Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction and a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard in the city's Titanic Quarter where the RMS Titanic was built. It tells the stories of the ill-fated Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage in 1912, and her sister ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic. The building contains more than 12,000 square metres (130,000 sq ft) of floor space, most of which is occupied by a series of galleries, plus private function rooms and community facilities.
Design and construction
Rowan Gillespie's sculpture Titanica in front of Titanic Belfast
Eric Kuhne and Associates were commissioned as concept architects, with Todd Architects appointed as lead consultants. The building's design is intended to reflect Belfast's history of shipmaking and the industrial legacy bequeathed by Harland & Wolff. Its angular form recalls the shape of ships' prows, with its main "prow" angled down the middle of the Titanic and Olympic slipways towards the River Lagan. (Alternatively, it has been suggested that the building looks like an iceberg, and locals have already nicknamed it "The Iceberg".) Most of the building's façade is clad in 3,000 individual silver anodised aluminium shards. It stands 126 feet (38 m) high, the same height as Titanic 's hull.
The interior of the eight-storey building provides 12,000 square metres (130,000 sq ft) of space. Its centrepiece is a series of interpretive galleries exploring aspects of the building, design, sinking and legacy of Titanic. On the top floor of the museum is Belfast's largest conference and reception space, the Titanic Suite, a banqueting facility capable of seating 750 people. A reproduction of the original staircase on the Titanic ship, made famous by the James Cameron film 'Titanic' in 1997, is located in this conference centre. The building also provides education, community, retail and restaurant facilities plus a community resource centre.
The construction of the building cost £77 million with an additional £24 million spent on pre-planning and public realm enhancements. The foundations to the building involved one of the country's largest-ever concrete pours with 4,200 cubic metres (150,000 cu ft) of concrete delivered by 700 concrete lorries in 24 hours. Harcourt Construction (NI) Ltd oversaw the design and building phase of the project, a subsidiary of Dublin-based property development company Harcourt Developments Ltd.
In front of the building is Titanica, a sculpture by Rowan Gillespie depicting a diving female figure. Made of bronze, it is mounted on a brass base, evoking the design of figureheads on ships' prows, and is meant to represent hope and positivity. The figure was dedicated by representatives of the Anglican, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian churches on 27 March 2012, a few days before the opening of Titanic Belfast.
►my tribute to the Titanic, full of uncertainties because who knows if, with this captain and crew, we also will sink. One tip: keep on hand a lifesaver, there is only lifeboats for first class..

The initial outing of the olympic class liner "RMS Death Star" was cut short two hours and forty minutes after starting her voyage when water entered through a small thermal exhaust port causing the ship to sink.
Of the 1,179,293 passengers (including 30,984 Stormtroopers) on the ship, over half lost their lives due to a lack of escape pods.

The Memorial to the Engine Room Heroes of the Titanic at the Pier Head in Liverpool, taken at Sunset. The 244 Engineers in the engine room went down with the ship in 1912 to keep the power running as long as possible. This was built in 1916, and bears the scars of WW2 bombings .

Shot up on deck 15 during our first sail away. Something about that wind blowing on your face just melts the real world away.
This is Rose in the dress she was wearing just before she met Jack and while she was standing on the deck of the ship thinking of jumping!!

After taking pictures of the interior of the Titanic in 1912 I decided to use a 3D model of the wreck to take some with a submarine in Second Life.
(Sorry for that sort of green reflection but it was a pain to edit this dark picture! :v )

On October, 31st 2008 I made a decision to dedicate a painting to every person and animal that perished in the sinking of RMS Titanic April, 15th 1912. This resulted in a great deal of research and becoming acquainted with many interesting people, who have supported my endeavours. I then realised that people had died during the building of this magnificent ship and decided to add them to my list. In total I painted 1,600 paintings.
April 15 2012 - will commemorate the
100th Anniversary of Titanic's sinking.

Paintings and Music by Sophie Shapiro
"Sophie Shapiro's Video
RMS Titanic Centenary April 15th 1912–2012 is a deeply moving artistic tribute commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking. In this short film, Shapiro presents a selection of her 1,600 paintings, each dedicated to an individual or animal who perished in the disaster, including those who died during the ship's construction. Accompanied by her original musical composition, which serves as a poignant accompaniment to the visual tribute. The music's sombre and reflective tones enhance the emotional depth of the piece, underscoring the themes of loss and remembrance. This auditory element complements the visual narrative, creating a cohesive and immersive experience that honours the memory of those who perished in the Titanic disaster.
Shapiro's meticulous research and heartfelt artistry culminate in a visual elegy that honours each life lost. The inclusion of a quote from the Song of Solomon - “Many waters cannot quench love; neither can floods drown it”- underscores the enduring nature of love and memory.
This work exemplifies Shapiro's commitment to exploring themes of spirituality and human connection through art. Her dedication to memorialising the Titanic's victims serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of collective remembrance."

I was over in Belfast for the weekend with my family to visit the fantastic Titanic Museum. Due to the constraints of hand luggage on EasyJet I decided to carry only my back up camera (the smaller Olympus EP-1) and a small gorillapod style tripod so this shot was very hit and miss! All the POVs were floor level due to the small tripod and I found bending down to peer at the screen made framing difficult. Still I found the low POV provided some interesting compositions and reflections that I would have missed with my normal Manfrotto tripod. This was taken outside the Titanic Museum at night. A group of Dutch people were attending a function within the museum and were standing at the door for a smoke. Dutch people always sound to me like they are in a good mood and having a good time!

This is one of the few surving deckchairs from the Titanic, recovered from the ocean after the ship sank. This deckchair would have been reserved by a passenger for the crossing together with cushions and a wool blanket to protect against the Atlantic chill. Once reserved, a steward would place a card with the passenger's name in the metal holder on the chair's back.

Fragment of an oak overdoor panel found floating on the surface of the Atlantic. This panel marks the point where the Titanic broke in half as it sank on the night of 14 April 1912. It is a remarkable survival and the largest remaining fragment from the ship. Situated over the door to the first-class lounge, the panel's motif of musical instruments carved in the Rococo style demonstrates the high-quality decoration on board. This is the first time the panel has been seen in Europe since the Titanic set sail.
