The Olympic Torch stopped in Toronto. Celebrations occurred.
As a pure technical aside, I think about how getting this image would have been impossible as little as fifteen years ago. This was shot at ISO 1600, f5.6, 1/125, 300mm on a 1.3x crop, so effective 400mm (almost), handheld with IS, processed with NR software. The technical results of sharpness, lack of grain/noise shows how far digital has surpassed film. I still love film, but technically, this shot could never have existed on film.
The resorts all seem to have torch lighting rituals where a guy blows a conch shell and then runs around lighting tiki torches. (If you walk by one of the torches around this time but before they are lit, you can smell the natural gas.) The first place we saw this was the Fairmont in Maui (when we were there for dinner). It was neat but kind of odd because no one was around except for the guy running through lighting the torches and us.
We decided to walk along the beach to the Fairmont to check it out. When we got to the Fairmont, we were a little bit jealous of the grounds--it seemed a notch up from the Mauna Lani Bay a little bit, and the grounds seemed a little bit more cozy. But with that came the knowledge that we could not have afforded a room with the same view that we got if we stayed at the Fairmont.
We also saw a wedding going on, or at least the photo taking portion of it. We saw a bride in her dress being chased by her bridesmaids on the beach as a photographer followed along taking pictures. Most surprising was when she stepped into the ocean with her dress and husband. I guess she was making it a one-time-use dress.

If you have the time, View On Black
I realize this shot doesn't have a lot going on, but what attracted me and ultimately resulted in this photo were the wonderful colors. They are subtle, but, in my opinion, beautiful and representative of the magnificent Torch Lake. By the way, I think this shot needs to be seen in the larger version so that the stones and the movement of the lake can be seen.
