The dramatic angle between the tibia (leg bone) and calcaneus (heel bone) in an individual with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is seen here as well as the midfoot collapse and flatfoot.
I found this handsome Grasshopper (Acrididae, Orthoptera) on the chipseal road in our canyon today. I believe it's genus Trimerotropis in the Oedipodinae group of Band-winged Grasshopper. I thought it might be a Thalassica Grasshopper (Trimerotropis thalassica), but Allice tells me that it's a Fontana Grasshopper (Trimerotropis fontana) - see her comments below. Well, they are similar. This one has blue hind tibia and pale wings when it takes flight. Compare this photo of (maybe) the same thing, and see how different in color they can be. It was downright cool today, only in the 70s. It was also quite breezy from both the north and south. The day started with a bit of marine layer fog spilling over the mountains into our canyon, accompanied by "fog winds". The fog quickly dissipated, but the wind stuck around. My grandkids are flying down from Portland, Oregon tonight to stay with us for a week or more. That's cool - but it may change my photos for the rest of the week!

This is why I haven't been on here in awhile. Last weekend my friend hit me with his dirt bike at 40mph. Luckily I wasn't hurt anywhere other than my left leg. Both bones below the knee were broke in multiple places. One of which was an open fracture (the tibia bone broke through the skin). My knee was shattered into multiple pieces. I went into surgery right away. They put in rods, screws and mesh wires. I spent 5 days in the hospital. Let me tell you... VERY painful! However, I feel very blessed to be alive :-)

His scooter bit him good.
He was riding his scooter with his friends and took a spill. That's nothing new for him, he's 5 yrs old. I have to pick him up from a crash at least once a week. hehe Well, this time he wasn't gonna get up on his own. When he fell this time the foot plate hit him in the shin. Daddy had to go and get him and bring him in the house. From there Travis checked out his leg and I decided that he should take him to the ER, so off they went. Three hours later they came home with the news of a complete break and a splint. The next day I was the lucky one that got to take him to get his splint removed and cast put on. What a ride. I'm glad I'm off that one for now. Each day is something new. Let's see how the next 5 weeks go.

The MR findings showing the typical features of this relatively rare bone tumor. It is essentially an intracortical tumor extending both to the medulla and to the soft tissues. The behavior can be unpredictable. Both the radiological and the histological diagnosis may be difficult and misleading mostly due to the rarity of this particular neoplasm. Tibia is by far the commonest location. This particular case had originally been diagnosed as a synovial sarcoma invading bone. A careful radiological examination might have shown conclusively that this was not a tumor of soft tissue. A pathologist, unaware of the radiological findings and confronted with a misleading clinical diagnosis of "soft tissue sarcoma" may well diagnose this tumor as a synovial sarcoma, another "biphasic tumor".

It has been a month now since I destroyed the top of my left tibia. School has gotten out and the boys are on summer vacation. This is the first time I've felt up to taking any photos since it all happened. Fortunately for me, the boys have been very good, extra helpful for the most part through the whole ordeal. I still can't put any weight on my leg and so am hopping about with a walker and using a wheelchair. The boys are quite patient with all the things I can't do and ask them to do for me.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.
They put in a plate, secured by 6 screws. A 7th screw fastens the broken piece of fibula to the main part of the bone. One of the 6 screws in the plate (the looooooooong one) fastens the fibula to the tibia.This was done because the ligaments that normally hold these two bones together were torn. This screw will stabilize things until the ligament can (hopefully) regenerate. That screw will be removed in 12 weeks.
