i originally wanted tiny old school white hexagonal tiles for the floor but left the store with big ass tiles (12" x 24"). i think it looks rather pimp myself.
I think if I left the area for 20 years and then came back, the road names made of tiles would be one of the things that brought memories flooding back - they're so typical of the older parts of town. The pointing hand in this one gives it an extra touch of old-fashioned quirkiness.
The Museum of Islamic Art opposite the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
The Tiled Kiosk was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II in 1472. It is one of the oldest structures in Istanbul featuring Ottoman civil architecture, and was a part of the Topkapı Palace outer gardens.
This 3"x3" mosaic smalti tile is made with love in memory of Marcia, my dear friend Dana's mom. She left us too soon, but lives on in the hearts and memories of so many!
The way Dana loves her mother always brings a tear to my eye, and makes me appreciate my mum all the more. This tile will be one of four installed in Marcia's headstone - each chosen by one of her four children.
Marcia loved blues and the colors of the ocean. She was a cancer and loved the stars - the cancer constellation also has four primary stars, which in this piece represent her four kids. Each star here is a piece of polished opalescent quartz. The golden ring, made of 24k gold smalti, represents Marcia and the halo she's wearing now. It can also represent the moon in this scene. Marcia loved Hawaii, so she and her children watch from sky over the green mountains of the islands in this tile.

Tile fountain in the lobby of the historic Virginia Hotel, now a Holiday Inn. The hotel was built in 1916 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Right after 9-11 all kinds of memorials sprang up in NYC (and all over the world, too) and in Greewich Village on the corner of Greewich Ave and 7th Ave people began to use a fence as a backdrop to hang tiles that they'd made at a local craft shop to commemorate the people who had died in the World Trade Center.
There were inpromtu bulletin boards all over the city where pictures and names of missing loved ones and friends could be posted and sometimes there were only descriptions like a tattoo of a heart on her neck or she wore diamond studs to work that day. Those sad postings have long been worn away by the weather and time, but on this street corner these tiles still remain as vibrant as the day that they were hung. The plants that were arranged on a small plot of dirt in front of this fence have grown quite nicely but what strikes me about the area now is that the billboards though they change from time to time seem to look so totally out of place.
I LOVE THIS TILE! It was a special purchase find from Home Depot...with our military discount it was only about $6.29 a square foot! I'm going to cut it down to use as a backsplash for the two sinks and also around the tub. I will probably top it with a stone topper piece...it's so earthy, a porcelain just doesn't look right...my sister pointed that out...
Tommy laying floor tiles. The edge between the tile and hardwood is a strip of metal, and the tiles have to be laid carefully so that they are even all the way across. By the walls and cabinets there is a strip of shoe moulding (quarter round) that covers variations in cutting.
Under the tile is Durock (copyrighted trade name, I'm sure) that provides support and structure so the joints between the tiles don't flex and crack. (Plywood is a bit too flexible to have tiles laid directly on it.)

One contains all the second series of tiles (DU1 through 6 at present) with an extra copy of DU4 Arcane Towers and DU6 Harrowing Halls (8 sets in total).
