Geology: The Toadstools represent two geologic layers separated by millions of years. The top layer (Dakota Formation) was formed around 97 million years ago. The bottom layer (Entrada Formation) was deposited approximatey 160 million years ago. The layer inbetween, the Morrison Formation, completely eroded away before the Dakota layer was deposited. This break in the sedimentary geologic record is called an unconformity.
We followed a dry stream bed most of the way as we hiked back to these. Along the way, we saw tracks of what looked like may have been a cougar/mountain lion. They were definitely bigger than a dog's prints. I couldn't help but think of Chaybert (Brian) as we were walking along....it almost felt like we were being watched. :-) Having a great meal for a mountain lion with us (Zoe), I kept looking around and behind me on the trail since I lagged behind several times when stopping to shoot pictures.
This is winging its way in the the post to my swap partner Jill, in north, north, north Scotland as I speak.

This very recognizable mushroom, Amanita muscaria is commonly known as the Fly Agaric. It is a bright toadstool that is both poisonous and psychoactive.
It is native throughout North America and is generally found amongst both deciduous and coniferous tree though these specimens were growing amongst some mossy tall grasses along the banks of the Little Qualicum River.
These handsome 'shrooms' are the quintessential toadstool with the bright red colouring and the striking, jagged white spots and large white gills. There are other varieties of this mushroom in other colours such as brown, yellow and pink.

I was invited to a large property in Macclesfield to take a look at the wonderful variety of trees there, in various autumn colors. These little suckers were camped under some trees out in the paddocks.
Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric is a poisonous and psychoactive basidiomycete fungus, one of many in the genus Amanita. Native throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Amanita muscaria has been unintentionally introduced to many countries in the southern hemisphere, generally as a symbiont with pine plantations, and is now a true cosmopolitan species. It associates with various deciduous and coniferous trees. The quintessential toadstool, it is a large white-gilled, white-spotted, usually deep red mushroom, one of the most recognizable and widely encountered in popular culture.
