van 30 minuten. Hierna gingen we door naar Havinnes voor een foto van de 2715. Nadat dit gelukt was, gingen we door. Voor de trein die naar L242 ging, was een vertraging nodig; anders zouden we het niet halen. Omdat de trein al een beetje te laat Y. Soignies naderde, werd hij achter de stoptrein naar Bergen gestuurd en was het dus zeker dat er met vertraging gereden ging worden op L242.
Na toch wel een tijdje wachten was het 19:06. De stoptrein naar Mons was 10 minuten geleden vertrokken en de IC naar Namen vertrok nu in Saint-Ghislain, daar waar het koppel 77’ers een half uur geleden klaar was met het kopmaken. Hierna was het tot 19:30 reizigerstreinloos, dus vermoedde ik dat rond 19:10 à 19:15 de trein zou vertrekken. En jawel, al om 19:08 bewoog de trein stilletjes aan naar Criquelion-Formation. Aldaar wordt kopgemaakt en rond 19:30 werd, al duwend, L242 opgereden.
Het is inmiddels 19:41 als Dieter en ik opnieuw op de ladders stonden en in prachtig licht de 7807 met de 7830 fotografeerden, die hun trein naar Baudour duwden. Hierna werd de trein ingehaald en kon in nog fraaier licht de trein nogmaals gefotografeerd worden. Hierna keerden we tevreden terug naar huis!

I know there are a lot of better eclipse shots out there, but I can't believe I handheld this at 1/60 and 270mm - the VR (vibration reduction), must have really worked.
Taken in Traveler's Rest, South Carolina from the BI-LO parking lot off 25. Thanks to my neighbor, Reid for calling last minute to see if I wanted to head down to the totality zone. No traffic at all. Really worthwhile, amazing, unbelievable, hard to put into words. So Thankful that I got to experience it

We are back from The Tetons and Yellowstone! I know I'm a little late to the eclipse photo sharing party, but here's my composite from our view almost directly under the center line up high on a butte in Grand Teton National Park. August 21st was my birthday, and as a lifelong astronomy nerd, I had been planning this trip for years!
It's not an exaggeration to say that watching the eclipse was a life-changing experience. We hiked up a 1500-foot butte in the middle of Grand Teton National Park, just east of the Teton massif. As the sky darkened and the colors faded and the temperature dropped nearly 20 degrees I started to feel like I was having an out-of-body experience. Just before totality my fiancé and I held hands and saw the light flutter on the ground, like the space-time continuum itself was rippling. (We later learned that this light flutter is called "shadow bands", and that they are rarely seen - we were very lucky!). As totality arrived, we could hear the chorus of exclamations from thousands of people rising up from the Jackson Hole valley below, which made it feel even more like a religious rite. During totality, a little nocturnal vole rushed out of its hole, ran by my feet and under my camera tripod. It was two minutes and thirty seconds of absolute wonder, and I'll never get over it.

Liqueur coffee is a delicious possibility to warm a cold body after walking through a winterly icecold landscape....
After coming home try this recipe:
Ingredients (serves 6):
* 6 cups hot freshly brewed coffee
* 120ml Eierlikör (liqueur made of eggs - eggnog)
* 300ml thickened cream, whipped
* 1 tablespoon drinking chocolate
Method:
Fill 6 coffee glasses with boiling water. Stand for 30 seconds, or until glasses are
warm. Discard water.
Pour coffee into warm glasses. Pour 1 tablespoon of liqueur into each glass and stir
to combine. Top with cream and dust with drinking chocolate.
If you don´t have Eierlikör take Whiskey or Cognac or a hazelnut-flavoured liqueur.
After this yummy drink your feet will be warm and I´m sure you will be happy...
The shot above was before sunrise. I posted another photograph below from the same spot but when the sun was exactly shining on the mountain and I used a 10-stop filter. Big difference in my opinion. If you have time read the description of my post in the comments. Had to wake up at 3:45am for this and then drive 100km to be onsite before the other photographers and people arrive. The place is totally magical.

These guys were not playing, the dust they were kicking up , the heat haze off the path, plus a large crop, messed with things here, as did having to quickly drop to one knee and hand hold., these excuses aside, worth sharing I thought.
