Diplodocus sp. - adult left tibia (back leg bone) from a sauropod dinosaur in the Jurassic of Utah, USA. (DNM 3810, Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, USA)

Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest terrestrial animals ever. They all have the same basic body plan: large body with four walking legs, very long neck & tail, and a small head relative to body size. Sauropods were herbivores, and are often perceived as holding their heads & necks up high to reach vegetation normally out of reach to other organisms. Modern reconstructions of many sauropod species depict them with heads and necks held close to the horizontal, or at low angles above the horizontal.

these are the results of falling off of a trail, i broke the tibia and the fibula. it was very painful.

The current arrangement of the bones in the patterns that visitors see is owed to director of the Paris Mine Inspection Service Héricart de Thury when the site was opened to the public in 1809.

I've included this photo even though most of it is out of focus because it is the clearest view of the single tooth on the middle leg tibia, a distinguishing mark for this species. A female Stag Beetle (Lucanus), though normally browner than the Lesser Stag Beetle is sometimes also black. However, she has two teeth on her middle tibia. Thanks, as often, to Michael Chinery, who managed to pack so much good information into his Insects of Britain and Western Europe.

The Catacombs of Paris are an underground ossuary located south of the former city gate near Place Denfert-Rochereau. It holds the remains of about 6 million people and fills a renovated section of caverns and tunnels that are the remains of Paris's stone mines. Opened in the late 18th century, the underground cemetery became a tourist attraction on a small scale from the early 19th century, and has been open to the public on a regular basis from 1874. Some of the arrangements are almost artistic in nature, such as a heart-shaped outline in one wall formed with skulls embedded in surrounding tibias; another is a round room whose central pillar is also a carefully created 'keg' bone arrangement. Based on hind tibia, this is not Dephacidae, Fulgoridae, Achilidae, Meenoplidae, Derbidae, Dictyopharidae, Cixiidae, Kinnariidae, Ricaniidae, Lophopidae, Eurybrachidae. It is possible this is Tropiduchidae, Flatidae, Nogodinidae, Issidae. Likely, Flatidae.
